Title: can i modify the saves?
Post by: dr_costas on November 03, 2008, 05:23:52 pm
hi there, i am trying to replay a mission (fsport) but i cannot, since it automaticaly saved my first try. I played it once then decided i want to replay it but half way through i wanted to find a walkthrough so i quited the mission. When i went back, i was on the next mission. Is there a way to edit the saves so I can restart it?

Many thanks

There's no need. you can replay all completed missions from your current active campaign from the tech room.

Were there Linux builds for FRED? Or, if you're running a Windows build with WINE, do make sure that it is in your \freespace2\ directory.

hi there, i managed to run fred after a bit of playing around but i did not know how to open and edit my saves...it seems i will continue my campaign without killing that unknown after all... (unless i play the campaign from the beginning for the 10th time :P )

Well you can extract the .fc2 file and edit it to start at the mission you want to.

Yeah. I also don't know any methods for tampering with the pilot files. Campaign files are another matter and you could cook up one where you begin the campaign from the mission of your choosing, but that wouldn't be exactly the thing you're looking for.

With a VP viewer. Maja is cross-platform. Use it.

In order to revise things: FUBAR suggested you'd extract freespace.fc2 (the FS1 campaign file) from the FSPort missions vp, then edit it to start at the mission of your choosing. There is no reasonable way to edit the pilot files themselves.

ahhhaa, many thanks, i got it now! if only there was a way to edit saved campaigns or at least for the game to realise that once you want to replay a misison, you actually want to replay it and not move on to the next if you quit half way through the replayed mission! I think I will leave things as they are, I just wanted to see what happens if I kill a shivan from the beginning, the ship was so close to dying but I run out of rockets...

I can spoil it for you:
Quote from: Out of the Dark, Into the Night debriefing
In all of their recent attacks in Terran Space, not one of these unknown fighters had been destroyed.

Your destruction of one of these new enemies has already boosted morale.  Well done, Pilot.
And a couple of extra points that would get you a teeny bit closer to your next promotion. That's it.
