Title: Formal letter to HLP
Post by: Charismatic on November 06, 2008, 10:37:29 pm
Hey guys,
I'll do my best to do this short, and sweet.

Backstory:
Not many of you know me, which is a shame, but some call me Ephili. I have been here at HLP for many years. I moved here with the exodus of the remaining Mulitplayers when PXO died.

I don't post too much, tho I want to. Its mainly a 'shyness' because of my first few posts here. It was about FS3 and to take action, and instead of channeling my enthusiasm I was horribly flamed and charred on a grill.

I wanted to get involved in all projects and was willing to MOD and test and everything. I even tried out voice acting for Derelicts re release. But I did not have the skills or ability to do so. Learning to MOD from scratch was too hard on Truespace, and my PC couldn't (and still cant) really handle SCP that well. So that killed alot of what I intended to bring and contribute to HLP. I don't think anyone knows that BTW.

I started a clan, the EvilOnes, back in the PXO days and its still running, but not in freespace obviously.

What I really came to say:

Through the years I really came to admire this community. It set the standard, a high standard, for all other on-line communities. It is the best i have found (overlooking the flaming of FS3 newbies). I aspire for my forum, to be as close as possible to this community. HLP is very mature, yet humorous. Many people are well learned. Spelling and grammer is taken seriously. And everyone keeps up on world events and news. I love that. I also love the fact that you guys are very good at finding unique information, and able to find backings for most points you say. So that brings a high level of credibility and respect. I wish all other communities would all be like this.

I do my best to teach responsibility, respect, and maturity to the members of my forum. I have not had alot of success but i try. I would like my community to know whats happening in the world, and be able to research things and find out facts, back up their beliefs, to be able to spell and all that great stuff. (Its not, they don't care about spelling, its just HLP does have alot of nit picky people and sets a high standard)

I just appreciate all the hard work thats been done, and been put in over the years on various FS projects. Keep up the great work.
HLP just means alot to me, and i plan on being here forever. HLP is just something different then anything else you see on-line IMHO. HLP is keeping freespace alive.

One day I will get a good gaming PC, and I will get SCP in its fullest. It has been hard, seeing all the great screenshots, all the new campaigns, and not being able to experience them. Its always an arms lenght out of my reach. One day I will contribute the way I have always wanted to.

When I joined HLP i got the feeling if you don't contribute you were not accepted as well. That is another reason i really, don't know any of you personally. I wish to change that. And by this post, i wish to state, tho i have not contributed, FREDed or anything like that, I really want to. I'm just not capable now.

So keep on doing a great job HLP. Admins, you are doing a great job too.

I just wanted to let you all know, how much I appreciate this community.

(Yes this is full of grammer and spelling mistakes. I just got off work and it's late. Sorry.)

Don't worry Ephili, I contribute nuffin' and I still post here. I absolutely agree with everything you wrote here. This is the best forum on the web, (at least from all the ones I have visited) and I respect a lot of the people here, (not all, but a lot).

Hate to sound like a hippocrit, but that mainly comes from the fact that most HLPers here are 18+

We were once your age................about thirteen+ years ago on average. (moreso for the senior mods:nervous:

But we're not too "old boys club" about it are we?

Sorry, but this just made me laugh. :D

Always nice to see an old timer return though.

Wow, I'm touched.  Don't worry, we were all noobs at some point (though judging from your post count you're no noob).  I wish you luck with getting a better PC.  I doubt SCP itself takes up that much power, and you can turn off the mvp's.  Heck, I'm on a 5 year old comp and it can run the vp's.

Slightly offtopic but,
Retsof- When i run SCP, with more then 1 cap ship, it lags, too much to DOF, every time a cap is within my viewing range.

Now when 2 or more caps start beaming eachother... i might as well just quit and watch TV.

Its that bad. Maby a 1 on 1 chat with someone who knows the launcher well might do the trick, but, well, well see.

Well, what I said was proven several times. Especially in that "Me and Zman, vs all of HLP" battle in the 'Evolution vs Creation' topic. That, was another..thing that made me gunshy to post. Tried to say 'hey im different', and got beat down.  :nervous:

I barely contribute here. What little i could do to help people setting up fs2 open to whatever graphics i could pipe out to show examples of stuff i hope exist.
It all works out though.

Yes, Long Live HLP

I feel guilty for not contributing much, if anything, at all to the community. I have one or two ideas but modding/FREDding/modelling/GIMPing or whatever else isn't in my skill set, although I have tried experimenting with FRED, Blender and GIMP a little. Finding the will and the time to learn is a problem. Not sure about voice acting either as I'm a bit shy.

You sound as though you have the commitment so I say go for it (once your comp is sorted of course).

Finding the will and the time to learn is a problem.

That's exactly my problem, I've tried to model but I just get completely lost, even following tutorials!

I've tried FREDing to, but I'm never happy with the results and I'd be too embarrassed to let anyone experienced to see them.

Hell yeah.

Ephili, I wish I had your passion. You'd do a hell of a lot more work with my ideas (for campaigns, I mean) than I would. I know I wish I contributed to HLP a lot more, but I'm too lazy and unmotivated to work on anything original.

Hope you get your chance soon, bud. ;)

As for what you said about HLP, I really have to agree. We got some really logical and hard-working people on here. I know it's probably the most mature forum I've ever been on. I just wish I knew about it after PXO shut down; i've only been here for almost 2 years (which seriously feels like a very, very short time).

Playtest (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,125.0.html)!

There are plenty of things the average member can do even if they don't have any modding ability. Playtesting is one of the biggies. Occasionally I've even seen missions posted and no one has tested them at all. Not just in the Academy but also in the missions and campaigns forum.

All you have to do is play the mission and give your opinion on what worked and what didn't. It's not hard and it is very useful.

There are other things like wiki editing, etc you can also do.

Now I'm not saying you have to contribute back to HLP in any way other than posting. It's not an obligation. But if you're feeling you want to but don't have the modding skills needed to give back in that way there are plenty of other ways you can help. :)

Sorry Chari, but this is just too funny.

His first post.

Think I might start playtesting some missions as well.

I swear my spelling was not that bad. All that pirate talk and crap must have messed it up a bit.

Yeah its funny to read but, we needed to do something before the mulitplayer completely died out. How did no one else see that?

Anyways.

BTW, I have always said Volution instead of ...what, Volition? Even if i spell it correctly i say volUtion.

One should never underestimate the value of tech support. That's why I ended up like this.

I hate doing tech support, I remember this time when I needed to get some woman to reboot her pc, but she kept shuting down the monitor...

I spend 5 minutes talking with her untill I figured out what was she doing wrong  :hopping:
