Title: Guardian Of Light DEMO campaign RELEASE
Post by: darkmaster on November 21, 2008, 10:25:20 am
Time to fly the extremely fast/strong/powerful Vorlon fighter.

This DEMO of the upcoming campaign Guardian Of Light (2 missions and 1 cutscene included) let you take the role of a Vorlon fighter to bring order and enlightenment all over the universe.

download link status : online
Here it is : http://www.etud.insa-toulouse.fr/~kmnguyen/GOLdemo.vp (http://www.etud.insa-toulouse.fr/~kmnguyen/GOLdemo.vp)

Note from writer :
Vorlons are sometime cryptic, so if you do not understand it is sure that you won't. Look for the directive command message instead.

Please give me your comments, questions, complains, feedbacks I am still learning how to FRED perfectly so any of your feedback will be very valuable for me.

Update : Cutscenes fixed.

Ok, played it ( didn't finished it though, got killed in mission 3, while i was making notes... ).

The scenario is quite interesting, i always liked the Vorlons.

here's what i found so far:

Spoiler:
The cutscene in mission one isn't running smooth, looks a bit jumpy.
Will play it again later to see if it's cutscene itself or my PC had a prob in that second.

Mission 2-the cutscene:

The jumpgate opens, and then the Vorlon fleet pops out of nowhere, that doesn't look good.
Try instead: The large ships jumps in with jumpeffect, the smaller ones without.
Place 'em closer to the big one, and bit towards the stern of the large ship.

Or just leave the scene as it is, and only move the fleet a bit backwards.

The effect is almost the same, and it would look like the fleet is jumping "in", not "in front" of the jomp portal.

That's it for now, have work on something else. I'll play it later again, and check the mission in FRED also.

Oh, btw. The "special-voice-appearance" of Kosh is really cool!!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your comments.

Spoiler:
For the cutscreen 1 yes it is like that, in fact it is just a leftover until I got the advanced function of set-camera-position to work, that time it will run smoothly.
For cutscene 2 I will move the fleet backwards a bit.
For mission 3 do not miss the SECRET.

SO, did anyone else play it ? If yes please give me a comment : bad, good, annoying, too long, too boring, too short, stupid, cannot understand ect... this will be very helpful for me in making the next missions.

Well I can`t find any complaints. If you keep doing this kind of a stuff then you will be a one hell of a FRED:er in my eyes.

cloneof is right!

But since you asked for input... :D
...here it is:

The first planet in Awakenings ( the one close to the sun ), isn't properly placed.
You should rotate it a bit, so that the Terminator fits lighting from the sun.

Other then that, no complaints.

Thanks you guys you made me all red..
Did any of you clear the bonus yet ? For now it has no meaning but bonus goals will be very important for the whole campaign.

Oh we haven't even started with you yet  ;7.

You show a great deal of promise. I've played this. I enjoyed it. This is much better than my first attempt at a campaign. Here's some hopefully constructive comments:

The good

* What a fab first effort.
* Your backgrounds are beautiful.
* Great concept for a campaign.
* Good atmosphere and nice Vorlonesque diologue.
* Cutscenes are a really nice touch.

The bad

* Nothing

Things that could be improved if I were to really nit pick

* The increased hitpoints of the younger race ships results in a bit of sitting shooting at stationary targets. Lower the enemy hitpoints a little and escort fighters to keep things lively?
* The plot is sometimes a little hard to follow. Add more diologue to convey what is happening?
* This instant death capship explosions are very, very, slightly annoying ;).

Thanks for putting this together!

I agree.

Balancing is a bit off (the hitpoints for example) but otherwise, very very promising. Keep it up.

EDIT: A personal question: What happened to your previous campaign concept?

Thank all of you I have noted all of the weak points and I will try to improve it and also make the rest better.

Spoiler:
For the plot I also feel that it is too obscure I will try to use the debriefing to clear up the plot. It is hard to not only make the player understand what is happening but also keep the Vorlons as cryptic as they are. Also those 2 missions have not revealed the plot yet, the first mission is just a normal "accident" to expedition forces that visit Vorlons'space and the second is for modifying a young race recently developped in a planet (where they meet the unlucky Vrees who spy the planet as they always did to Earth).
The increased hit point is a difficult matter, since if I decrease it then the fight is too easy, and Vrees do not use fighters  :blah:. But I will decrease it a bit though.

@Vid : They are more difficult and have more plot-holes than this one. U know my English is not too good so play around with the Vorlons is better since their English is not better than me  :D

The thing is that Vorlon fighter group was able to take down a Shadow ship (I wouldn't believe that their telepathit capapbilities can affect their hull statistics). Now it would feel a bit boring if oyu would spend 5 minutes taking down some Vree.

Very nice.  Of course from working with Vid I'm a little more picky when it comes to analysis.

Spoiler:
Mission 1:
-Firing on the caps should change the IFF to hostile too.
-I'd definitely agree the hitpoints are strange.  If you don't want to up them maybe some kind of explanation.  Maybe something like the Vorlon's weapons might not be up to full strength when they first wake up.
-Any reason you don't want the friendly wings displayed  in the upper right?  It's just a quick change in the mission specs.
-you can "cheat" by disabling a fighter in each enemy wing.   This makes the ship guardian look bad.  Might want to do a threshold.  Not to mention the let down of spending all that time lost spent getting those caps down to 1 to only find out you can't kill them.

Mission 2:
Having the guns on the Vree ship all guardianed the same isn't very convincing.  Mix it up a bit.

Is it just me or are the sound files too faint to here in mission?  Cutscenes and debriefing seem fine.

Spelling and grammar.  Hopefully it hasn't been spell checked since it's a demo.

 (:vorlon scream:) GOOD! (http://www.bestfreeicons.com/smimages/eed5af6add95a9a6f1252739b1ad8c24-Vorlon-Cruiser-icon.gif)

The only bad thing I can say: I agree that the voice at the end of mission 1 is too low.

no I dont feel judged I'm just taking note and will correct these things until u guys pros have no complains in this case it is sure that the players will really enjoy my campaign.
This campaign is expected to be done in 6 months so I still have a lot of time ahead  :D
Until then, I will need some of your helps in playtesting, grammar-correcting and also voice-acting.

Also, does anyone know how to make a piece of Vorlon voice with all the radio-noise like in the show ?

Hm, you could DL Audacity, load a Voice file of Kosh, play around with the values, 'till you can't hear the voice of Kosh anymore, only the sound of his "translator", save that file, copy it and use it as base for your own voice  acting.

I've done something similar for my BtRL mission, i used a file from the show, edited out the music in it, but the result wasn't the best, the voices have been to...Cylon-ish.
My skills in that direction are..."under-developed".
Since the Vorlons have this "electronical" voice it would work for you.

Option 2 would be, to test some of the plugins for Audacity, to "Vorlonify" your voice, and use a music maker software to imitate the music like sound you hear, everytime the Vorlons speak.

Here are the links:

Could that program be used to edit the sound of the computer`s fan from the audio? I have sometimes that problem, that some of the computers own "sounds" got in to the audio that I record.

Yes, you can play around with the values to edit out "background noises.

Hey can anyone show me how to make the friendly wings to show up in the upper right of the screen please ?  Very weird I tried to change everything in the mission specs editor and still no success. Does this is due to the way I named the wing ?

You need to change the custom wing names under mission specs to match your the player wing name and any others you want to show.

Custom Wing Names

The first line says which ones appear on the loadout screen, the second one which ones appear on the HUD and the third names the TvT multiplayer wings.
