Title: New Voice Client Option
Post by: JGZinv on October 28, 2008, 01:58:44 am
Over at FringeSpace we've been using the GSC voice/chat client for a while
now and it's been seen to work out pretty well. I personally think it's better
than say Ventrillo... more streamlined, free, and you don't have to bog down
your connection with hosting the server. The server is free too, can be moved around
for the best placement...

It's skinnable, has media player plugins in the latest release, can work with a
file uploading service among other things.

*Note that right now I'd suggest using the Ver 1 client not the 2.0 beta as they are doing
some bugfixes. Ver 1 is quite fine for whatever use.

But the main point I'd like to make here is that the devs behind it have said with
enough support they'll add new games for in game chat functions. With all the mods here,
I believe we can make enough of an impact (hey the FS(forbidden number) topics at Interplay get
enough traffic) over at the GSC forums to perhaps really make something happen so we all could
get a unified system to work with.

They already have added Decent Freespace... so why not get FS2 SCP added in there?

Any support for the idea here guys? We can make a forum thread at GSC if we can get this going....

Edit - On a side note where their devs wanted game suggestions put was in this portion of their forums:

Hello jgzinv,

We would like to add support for freespace 2. Is there a link you can give us to a installer of the game client itself?

The current thread at GSC is here:

I've provided the link to the Open installer - anyone from SCP want to say anything
concerning 3.6.10 or otherwise that they might want to know about?

You could provide them with links to the conversions as well.  Say TBP from my sig.

3.6.10 has the lobby support back.  That might be something they are interested in knowing about.

There will be a modified set of available command line options if that's what they're concerned with, although as long as you set it up in the launcher once, it shouldn't matter to their client.  Everything else will probably work the same as 3.6.9.  I believe the Manual IP connect override is set via the registry and not the command line, which is how I think a lot of games do it.  They of course will need an existing copy of FS2 as well.

If it's a lobby itself, they probably intend to bypass that and use IP direct connections.  I'm not sure how well that will work though.
