Title: GOG.com Version Graphics Problem
Post by: dANGER boy on November 18, 2008, 09:34:05 am
So I'm using the GoodOldGames.com version of the games.  I can load and play both Freespace and Freespace 2 both fine.  However, when in Freespace, whenever I am not moving, the stars disappear.  So if I put my throttle to full but I never move the joystick, the stars disappear.  They only reappear as I move the joystick.  Anybody else had this problem?

Yup, have that problem in the original freespace. Can't remember if it was in FS2 as well. My FS1 version in retail CD. My solution was to simply play using FS_Open.

I prefer the original Freespace over Freespace Port.  Besides, it's always nice to take a walk down memory lane.

Well, you've got to do this hack:
Quote
1) Go to:
Start -> Run.

2) Type in "Regedit", and click OK

3) Go to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Volition -> Freespace2

4) Backup your Registry, just to be sure. Do this by clicking:
Registry -> Export Registry File.
(Export "All" if you want, if you're worried you'll screw up something somewhere else by accident. Otherwise just export the selected branch.)

5) Select:
Edit -> New -> DWORD Value

6) Rename the newly created value to "D3DTextureDivider"

7) Right-click on "D3DTextureDivider" and select "Modify"

8) In the window that comes up, set "Value Data" to "1" then click on Ok

9) Repeat steps 5 to 8 but this time rename the DWord to D3DUseLargeTextures.

And enable acceleration in launcher. For me it works!

I prefer the original Freespace over Freespace Port.
Me too. FSPort will never be FS1.

Much obliged. I shall add this to the Support FAQ thread.

As a side note, shiv_pl. Having flags in one's signature is not appreciated on these forums. Just wanted to point that out if you didn't know about it.

Sorry, didn't know about that, Lobo. I'm going to remove it.

But isn't this hack for Freespace 2?  I'm having problems with FS1, not FS2.

It works also for FreeSpace 1.

I solved it.  This should be posted in the troubleshooting sticky (or at least add a note to it).  I tried the solution here that is also found in the Troubleshoot FAQ but it didn't work.  However, adding the DWORD value D3DLineOffset with a value of 1 fixed the problem.  No more disappearing stars!

That one was already in the FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/fs1-technical.html#stars). I just didn't notice that Shiv hadn't actually posted the solution, just a related one.

I didn't know about that FAQ.  I was talking about the one in this forum, the sticky.  Oh well.  I'm so happy it works now.  Disappearing stars was really annoying and kind of disoriented me.

I didn't know about that FAQ.

It is the source of much wise. Everyone should read it. Preferrably twice.
