Title: Freespace Open on Netbooks + Questions?
Post by: bagman on November 29, 2008, 02:57:11 am
Hi, im thinking of getting this for my netbook.

The machine has a native resolution of 1024x600. I heard that this project allows for custom resolution in the game/menus, is that the case and will it allow 1024x600?
(even 800x600 ingame and in menus will suffice)

Also, the machine has limited specifications and almost certainly will not run all the advanced effects that this fsoinstaller program includes. Is there an option to turn off all these advanced effects and only gain the benefits from the new resolutions etc?

Will the FSOInstaller program work with Freespace 2 purchased from gog.com?

There was discussion about this very subject here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,57983.0.html). Hope that helps.

Just get the FSO engine and the new Launcher. The MediaVPs are responsible for any graphical improvements. If you feel like it, you can try to play with them, but indeed they might be too much for a netbook.

Yes.

thanks for the swift answers.

i assume when you say 'get the FSO engine and the new Launcher' you mean the executable installer from www.fsoinstaller.com ?

Correct. But then again, if you're only acquiring the FSO executables, you could also do it manually by downloading Launcher 5.5d (link in my signature) and a recent 3.6.10 build from the Recent Builds board (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html).

thanks again lobo.

ill stick with the executable installer and might try some of the lesser affects. by looking at the fsoinstaller.com website it seems there are 2 types of mediavp's and only one of which states that it needs a higher spec machine.

also i might get some of those mods like derelict and awakening etc. (i think awakening is mentioned on gog.com as being good)
(unless of course they really kill the system because they have high requirements aswell :/ )

There aren't actually several types of MediaVPs. The part on the Installer site refers to AdvancedEffects. It's a single vp (and in the case of the 3.6.8 MediaVPs also the patch vp for it) that included realliy high-res textures and such. With a netbook you should definitely skip it. The rest of the MediaVPs might work.

If you want to get Awakenings, you must also get FSPort since Awakenings requires it.

Mods in general have the same requirements as FS2/FSO. Depending, of course, on whether they require the MediaVPs or not.

- is it possible in the installer to just install the core vp's and possibly the high-def music ones?

- is fsport an option in the installer or do i have to get that somewhere else manually?

Haven't actually used the Installer myself, but I believe it separates them as the MediaVPs and the AdvEffects. AdvEffects are naturally the AdvEffects and the corresponding patch file, while the rest contain Core, Effects, Models and Textures. You'll have to download the whole set (minus the AdvEffects), but once you have them, you can experiment on the optimum between quality and performance by moving some MediaVPs away from \freespace2\mediavps\. You can, for example, start by having just Core in \freespace2\mediavps\.

FSPort is available through the Installer, but also manually.

just an update.

fsoinstaller was both painless and comprehensive. well done to the creator.

fs open is wonderful. for netbooks the addition of custom resolutions like 1024x600 is a real boon, plus it not only affects the flight engine but all the menu/hanger/briefing screens aswell. amazing. again kudos to the creators.

Freespace 2 works on an EEE PC?

i personally have a samsung nc10 netbook, which is equivalent to a eee pc 1000h.
so yes it works, and works extremely well, on netbooks.

i didnt download the advanced effects though. that might be asking too much.

im not very far into the game but i certainly havent encountered any major slowdown.

I can confirm it works on EeePC 900's. I have a white 900 12G XP, and native resolutions are automatically added.
