ok now im lost , my pc is bugging , none of my freespace stuff will run FS, tbp etc , when i click the launcher nothing comes up on the screen , not even the firewall asks me if i want to unblock it , seems like ive lost something important to fs any ideas ,
i dont even know what to post im so shocked ..........
its running xp and that seems to be having a few problems , everything else games wise seems to be working and program wise ......
please help , :shaking: :(
-
Reinstall FS?
-
download a new build and select it as the new exe on the launcher.
-
tried 15 different builds and its not just fs, my tbp, btrl, wingcommander, earth minibar all wont run , all different launchers all different folders it looks like im missing something fundamental that the fs engine needs to run , could it be an open gl issue , if so where can i download one ?
-
mmmm OpenAL maybe??
-
ive reinstalled that already and theres no beer in the house
-
Coulda fooled me
-
mm you got me then, anything else happened before this? have you changed you video card driver or something?
-
nothing , had to reinstall my modem software , but my xp seems to have taken a hit in the head ...... mmmmm i wonder if micro**** has snuck an update past me brb
-
nope no changes in updates i guess i need to go through my xp and see whats missing, looks like there is no fs multi for me tonight
-
sorry man, I dont seem to come up with anything else right now.
I would reboot my pc on those cases XD
-

Did you check your network config in the launcher? Maybe it's looking for the old modem driver.
-
yip ive done all that its not loading any part of fs no start video etc and all my online gamesseem to work except for the fs variants ive tried rebooting, reinstalled openal, opengl , nvidia drivers stopped my overclock , reinstalled direct x, run antivirus , etc gunna run a combo fix probably just to see, really dont want to reinstall everything, just got the feeling its my xp install thats wrong a few things have changed on it and i havent changed it .......
ok im off to check withh combo fix
-
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task Manager. Click the 'Processes' tab. Then start the FreeSpace launcher and start it up. Watch the processes tab...it should have FreeSpace show up somewhere.
Also...most builds come with a debug build. Use the debug variant of the EXE instead. Lets see whats happening.
Also, do you run any security software?
-
mm this is abuild thats been in place for over 1year , it shows up in the task manager but does not run , i run avg and the windows firewall i have tried with both disconnected still no joy ...... i really have no idea whats going on as this is across the board of fs as i mentioned earlier, im going to give up for the night and ill try a reinstall tomorrow if neccesary but i think its my xp install thats died in all honesty ...... thanks every one for the help
-
Can somebody move this to Help & Support? :nervous:
-
ok i completely reinstalleed fs and still no go , no fs based application works on my computer , i can load up the launcher but once i choose and try to start it freezes my system, same for all variats btrl, babylon, etc
so the sole thing i can think it has to be my xp install, so if anyone can guess what i could be missing in my xp install that would stop fs from working but allows need for speed , tony hawks, halo, resident evil ,brian lara cricket to work and all of my other apss including ftp and chat stuff please tell me , have i lost a .dll
i really dont want to reinstall xp as my dvd drive is a little ****ty , andalso the fact that id have to install 200gb of apps after that ....
please , i dont think i can survive without playing fs multiplayer...
-
If the game froze at the splash screen, I'd suggest that your firewall was indeed notifying you that FSO is trying to access the Interwebs. But as far as I could figure, the game freezes at a different point on your end. And I think the Windork firewall doesn't query about new software. Or I wouldn't know. Never used/trusted the damn thing enough to find out.
-
Have you tried starting it in window mode? It's under dev tools in the launcher.
@Lobo: Well at least we didn't post the same thing at the same time this time.
-
Also try with "-noaudio"
-
tried no sound in window tried with fs2 basic settings all off that is , tried wiith non open gl graphics , i guess its a lost cause , goes hunting for my linux install
-
Corrupted FS2_Open registry setting? I know there is a list of what should be in there somewhere on here.
And before you ask yes there are some settings that are used by FS2 and the total conversions.
One other thing to try. As much as I hate it have you tried going back to a system restore point before the modem software install?
-
mmmmmmmmm good idea batman so how do i get to it on xp and what do i slap it with ...........
and yes tried a system restore , with no joy , even tried talking nicely to my computer
found this error log entry but i aint got a clue

-
well it looks like my windows build is at fault it seems tohave lost a few things ( thanks bill and the team) now when i boot up i dont get the xp splash screens just an old nt style login etc.........
so ill have to try and run a windows fix but if someone can tell me where and how to get to the fs2_open reg file so i can check it has the right info before i do this i would be grateful.......
-
FS.exe refers to retail freespace exe file. And you'll probably have much less luck trying to get that work than fs open exe files. However assuming you have tried running fs open debug builds those should have generated 'fs2_open.log' file into the data directory. Assuming they run far enough to create one in the first place. Contents of that file would help.
Also make sure you are using fs open launcher (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher.rar)
-
thanks everyone for taking te time to read and offer advice ive narrowed the problem down now , its an open gl problem , i can run in D3D8 but not n open gl , i have reinstalled my graphics card driver (nvidia 7300in a laptop) still no joy so what do i do do i try to re-install open gl and if so which version and where do i get it or is it just a setup thing i need to re do in the graphics card setup , crosses my fingers and hopes some one knows what to do .....
running xp sp3 on acer laptop, nvidia 7300 overclocked, andbefore last week was running fs like a dream .........
thanks in advance

For the nth time on HLP: OpenGL is included in your graphics drivers. If you get an error report saying "Unable to find proper pixel format...", check that you've installed (the newest) drivers for your chipset as well.
-
ok so opengl is in my graphic drivers i accept that , so if my laptop was happily running everything before and now refuses to run in open gl within the fs enviroment what could be causing this ? if it is not my driver????; and im running all the latest updates possible for my laptop , and was before this started to refuse to run in open gl setting
-
maybe you need OpenGL 1.1 ;7 :drevil:

Regardless of whether that is supposed to be a joke or not, the next time you mention the downloadable OpenGL on this board or even make the slightest reference to it, I'll hang you. With your own legs.

Hmmm... that's right - you don't find that funny.

oooops sorry i forgot here it is
and im using latest launcher and have ben for ages, please realise this is across the bored , tbp doesnt work ,wingcommander doesnt work, btrl doesnt work ,earth minibar doesnt work............should i post a log for each one

There seems to be something rather odd/badly wrong with your GPU and OpenGL as the opengl fails to initialize at all... As for what the problem could be... i'm not exactly expert in this issue. And uploading logs from the rest of the fs based mods is not going to help.
You could try running something like GPU-Z or OpenGL Extensions Viewer - or even dxdiag as those results might help sorting out the problem. But as you have already uninstalled and then reinstalled the drivers i cant really see what that could be.
Well.. i suppose you could play on directX or then at least make sure you havent somehow disabled your opengl or whole hardware rendering somehow...
-
tbp doesnt work ,... earth minibar doesnt work...
Psst. Unless I'm completely mistaken, "Earth-Minibar" is part of TBP.
I'm also drawing a blank here. Try GPU-Z. Maybe it can tell us something.
-
i can run on direct x , ive re istalled direct x again version 9c ive retested with acer nvidia driver no joy there ive got the latest driver from n vidia no joy there as far as i can see my open lis active ( using nvidia tweak) i closed all open gl rebboted opened all open gl rbooted etc, could my fs2_open rgistry file e corrupt and is not demanding the open gl settings as fubar suggested ,and if so how do i get to it and what can i do to it lol
anyway thanks ppl , ill probably just have to wait for my paycheck and get a new had disc and reinstall a new system with fs on it and hope that works...................

FS2/FS Open registry entries are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Volition/FreeSpace2
You could try still the OpenGL Extension Viewer.. After you have started it.. go to 'Report' option and copy paste the 'report' text window here, just place code tags around it

hmm.. I suppose it might help if you clear that portion from the registry (the FreeSpace2 stuffs display option and then run the fs open launcher again).. Hmm.. one other thing that might help would be to use one of the driver cleaners to make sure there are no old drivers causing some odd interference. Can you give a listing of the files in your main freespace open directory - if there is something that could be causing it?
-
Have you tried running the retail launcher and setting up your graphics card through the setup button? Get the retail launcher to detect your graphics card, save the settings and exit the launcher. Then try your FSOpen launcher again.
I had to do this recently after a couple of hours scratching my head after upgrading to Vista and related drivers for my graphics card.
-
yeah i tried the launcher and still no go , i would post what is in my fs folder but i think that it doesnt make a lot of differance as tbp, btrl, minibari, wing commander and fs all have different folders and none work ,i have made no changes to all but the fs folder and the sole change to the fs folder was to add the last nightly build which i do at least 3 times a week , so that i can bug test multiplayer and the recent builds , i think unless someone has an outstanding idea ill just wait a week or so , and put a new system on a new disc and start from scratch , i dont want to kill this install as it has far too many programs and games that work just fine ,
so i thank all of you who have taken the time to think and help and ill just havetoo go a week or so without fs, which im sure i can just about cope with :eek2: :nervous:
once again thanks guys the soultion was simple , a complete reinstall of windows, i tried repairing it and it just continued to die, so i tsted the hard disc n its ok so im going through the sow process of reinstaling every thing , but fs works!!!!!!!!!!
