Be that as it may, I've heard that they used the same or at least similar technique during X Japan's comeback gigs and/or Hide Memorial Summit.

... though in that case they used old video footage instead of live-action material due to hide being deceased.

We sort of have the technology. A member of my family works down at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque. I don't remember the specifics, but we don't have quite the Star Wars easy type of hologram, but we can scan and create 3D images in a room with the developing technology.

Well, learn the specifics. I assume most of us here are interested

IIRC the closest we have to real holograms is tricks with a slanted spinning mirror.

That seriously looks like a really bad video trick!

It does look like Obi-Wan from Episode V.

Apparently the image wasn't visible to those in the room.

We can make holographic photographs. these rely on interference between the light source and a reference beam. If the reverse of the reference beam is passed through the film, a 3d-image is projected. Seems pretty cool the first time you see it, but it can't easily be scaled up, it cannot move, and it cannot be transmitted.this is due to the fact that it relies on vey small scale features (around the wavelength of the laser). However, an image can be etched from the initial hologram, and this can provide a semi-3d image with no reference beam (used a lot in credit cards, bank notes, and even some coins). In the first sort of hologram, the fully 3d image appears in front of the film, while in the second sort and image with limited depth appears behind the film.

That vid is total crap. If we had hologram technology, ALOT of people would know about it. Not one news station. Even if they had a hologram, it would not have been that advanced. They would need many lazers to make it work.

Thats why, AFAIK, if they have created some small holograms, its in a inclosed room, with the lazers all over the walls.

That's pretty much how modern-day hologram technology works.

There's a hologram Warney at the Australian sporting museum at the MCG apparently, though I've not seen it myself.

Looks horribly fake. And easy to get away with. The whole "moments ago" headline on the screen shows this off. Why couldn't they do this live instead? No, moments ago instead.

Dude it's like a month old; it's hardly a bump.

So it's just green-screening and video compositing. Granted it's a little more complicated, but still: I am not impressed AT ALL.
