Title: a 2d and 3d shockwave for the masses
Post by: Topgun on October 30, 2008, 05:04:46 pm
A while back Einstine909 created a really good 2d shockwave. since everyone is complaining about shockwaves, I got all fed-up and decided to make his shockwave 3d.
well, here you go, you complaining Noobs ;)
I also included the original 2d ones for those who missed them.
EDIT:

Wait... which is better to use? DDS or TGA?

DDS, always.

If compressed DDS loosk too horrible, then uncompressed DDS is better than TGA (even if filesize would be bigger).

Also, there's something wrong with the shockwave.pof included in the download... it seems like it doesn't have texture or something.

EDIT: On further inspection, the effect files seem to be using alpha blending instead of additive blending. I'm not sure if it will cause any catastrophic fail, but at the very best they are using 33% more memory than necessary. Additive blending (black=transparent) works just fine on effects such as this.

Also, I must convess that I don't really like the effect itself that much. :nervous: It looks like an expanding cloud rather than a shockwave propagating through something... and there's not enough variability during the expansion... it's kinda hard to explain. It could work exellently as a shield hit effect or some weapon effect, but I can't see it working as a shockwave to be honest.

Yeah, I just tried it out and what I got was an expanding greenish pixelated mess. I forgot if the stuff is supposed to go in maps or effects, but either one gives me the same result. This is the 3D DDS Blue version, by the way.

ok, I will ses what I can do about that.

:wakka:

Why did you include both the DDS and TGA stuff??

Aside from that,

because older computers don't like dds and some people like the absolute highest quality no matter the cost.
it's also nice to have the uncompressed versions if somebody wants to edit the files for some reason.

Anyone know what to do to make the 3D shockwave version work?

try tga. delete the dds file first, then copy the tga ones in to the folder. see what happens.

put the model in data/models and the tga's or dds's in maps.

But the model has no texture specified?  :nervous:
Or does that not matter?

hmm, must be a bug in my version of pcs. try adding the texture "Shockwave" to the pof file.

And when you're done, upload it for us who are illiterate when it comes to these things, please.

Yeah I attempted to add the missing texture "Shockwave" and failed miserably

Oh for hells sake.

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41b2114aa4782081ab1eab3e9fa335cabc3428d34e158d5d

2D Simple: as many frames as the retail ani. This is _not_ the same effect though as outlined above nor is it a DDS'ification of the retail effect.

2D High: Moar frames for your enjoyment (at faster speeds it's really nice for the Meson Bomb)

3D Simple: A shockwave pof with a texture that it expands along the model

3D Uber: Many already have it, as it is the Adv Effects high end shockwave.

Mind, this is only to tide people over. Effects processing and other stuff (last I heard) as well as some final testing are taking place.

Wait, what? So this is the current effect and not a fixed version of the version in your first post?

Who's first post?

I think you mean some one else.

I _could_ do a fixed version of what Topgun posted, but that is not my responsibility. Unless some one asks the both of us very nicely.

And honestly, nothing against the effect, I just don't really like it as a shockwave.

Wow, never thought that those shockwaves I made were going to be used... looks like i was wrong...

If there is an interest, I can dredge up those old shockwaves I made and make em better.

I did, in retrospect. For some reason I'd thought you were the topic creator when I made that post. Obviously not, though.

I keep trying to add the shockwave texture to the pof but it doesn't seem to add it. will try with an older not--experimental pcs2.

I would be interested. but I would be even more interested if you told me how you made it.
I know you made the texture in photoshop then animated it in blender, but how did you animate it?

Ugh... Its been awhile...

How well do you know the node setups in blender?

I will edit this to explain when I find out how it works myself...

I see what you did, most of the steps are just brightening the image. but I don't know how you animated it.  care to upload the packed .blend?

Well I think that file has been lost a few computers ago... but I think I have a way of making a better setup, so give me a few days and Ill see what I can do...
