Title: Wow, lotta people.
Post by: Braedan on November 22, 2008, 05:42:51 pm: Well, i used to play Freespace back in the day, and stopped because... well.. I'm not sure actually.
But i decided a couple days ago (after getting frustrated and bored with crappy new games) to come back to play some QUALITY old games, and Freespace was the first to come to mind.
I had heard about a decent size community still following freespace, but wow, I really didn't expect how large it was going to be! This is bigger than some NEW games.

So, Here i am, back into the fray. I'm Currently downloading/installing the Freespace Open Installer stuff, and i think I'm doing it right, but this place is kinda overwhelming. I have the original FS2 installed, and am getting "Full" with the FSO to get full advantage of all the pretties.

If I'm doing anything wrong, help would be appreciated, though this is mostly a post to say hi, and this looks like a place i could enjoy quite a lot.

Well, if you wanted to really take advantage of all the latest and greatest pretties of FreeSpace, you'd of course follow the instructions behind the "Make your FSO pretty" link in my signature. But it is good to keep in mind that those instructions involve the 3.6.10 Beta MediaVPs that are still, well, Beta and have slight issues. Just using the Installer will get you really far, though, so no need to worry about missing graphical pleasure.

Just never use "it is just a Game", or any variation of, to settle an argument. :nervous:

BTW Retsof. you forgot the FreeSpace Port. < The classic Descent: FreeSpace - The Great War campaign ressurected on the FS2 engine. And we are slowly counting down the days till we get Silent Threat: Reborn.

I think i was the first and foremost person to get pissed off when ppl told me Freespace was just a game-- as in Multiplayer i would get so worked and wound up and emotionally involved.

So, yeah, your dam right its not just a game.

It's actually rather off-putting rather than welcoming as it makes the original poster wonder why they'd want to hang around with a bunch of certified crazies instead of letting the gentle insanity of this place slowly become apparent as they get used to it. :p

So please. No more welcome speeches. Welcome the new person. Point them at FS2_Open and the TCs/mods if need be. Answer the questions they asked. But let's not try to hand out our own preconceptions about this place to new people. They should be allowed to form their own opinion.

That isn't what I was on about actually. It is just a game and if you're getting wound up about it then you probably do need to be reminded of that.

I was actually referring to the annoying habit some people used to have of entering a debate about Freespace (For instance a 3 page debate on Shivan tactics) to remind everyone "it's just a game" in an attempt to stop the on-going discussion.

If people want to discuss such matters that is their choice. They know it's a game but if getting a good handle on Shivan tactics is something they want to discuss I see no reason why it shouldn't be allowed as long as it's on topic for that thread. Personally I found such debates added a lot to my understanding of the game. Saying "It's just a game" added nothing to the thread.

Fortunately my threat to ban the next person who said it seems to have had the desired effect. :)

True, but we could still post a link to the thread with welecome speeches. We had some real jewels in there....altough a new member wouldn't get most of the puns :P

Seriously though I can't really see the point in saying "And this is how we used to welcome new people to the community 5 years ago before we realised it was getting bloody stupid" Why would anyone new to the community care?

We got rid of the welcome speech for a good reason. All this would be is an attempt to backdoor it in, making even less sense than ever since now we're simply shoehorning in a link to something many new people aren't ever going to care about let alone when they're brand new to the community and good mods and improved graphics are what they are after.

The strange desire to bring the welcome speech back in a variety of stupid ways shows what was basically wrong with it in the first place. It became more about the person giving it getting their jollys rather than having anything to do with the new member and what they wanted. When you actually have people counting how many people they've beamed or welcomed you know it's no longer about the original meaning. It had simply become the HLP equivalent of the "FIRST!" post that plagues so many boards with regularly updated content. Most of those boards eventually get sick of the entire first page of a discussion escalating from simple "First!" to "First Page!" and start threatening to ban anyone doing it.

The welcome speech is a thing of the past. Any newbie who actually cares about it enough to want to know what it was will have little trouble finding out about it. But specifically linking to it just cause it's what people used to do makes about as much sense as linking to 3.5.5 cause people used to do that too. :p

Indeed. It would be awkward if a group of us was sipping some fine brandy and one of us started a conversation, only to have some bozo run in and yell "First!!1" at our faces. Or alternatively if a new person arrived at our "bar" asking a question only to be forced to listen to long, illogical and downright weird speeches as a response. Not to mention having people throwing him with numerous glowsticks that have the phrase "Welcome to the HLPBB!" written on them. One glowstick would suffice.

Ya know what really gets me about that place too... the sponsor only forum, which is like the worst idea ever... of all time. They complain if you post off topic from the forum so like say if i were to mention anything about red vs blue in the sponsor forum, flame war. If i talk about my pet, flame war. So it leads me to wonder, what can you talk about in the sponsor forum? I don't think my 12 bucks are worth more than any of the other sponsor's 12 bucks... but RvB is funny as hell for pplz that havent seen it, you gotta check it out! just ignore the forums and such
