Title: Two topic questions
Post by: Charismatic on November 10, 2008, 02:02:30 am
1) Which is what. SCP i always known as FS improved, but now i see the FS Upgrade project, says they make it pritty, and only SCP writes the code.

I thought SCP enhanced graphics, and was the main..thing.

2) Is SCP Vista friendly and compatable?

The Source Code Project works on the source code (duh) of the game engine, with the goal of killing bugs and adding new and needed features. Some major achievements include OpenGL support and OGG support. A decent article can be found at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeSpace_2_Source_Code_Project). In essence, they only improve the code.

The FreeSpace Upgrade Project is best known for compiling and releasing the MediaVPs. They work on newer and better ship models, textures, effects and, on occasion, music. They do not work with the source code themselves, but do attempt to take advantage of the possibilities provided by the game engine.

Summary: the SCP relates to code, the FSU relates to media.

2) Is SCP Vista friendly and compatable?
It has been known to work.

In a nutshell, the SCP makes the FSU possible. They expand the engine to accept better models, textures etc, and then FSU makes those better models and textures. Both make the game pretty, but neither works as well without the other.

The SCP write the code. Since you've gone we've seen the rise of the total conversion. FS2 is no longer the main focus of the SCP and instead stands equal with the total conversions for Babylon 5, Galactica, Starfox, etc.

So it makes sense to decouple the improved FS2 stuff from the improved engine stuff. The SCP make the engine that everyone uses. FSU make the improvements to FS1 & 2.

HLP has SCP for FSO and FSU for MVPs.

Well, it doesn't necessarily work flawlessly on other operating systems.

There are people who play FSO on Vista, so that should hint that it is more than possible to do it.

Works fine, I've even seen it performing better than under XP on occasion. Ran some tests once to shut up some Vista bashers on another forum.
