Alright, my fellow Americans: it's about time to have some fun just like our fellow Londoners are. :p
Since the US is huge and we can't possibly meet all in one spot, I think it would be best to organize it into different meets, depending on region:
HLP West Coast--somewhere that accommodates anyone from Washington to Long Beach, West Coast to the western edge of the Rockies.
HLP Central--somewhere for our resident Texans, Coloradans, and anyone else living between the Rockies and the Mississippi.
HLP Midwest--this goes north to Minnesota and Wisconsin, south to Florida, but no further east than Ohio.
HLP East Coast--New Yorkers, DC, Carolinas, etc.
Possibly around the Spring Break season, so more people will be free..any takers?
-
I live and Denver, and have a fairly small travel radius, can't legally drink, but I'd certainly make an effort to go to any such gathering.
EDIT:
And yeah, I suppose having one US gathering would be kinda like having an Euro gathering. It's just a lot of travel for something like that
-
Yep. The reason why HLP London has done so well is that with the exception of Free Terran we all actually live or work within a 8 mile radius.
-
Do we even have 2 US HLPers who live in the same city?
-
Judging from the clustermap, I would doubt it. We do have people that live fairly closely though, mostly in the New England area though.
-
Me, CP, and Goober have gotten together.
Hey, wasn't Black Wolf supposed to be heading to the USA last month?! *looks*
-
Do we even have 2 US HLPers who live in the same city?
As a matter of fact, Spartan_214 and I are roommates at our college dorm.
-
Well I guess the nice thing is when the Strogg start nuking cities, they can only take out 2 hlpers at a time in the US.
Anyway, I'm down for anything I can get to.
-
I think Stratcomm lives near me, but he is always really busy doing ultra secret IBM stuff.
Nobody else around Raleigh, NC?
-
Why not do a combined spring break? I'm in Miami.
-
Do we even have 2 US HLPers who live in the same city?
Me and KappaWing live within about an hour or so of each other. Metro Detroit, FTW!
-
I live about halfway between LA and San Fran on the coast (Monterey), so I'm down if the West coasters and Arizona types want to chill somewhere out here.
-
I didnt even read the first post.
but hey, what about HLP in Wisconsin! Id be there! :D
-
If one were held in NorCal, I would attend. Oregon is too far for me to travel, and I refuse to travel to SoCal.
-

I'm not that far from Raleigh, Live in Roanoke VA myself which is only about 3 or 4 hours away and I have relatives that live in Durham NC.
-
I am in Princeton, NJ and places between roughly NYC and Washington DC would work for me, although it could be a long time before I'm free for anything. Galemp works very close to where I live and we met a few times last month.
-
I live in the general Philly area, although I don't know that I'd be willing to actually attend one of these things. We introverts tend to like keeping to our own affairs. :p
-
You're the fresh prince? :eek2:
-
The Fresh Prince lives in Bel Air now. :D
-
Bah we need one in Wisconsin!
-
Should i unsticky this :nervous:
-
No, just do one in Wisconsin! Then well be fine.
Would someone like to take a... detailed count of how many in which regin? Maby do two seperate ones?
Maby less regions, and include more area each one.

I think the first step would be to assign a head "doer" to each region.......
but i'm in London and exempt from such things :p

Why not do it in St. Louis, Missouri? Interstate-70 West and Interstate-70 East are straight shots to St. Louis. I traveled from Columbia, which is two hours west of St. Louis to Washington, D.C in about 16 Hours. Or, we could do Columbia, MO which is in the frikkin very middle of the country and is my local College town. I don't have the ability to Organize it, but if someone wanted to do it where everyone could meet easily, no road is more easily traveled than the one to Columbia, MO. It's clean and under 100,000 people.
It's worth a try.
-
Not a bad idea, actually. Choose a city that's clean and a touristy.
-

There goes my city. :p
-
*cough* Wisconsin *cough*
-
I'd love to go to the West Coast one, preferably in NorCal. Perhaps we can arrange a meeting in San Jose or San Fran?
-
Those two cities are only about an hour and a half from where I am, so I'm down for that. :)
-
Do we even have 2 US HLPers who live in the same city?
Yar, there's a few of us who live in DC and its suburbs.
-
Well lets take a count of certain citieis, and who can travel to which ones.
I, in WI, cannot drive down to North Cali for this... so lol, maby lets do two seperate ones. One on the Left side one on the Right?
-
Sorry to keep butting in, i know i'm not a resident, just a suggestion. Narrow down a list of candidates then have a poll for each/the main location.
-
Depending on when it is (weekends only, major cities only), I can fly and I would prefer either to Canada or somewhere within about 200 mi of the C48 border with Canada.
-

Some1 do this.
-
Allright, so who is on the East Coast, near North Carolina, and enjoys alcohol?
-
I'm going to jump in here, and i think i'm entitled to, since the original HLP meet was attempted by me (even though it fell through).
I think it's best to do it in a central location...yes even if no one in HLP lives there. it's not fair for everyone to have to travel except one person.
Also plane tickets are cheap these days. I'm flying to Colorodo beginning of next year, and when I purchased the ticket (~90 days in advance), it came to $148 ROUND TRIP. i haven't seen a ticket that cheap in years. Of course now, the same flight is almost $300, but that just proves my point - the earlier you do it, the better!
Finally, if we all fly (which, let's be honest, is going to be the most practical. I'd rather fly somewhere for $150.00 and 3 hours, than spend $80 in gas, and waste 48 hours driving. not to mention food costs along the way, wear on the car, etc...), then it should be a city that's a hub for airlines. Houston is the base of operations for Continental airlines, so i would of course suggest that, but then once here, there really isn't much to do.
If i get a 60 day heads up, i'm definately in. I'll fly anywhere in the continental united states.
First things first, i think everyone needs to agree upon a PLACE. then a DATE. then after that i'll make some calls and get cheap hotels, etc.
-
If we are going to do this, I'd have to say we should plan on more than one day. If we spend, for example, a weekend, the "value" is increased. We either need to split East/West or all go towards the center of the country. I'd recommend the former--it makes more sense for everyone. The other alternative is gauge Canadian reaction and choose somewhere such as Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver. There are plenty of things to do all over the USA, but I think somewhere good for summer would be the best option. The alternative is do something annually, like whichever team wins the World Series or the Super Bowl or the Stanley Cup is the city we all gather in.
As I said before--I'm in Miami, Florida. I can go just about anywhere in the CONUS, though I would prefer along the northern border. If there are many people in the Northeast, that would be a solid choice for a get-together. If not, we may have to rely on the UK-population, which I would say has an abnormally high number of active and legally-aged people. That's why I think we should consider Montreal or Quebec--the drinking age there too is 18, so acquisition of booze in public and social places would be much easier and safer.
-
If we're looking at airline hubs, that's gives us Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Houston, Denver, and Los Angeles as potential meets. That's great, since that means every area of the country has a reasonably local meeting place.
If we were to divide simply East/West (dividing at the Mississippi), I'd propose Washington for the East and Denver for the West.

Why not Denver or Atlanta? If we did a winter meetup, I'd be much more interested in Denver. By the way--basically, count me in. I can fly just about anywhere.
-
Denver's good since it's in the middle of the country and most flights from the major airports don't cost much for those trips. Atlanta is good, but DC is right in the middle of the East Coast, a little more convenient for the HLPers in the Northeast.
Atlanta is a nice city to visit though. :)
-
Yeah. I think Denver is our best bet--it doesn't seem to be inhabited by any HLPBB'ers, and has a good deal that goes on as far as recreation and bars go. Anyways--the only problem is not everyone who would be willing to go is 21 yet. The legal and responsible action would be to simply not supply any alcohol to them, which the illegal and more friendly action would be hit a liquor store and get booze, then go somewhere and drink it and hang out. Or something like that. Here in Miami, I'd say just about any club or bar would be happy to have those 16+'s drink so long as they get paid.
The other option I see is somewhere like Virginia (Virginia Beach, specifically). Plenty to do, along our Right Coast (where it seems most visitors are from), and all that. The other focused group we seem to have is those in Quebec or Ontario, which again I think would be the best overall choice if we want to replicate the UK's atmosphere. I think it would be better if all 18+s could drink, but we would lose a lot of people by going over international borders.
List of NA hub cities...
- Toronto
- Vancouver
- Atlanta
- Seattle
- Los Angeles
- Chicago
- St. Louis
- Miami
- Dallas
- Raleigh
- Houston
- Newark
- New York City
- Boston
- Denver
- Memphis
- San Francisco
- Philadelphia
- Charolette
Quite a list.
-
Yeah I'm currently without passport (but plan on applying for one very soon) and only 20. I'd still be down for a Denver meet for any HLPer willing to fly.

What's your vacation schedule? And if we do this, do realize I'm pretty poor. Given notice and motivation, I can eek out the money for a standby ticket. Anyways--can we get a list of people still interested?
-
Don't forget to discuss NTV if you meet each other... :)
-
The meets are pretty cool for that sort of "classified discussion" i've told Karajorma a few nuggets of info about post concept stuff and things about my mini-campaing / mods.
-
bob-san... count me in.
i don't think you all should put that much weight on drinking. i mean seriously... i know my opinion on this is a minority these days, but i'm a firm believer on being able to have a good time and hang out without alcohol.
not to mention, if we want to get alcohol and go hang out in one of our hotel rooms, it won't matter how old you are ;)

I know, but it's more fun to be in public or with good friends. Anyways--that's definitely a valid point, that you can have just as much fun (or more) without alcohol as you can with. I'm putting weight on it since I think there needs to be some sort of introduction, considering that the USA is a big nation and most or all of us will have to travel hundreds of miles, at least. Anyways--dropping by a liquor store and having a 21+ buy a few bottles would be the best choice.
Ok, I'll count you in too, Stealth. Who else would be willing to fly?
-
I kind of know what you mean. I've yet to get anything beyond slightly tipsy myself, and I drink beer for the taste, not the alcohol. :p
I can't say I'd ever definitely show up at one of these things, but if there was one in the Northeast within driving range, I'd at least give it some good consideration.
-
Alright, awesome, Stealth's in.
Don't we have some HLPers in the Denver area anyway?
-

Well that's the point. When I drink, it's to relax and maybe get a bit tipsy. Anyways--consider going, Mongoose. I would think a 2-3 night stay with various activities (skiing/snowboarding, drinking, tourism).
-
I don't have any money to do it anyway, and my extreme introversion answers in the definite negative. :p
-

I'm pretty introverted as well. Anyways--start saving money. Seriously--I'm sure many of us are introverts, not that that's an actual problem. That's the reason for some booze--relax, maybe get a bit tipsy.
-
Social lubrication, helping people get laid since 1785
I think there's a good chance this meet will happen in the next two months (tops) with some good planning :)

When does everyone have time off? I am off from Feb 26 (earliest to leave) to Mar 9 (latest to return). We need to find common time off and plan some event at least, IMO. Anyways--I think flying down on Friday afternoon (so to arrive Friday night) and then meeting that night, then having say Saturday for some winter sports (someone would need to look into the cost of rentals) followed by meeting downtown, and then flying out Sunday afternoon would be the "common" route for many of us that have school or work. It would give us maximum time to meet up, hang out, see the area, and then get back. The lowest I see, though, is $290/person for such a scenario, not including the cost of transportation. That's with all of us staying in the same room (2 doubles and a cot?).
I think we also need to consider a touristy/airport hub with a attending member of our community. Sort of setup 1/2 nights where we "crash" there, or something similar. Obviously this won't work that well if they have many roommates, but I guess that's still the standing problem with HLP USA--we're such a big nation that we don't all have the luxury of jumping in a car for an hour or two and meeting up.
-

Kind of hard to save with no income. And I'd probably be a very angry drunk. :p
Seriously, though, I wouldn't get involved with anything like this myself. If I'm not willing to fly somewhere to meet up with a group of online friends I consider myself to be very close with, I'm not about to do so in this instance, seeing as I'm not exactly anything more than an acquaintance with anyone here. :p
-
i should add, that if we plan this right, and don't splurge on hotels, we can do this (flight included) for under $500/person for 3 nhights

Agreed, though being a university student, I also need a job. I think we should push this back to summer and perhaps choose Virginia or something instead. It's the other side of the country, but it's a better summer spot. It'll give us time to save $500 for "summer vacation", plus most of us who would be interested can take vacation time during summer.
-
You could always have a webcast HLP usa and get drunk simultaneously.
-
You could always have a webcast HLP usa and get drunk simultaneously.
Not all of us will be able to buy booze. And why limit it to the USA in that situation? ;) Anyways--how much does the normal UK meet cost per person?
-
I always try to take at least a tonne (£100) for rounds, food and what-not.
-
Yeah. Overall HLP USA will be expensive. Anyways--anyone else interested?
-
if the whole reason you all are planning on meeting up is to get drunk, then count me out.
sorry, but perhaps it's just in my old age, this whole "let's drink" thing is starting to get old. i'm becoming a big fan of chatting, and doing fun things, and sure, have a drink or two, but being around people that are drunk is not one of my funner things to do
-

I'm not on Colonol Dekker's boat exactly. 1-2 drinks to make it an easier environment--I'm for. Hang out and talk, maybe drop by a club, &c is the general idea. I most certainly won't be getting plastered--I'm legally not allowed to drink in the USA, but whatever. If we want to go by the rules 100% and there are others <21, I'd hold off on drinking.
-
rules are meant to be broken, especially rules influenced by silly puritans and overbearing mothers.
-
Silly puritans and overbearing mothers?
Try statistical evidence that people who don't start drinking until their twenties are unlikely to ever become alcohol-dependent.
-
I actually just started drinking and would likely bring a tasty beverage (I'm not into beer yet, but gin drinks, vodka drinks, malt beverages, wine, etc are all fair game it seems). I doubt I'll actually be going though. I'm in Saint Louis, has anyone following this thread noticed if there's anyone else anywhere near here? KC perhaps?
-
The Midwest is depressingly empty, unfortunately.
-
Well, it is the home of Kansas.
-
Yeah. Overall HLP USA will be expensive. Anyways--anyone else interested?
Yep, interested, but I won't be able to do anything until February at the earliest :( (I'm in Charleston until 2/Feb/2009, and then moving North)
-
Can't really travel much. If it's in Denver I'll certainly come, schedule willing.
-
Way things are looking that's probably where it's going to be so you're in luck.
-
Actually I think Denver in spring will be the best choice overall. Can everyone post when they're planning to be off? We can then coordinate best. Denver in Feb/Mar/Apr will probably be best... still snow but also better weather in the valleys.
-
Does anyone live between Charlotte, NC and Port Canavral (sp?), FL?
I am driving there in about a week and some days and it would be super fun to stop and irritate some of yall in person. I do love to irritate.
-
Boston here, sometimes I manage to get out west (GDC, that sort of thing) or to the Midwest (Ohio) for board meetings or what not.
I try and post when I am expecting to be somewhere :)

-
Philly area here, and there's little to no chance of me going very far outside of the I-95 corridor. DC is about the absolute farthest south or west I'd go for something of this nature.
I think we'd need to have multiple regional meets. Restricting it to Denver weeds out a very large number of people who are simply unable or unwilling to buy plane tickets to go halfway across the damn country.
At the absolute bare minimum, there should be an east coast meet also. (Most likely ending up in DC, Philly, or Baltimore.)
-
It seems like we have a lot of Easterners and a lot of Californians. The only people who should have problems are us Westerners.
-

And Southerners. I'm looking to move back to the Northeast for my next year of University, though.
-
Im up for Chicago.
-
hlp west should be held in phoenix, so i dont have to spend more than a buck and a quarter to go :D
-
Itd be cheap for me too. :D
-
i say we graph exactly where everyone interested in going lives, and then pick the location of a city closest to the center of all of them :D

And when we get there, realize there is a single-room motel and a corner diner, and that it's a county that has prohibited booze?
-
I hate dry counties.
-
well obviously we don't meet EXACTLY in the middle, as in, pinpoint location...
what i mean is we find the closest city worth going to, but closest to the center location.
-

Yeah, nice. Everyone listed what cities they live in already right? (Its been a while sence I crawled upon this toipc)
State: WI
City: Hartford (its close enough from me. 20 minutes)

:bump:

my cell number is 919 607 3959
come to raleigh on a friday night, call me up, and join me for drinking and battlestar

You're going to end up dismembered in somebody's freezer, Fluffems.

Actually any old icebox would do. Still keeps the meat nice and fresh.
...not speaking from experience or anything. :nervous:
...ummm...
SO, HLP USA!

-
yeah when are we going to be doing this!?
-
Someone pick the city first.
-
I personally think St. Louis would be the perfect city to do this; it's not gigantic, it's in the middle of the country, nobody has it as "home turf" either. There's clubs and restaurants and bars, of course, so yeah.
-
I'll be in San Angelo in a few months so St Louis would be a nice train ride some weekend.
-
i don't mind flying to STL sometime
-
What about we do this over the 4th of July weekend? I'll have four days off (the 3rd through the 6th) then and I'll be in Texas, so it won't be so god-awful far to travel.

That seems like a good time to me. I can't say 100% yes right now, but how would we do hotel/motel/whatever? I'm not 18 for one...
-
I'm not 18 for one...
I hear nuclear1 has a nice icebox...

er. I'm 18 but not older--so I'd have an issue. Geeze--brain fart when I posted that! :P

Why would you have an issue at 18?
-
Some hotels don't allow you to check in if you're under 21.

-
That, sir, is bull****ts.
We never have problems with that in NC during anime cons
-
It's true in California at least..I've seen it. :p
-
I've seen it in Miami quite a bit--you find somewhere "upscale" and they politely inform you that you have to be older to get a room there. 21 is typically the minimum age. But yes I do know what you mean--when an medium to large organization makes a collective effort (such as anime conventions, major LAN parties, many trade shows) that is typically wavered to an extent... usually because the convention chooses a venue appropriate for the attendees, so to seek out hotels that will rent to minors. Then again, most trade shows are centric around graudated and in-industry individuals, meaning that their venues are more appropriate for the older crowds--such as having CES being held in Miami.
-

i've stayed at five star hotels all over the world, and never once had a problem checking in. i've stayed at $2800/night hotels, and again, at 23 years old, not a problem

Well thankfully the Zombie American populations is relatively small so they probably didn't want to get sued. Now had you still been among the living things might have been different. :pimp:
-
ok seriously. you're all a bunch of slackers. here's what i'm going to have to do - i'm going to have to pick a place, and a day, and make all teh arrangements, and then ya'll just show up...
also i've decided IceFire has to come meet us too :)
-
Just come to the next london one:) seriously, i've been off all this time and still no (official) hlp usa?

How about a joint American-Northern-Western-European meet in like Iceland? :p

Do you live in iceland by any chance? ;) I wouldn't want to give you all dreaded swine flu. .
-
Do you live in iceland by any chance? ;) I wouldn't want to give you all dreaded swine flu. .
New York, actually. Over winter, it becomes quite icy, hence iceland. :p But seriously I think St. Louis is a good spot as it's central, nobody really lives there, and it's sort of touristy.
-
Isn't it underwater though? with all due respect. :-)
-

:wtf: Louisiana is commonly underwater, but last I checked St. Louis (Missouri) is some 466ft from sea level. :blah:

If the applicable part of our country were the size of a postage stamp, like yours, we might have done something already. :p
-
Why if I had access to my moderator buttons. . .
-
I didn't mean the whole country is, but you guys all seem to be in at least striking distance of London, whereas those of us in the States are sprawled out over a few thousand miles of land. We can't all just hop on British Rail and get to where we're going in an hour or so.
-
Who's arounf the Golden Horseshoe area? I'm thinking that Montreal would be a good bet for many New Englanders as well as some Canadians. Maybe New york, or Boston?

i think the most pressing thing right now is just picking a location!!! :p
seriously.
next is pick a date - far out (a good 4 or 5 months or more) so we can all work on transportation, perhaps carpooling, etc.
i think it would be awesome to spend 2 or 3 days hanging out with people i've known on the forums for the last 8 or 9 years. Perhaps bring our computers with so we can have a nice LAN :)
-
Just come to the next london one:) seriously, i've been off all this time and still no (official) hlp usa?
There was an unofficial one (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,55521.0.html) last year at BrickFair (http://www.brickfair.com/). Carl made an appearance. :D
The next one is coming up fairly soon (end of August). Any takers?

Some of us have some beastly (or just big) rigs. Mine is no light-weight now... between the Corsair 750TX, Scythe Infinity, three hard drives, and the naturally heavy steel chassis... mine doesn't fly well anymore. :p
-
pshhh bring it carry-on! i've seen people do it. shoot, i'd do it!

I'm going. Not sure what to bring this time though. I haven't made anything new of note.

The circle is now complete... :drevil:

Yeah, we talked about you, Su-tehp, my brother and I meeting up in NYC. ;) How could I forget the story of you wandering the halls of Penn station with a hand-written sign that said "HLP" on it like some sort of bum who couldn't spell asking for help.
With a Hawaiian shirt, of course. Can't forget the Hawaiian shirt. :p

I think your daughter in that first picture looks a bit perturbed that Goober's eating one of her daddy's kin. :p

It's kinda fun seeing what people look like in real life. :)
Anyone willing to give me odds on Iamzack really being a dude?
PS: we really ought to put up some of the photos from HLP London IX (maybe leaving out Wee Jimmy Wanderin' Hands later efforts). Let them Yankees know what a good looking bunch we are over here.

Nah, there are definitive pics of Zack floating around.

One word: Transvestite

Do we know there are pictures, or have we heard there are?
For all we know, most of the people on here could be fakes. There could only be about thirty of us, mostly fat hairy guys, posting under various aliases... :eek2:
Very few of us have ever really been seen... :nervous:

I will cluck like a chicken if you guys can manage to host a dedicated USA meet with at least five forumites before HLP London X.
That's not an insult, it's meant to be motivational :)
Edit for spelling.
-
we have 4 of us getting together soon in Houston.
If anyone lives around the houston area, join us!
-
Anyone around northwestern Indiana? :nervous:
-
Not just typed, I will cluck into a mic and upload it. . . .

I'll make a new thread. The London ones seem to get stickied, maybe this one will too.

I'm going to be in the US between the 4th of May (LA) and (the beginning of june (Flying out of NYC). If there were to be a HLP USA sometime around, say, then... that'd be cool :)
-
LA is much too far for me, though I could be tempted to head up to New York for a weekend. :)
-
I live just down the freeway from Los Angeles, but you would need a very good reason to make me travel that freeway. To say it gets congested would be an understatement.
-
If there were enough people, I'd be willing to take a train basically anywhere on the west coast to get there simply because I like going places.
Alternatively, everyone could instead go to PAX and combine the meetup there.
This, of course, assumes that anyone would actually want me there xP

You mean LAX?
