Title: MediaVP question..
Post by: NicoMG85 on November 18, 2008, 02:18:17 am
Ok, does anyone know of a way to have the MediaVPs work in any campaign?  I can't seem to get them to work unless it's FSport or FS2.  From the launcher I can select mediavp and can play the main FS2 campaign, but when I select a different mod such as Blue Planet, alot is missing.  Not only is there no starfield, but there is also no nebula at all.  I would appreciate any insight anyone can give me.

Read this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/installingmods.html#multimod).

Ok, I was able to get the graphic enhancements and the stars to work right, but I still can't get any nebula.

The star table for lightspeed's nebulae is in the advanced effects VP file.  So if you are not using the advanced effects you won't have the LS nebulae.  Create a folder in the data folder of the mediaVPs, label the folder tables and put this star table in it.  This will let you use the nebulae without using the advanced effects.

Ugh, I'm pissed now.  I've tried that and once again I can still get the starfield, the planets, the suns, and the enhanced graphics.  But I STILL can't get the nebula.

Download this (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.234). Place the .vp to your MediaVPs folder.

Are there actually campaigns that require the 3.6.10 Beta MediaVPs? I can understand the 3.6.10 build requirement, but the MediaVPs... Well, if yes, I suppose you can extract the asteroids from the 3.6.8's and place them to appropriate subfolders under \freespace2\mediavps\data.

Nobody requires the 3.6.10s yet, I'm pretty sure.

Ahem.
You need:
- FreeSpace Open 3.6.10 (At least this build (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,55095.0.html); mediavps recommended)
Personally I'd interpret this so that What If requires a 3.6.10 build (at least that one).

The MediaVPs are recommended. Optional. Might help. But no mentioning of the 3.6.10 MediaVPs specifically.

I've done it and nothing evil happened. Wouldn't recommend the other way around (3.6.10 Betas with the 3.6.9 build), though.

I was at Youtube once and I saw the differences between the MediaVPs, Bobboau's and VA's beams. Out of curiosity, I know that the 3.6.10 has some of Bobboau's beams and I was wondering if I could use those in 3.6.9? I could play the 3.6.10 but there's too much slowdowns and 3.6.9 runs alot smoother.

And by that point in time it may be unnecessary to do so.

The 3.6.10 exe's have no problem with the 3.6.10 Beta's, but in being beta's, not everything is as it should be for optimal performance.

The LS Nebulae ARE in the beta's and _should_ be utilized in the main FS2 campaign mission (and potentially port as wll? Not sure what 3.0.4 has but I think it does. Oh, n/m, you already mentioned you had the Nebs there. My bad.). Any other missions that leverage the mediavp's for content however may not call to them and just default to the standard (though upgraded) retail-ish files.

Just because a mod or campaign may REQUIRE the mediavps (because it was made for SCP enhancements rather than standard retail) doesn't mean that it was updated to fully leverage all of the mediavp features. Up until now, for example, the multiplayer co-op FS2 campaign did not support non-retail backgrounds or nameplate texture replacement.

If having the right stars.tbl doesn't change the scenery in the missions, then the missions do not have the ";;FSO 3.#.#;;" tagged sections in the background bitmaps section that refers to loading them.

That being said, I'm pretty sure the 3.6.8 Zeta's with the 710 patches should be supported fully, so reliance on the 3.6.10 Beta's is unecessary and would only be detrimental at this point and if the LS Nebs are not displaying, they may not be being utilized or something mission wise is broken in terms of the mission backgrounds.

Bobboau's Beams are (also) available at FreeSpaceMods.net (Downloads -> Graphical Enhancements).

Any particular reason for that? They're the same ****ing cutscenes.
Guess some people are never happy... (http://fszmirror.com/files/fsport/FS1OGGcutscenepack.vp)  :sigh:

It's just that the separate cutscenes are quite easy to use. FS2 cutscenes go to \freespace2\data\movies and FS1 cutscenes to \freespace2\fsport\data\movies. And of course you should have either the oggs or the mves and you should be playing in OpenGL. Direct3D and avi are known to cause the cutscenes to not show up.
