Title: BETA: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

Finally, it's here.

3 files:
FOW_COTS1 - contains maps, models, hud, effects, sounds
FOW_COTS2 - contains insignias, interface, cbanims, voice, music
FOW_COTCS_C - mission and table files

Extra- a few more loading screens

To save space FS1 music is not included (aside from 2-3 tracks), so I'd recommend getting it from FS post. Campaign should work without it tough.

NOTE TO CAMPAIGN MAKERS:
The campaign includes the very latest versions of all of my ships.
Minor tweaks to increase eye-candy and performance have bene done on nearly everything.

well, i'm trying to help, because i loved FOW:1 (felt like the FS2 equivelent of silent threat, in the respect that V made it.)

Oh..crapola... I put two version of the Nareos installation instead of Nareos AND Aeglos :P Silly me.

Ok, i got to mission 4, the one next to... jupiter?  :wtf:
And first off, the pirate fighters are very unbalanced. They all have the speed and manueverability of a perseus, and about the shield strength of a fenrises hull. They're uglies, they're supposed to break down all the time. They're supposed to equal less than the sum of their parts, and, above all, they're supposed to have super weak hulls to the the way they're constructed. Just saying.

Mission 1:

this one seemed ok, aside from the feeling of having to scramble over to the freighters to scan them before they warp out. (they don't, but it feels like they will if you don't hurry!)

Mission 2:

Ok, i COULD NOT beat this mission. Even on very easy, all my wingmen except speedy (and by the way, the campaign doesn't seem as character involved as the last. That was one of my favorite parts) died as soon as our force met the pirate escort fighters. And i had no TAG missles, just rockeyes and tempests (only 40 tempests in my bottom bank? :wtf:  the mymidon could carry like 160...) so i failed every time. after several frustrating minutes, i managed to get away from the fighters. Then got klled by the Leviathan as i tried to follow orders.

Next couple of times i tried, a few hercs survived, and killed the leviathan before it could be disarmed, so again, i failed, regardless of not tagging the freighters. And also, the kill all fighters bonus objective says 'mission objective text', or whatever it is if you don't edit it.

Mission 3:

Again, super overpowered enemy craft (the kulas seemed to have unlimited afterburner, and again, are impossible to hit) and i had to use ALL my missles to take out the tower. Then, i couldn't get a break long enough to rearm. And could there be a little longer of a delay, and another 'stand clear' message, before the blade fires it's beam at the door? i almost got fried there! I had some more complaints, can't remeber, except the wing of friendly bombers would not stop trying to eliminate all the asteroid bases turrets, and came very close to destroying it. down to 3% hp before the mission ended.

Mission 4:

All i did was park next to the nav bouy and turn on time compression. The mission plays itself until the kulas come. Are you supposed to stop everything? Because they came after  me, i destroyed them, then time compressed another 15minutes, nothing happened, i left, and there was no debriefing. uhm....

The mission 2 has some strange bug I can't track. You're supposed to start off with TAG-A's but you're not. The fighter can carry them (checked it twice) and upon checking in FRED, he does have them assigned as initial loadout (and the loadout is locked). Still, the weapon selection reverts to default on mission start.


I don't get it. I can try to use the change-weapon SEXP on mission start as a workaround, but this is honestly one bug I really don't get how it's even possible for it to happen. Research into this problem continues.


As for the rest:

mission 3 is supposed to be very hard.
The small number of missiles is no bug - all fighters have reduced missile capacity, but missiles are almost twice as strong as before. 2 of your wingman shouldn't die (they're guardianed), so I guess the event didn't trigger.


As for mission 4 - once you're told to stay put, don't move an inch till the enemy fighters go away.

One more thing - this campaign has a completley different balance than stock FS2. The AI is meaner for one thing. Enemy weapons do more damage. All in all, it's designed to be more difficult.
I'll wait a bit for a few more people to comment on the balance of the Kulas fighter. I'll nerf it if it's needed.

I'm playing and fixing errors as I go..

Couldn't do much testing tonight (RL stuff), but I already made a few smaller fixes.

I will upload a patch with fixes when I bundle up a few. Later tomorrow.

ok. should a retry the first 4 missions though?

Also, the story kindof feels... empty. It feels like you're just dumped into the missions. All the briefings are there, and theres plenty, but its like... they dont SAY anything... your just told to shoot this, then that, then this, and even then, the instructions are kinda sketchy...

that data loss hit me harder than I though. I found that a few things were outdated, lacking some minor tweaks, but critical tweaks all the same 8tweaks that could case problems).

OK, I uploaded a fix and a new COTS_C file.
I also decided not to pack the missions and tables into a VP - it's easier for people to edit them when they're more acessible. (consequently, you can delete the COTS_C.vp once you extract the new files)

Yeah, definately re-start the campaign.
I'm sorry for all this ca**, but this campaign has been plagued by trouble from day 2. If I had dedicated testers I wouldn't have even released a beta.

I was planning on adding a bit more chatter into the first several missions (the latter missions got more), but the development was pretty..chaotic. Any and all feedback is welecome Titan. If I can improve/fix something, I will.

So I played some of the later missions. So far:

A daunting task - worked fine

Grinder(my mission - some minor embarrassing typos by me still left in)

Just Shock - i got the feeling that my ship might be tagged invulnerable. Also the stations explosion didn't do enough(if any) damage to nearby ships. The Rapier  positions itself badly and sometimes beams the station by accident. I'm not sure how to fix that one

It's not suppoed to destroy nearby capital ships - they're a klick away to least. Taht would be one helluva explosion if it could do that.

Granted, I could have played with the spcialExp parameters to create a smaller , but more powerful, instead of a huge, but weaker explosion. I might change that.

also, still no tags. are you sure the falcon is allowed to have them in the table?

the balance semmed slightly improved. my wingmen lasted another 2 minutes before it was just me and speedy.

do you think, for the first few missions, you could add a small note that you will be flying as alpha 4, etc? especially with the scramble missions.  it was confusing, not knowing who you are.

You'll almost never flying be as n01 in this campaign...not until the end at least :P



About the TAG thing - I started a new campaign and it worked by me. Honestly, I've been experiencing some strange behavior with weapon loadouts - it's almsot like they're reverting to defaults sometimes wihtout any cause and reason.
I'm testing M8 right now and the loadout keeps reverting to default, even tough the weapon(s) are allowed for the fighter.

Maybe it's the build.

well, the only one that i already have that works is... C08062008. That's what i've been using. Ok, i played about 9 more missions, plus the first 4, and:

These were much better. only a few problems (excluding the grammar, which is slowly, but steadily, declining. IE, mistakes are getting slightly more common. )

The galaxy was missing another texture still, though the turrets work, the one that goes straight down the middle, the length of the ship.

Anyways, the biggest one is loadouts. I'm to the mission were you're in a bomber against the mothballed fleet, and i still only have rockeyes, tempests, HL-9s, ahketons, and prommy Ss. No bombs, nor reaper, nothing.

Also, in a lot of the briefings, the icons are messed up. erm, well, the ships that the show when you click them are messed up. particularily in mission... 3.

And another bug with that mission, heres one i forgot earlier, when you're inside the asteroid... uhm, the rock parts of the wall are invisible. So i can see out through everything except the structures. and i have the VP that i have, with working ship models, renamed to FOW1 and in with the other VPs. I KNOW that model should work.

Also, the Kulas, i noticed in mission 4, has a cruising speed of 87MPS? it's a light fighter, not an interceptor. They're supposed to have medium speed, good manueverability, but the main reason people would have them is that they're crappy enough to be legal. I know that the pirates probably modifed them, but...

and a small personal note of the uglies, it doesn't really make sense to have groups of the EXACT same design. If i could, i would have them all be completely different combinations, to make it more realistic. But, thats not possible from a game standpoint.

Also, all the ships except the perserverance had their default nameplates, IE, GTD Orion and stuff like that.

And the squad logos didn't show up.

And in one mission, the one were you return to the perserverance after  the andropov was destroyed (i think that was the on) Theres a command brief that says <text here> and thats it.

again, i'm pretty sure i forgot some. But, those are


EDIT: Oh, found one more, in the first mission, my perseus seems to be using the stock textures, they're REALLY bad resolution.

The nameplate things is REALLY strange. I'm using the mediavp's (no models or textures for the ship are extracted) and I can't assign nameplates to them. It's like some completely different model is there (no nameplate in FRED under texture replace at all)

I actually had to extract both the Deimos and the Aeolus + all of their maps before the nameplate appeared in FRED. Weird, weird, weird.

the laodouts in the bombing mission work fine here. I'm using one of the latest nightly builds.

As for the Kulas, the top speed is 70m/s. The AI must be diverting power to engines.

I got rehersals in 15 minutes, but I'll look everything over and update the files when I return. Expect and update (Fix and COTS_C) within a few hours.

... and i just realized i have been playtesting on very easy, because i attempted to beat the second mission on that the other day, before you updated it.

What build are you using? That way there'll be less of a chance that i catch something you can't fix. just, for the final release, have a note on a reccomended build.  :)

EDIT: You know, i'm probably dead now, i'm supposed to be mission testing for TotT  :nervous:

EDIT2: Could you also maybe add a couple CBs about any new ships and weapons you'll use?

Just finished playing it. I am getting pretty much all the bugs that were mentioned before and one of the gtva fighter models do not appear in the radar at all, or on the screen at very long distances. Also, I can only get it to run on 3.6.10 builds, any 3.6.9 builds do not work. Dont know whether or not that is intentional.

I'm using the fs2_open_3_6_10r-20081124_r4960 build.

I think I tracked down and fixed nearly everything listed....except the loadout thing. The reaper  cannon is the default weapon for the Thunderbolt - in fact, it's the ONLY weapon it can mount on the first bank.

I'm gonna do some more checking and then upload a fix in one hour.

Ok,  I updated the Fix.rar and COTCS_C.rar

Download both files. You will probably need to re-start the campaign for all changes to have effect.

B.t.w - the missing insignia was again a product of a type. Player folder instead of players. The fix should take care of that.

NOTE - the fixes are for the first 11 missions.. I've yet to actually test and fix the later ones (again), but they should work.

Ok, i can NOT get the first of the darkwolves missions to work with ANY builds. The command briefing works, then when i get to the regular briefing, the game locks up halfway through the text's scroll. It sits for a minute, then gives me the 'unfortunetly, freespace scp *build crap* Has encountered a problem and needs to close.' send or don't send message.

FIX IT PLEASE, I WANNA PLAY! *lunatic*

Minor bug ... whatever texture the copernicus uses on its engines is either misnamed in the POF or does not exist.

Allrighty.
I'm fixing and improving everything I can and testing it myself. I have done nothing else the whole day :P

I also further made minor tweaks to various ships and stations (better mapping work with normals and shines, more optimized texture usage), new interface art, cbanis' and some other things....so I'm pretty close to re-updating EVERYTHING.


B.t.w. - I sometimes get that same crash on Mission05a, during text scrolling on the briefing. I just start the game again and it works.

Just be patient for a day or two and hopefully the next update could very well be the final one (assuming I don't want to add more easter eggs or crap). It might even include a HTL Sizifus freighter. (If I can finish it in between all the bugsqashing)


That would be the thrustercone texture. It's in there, but for some reason sometimes FS2 doesn't display it.

i've tried it about 7 times though, with a number of different builds. It worked once, then crashed about 2 seconds after the mission's start.

EDIT: Ok, i tried, tried, and tried, it doesn't work. at all.

I even thrown in a 3-mission bonus mini-campaign..sorta :P

Allright, the big overhaul is done.

Pretty much all the models are optimized, new maps and stuff added, so I'm re-uploading all 3 files now. And I decided not to stuck them in a VP - easy access to all the files. All the ships should now look and perform better, especially the vasudan ones. There will be no more updates of COTS1 and COTS2 files, so consider them the final versions.

I like to remind you folks that this download (COTS1) contains the latest, most up-to-date version of all my stuff. And I pretty much tweaked everything.
COTS1 is a tad bigger now since I added some maps (and the extracted files for the Deimos and Aeolus from media VP's, since having them un-extracted caused some strange problems with them)

This current version could very well be the end of Beta and a formal release. As soon as one of you guys has a run trough and confirms no more major (fixable) bugs are present.

Now all that's left to do is wait for the files to upload and verirfy...

DONE.

ok, everything seems to be working find (save rather odd ship changes in the briefingless missions) but the missions with the pegasus are BORKED. can't explain it. when i get back to alderberan, it says alpha 1 and 2 are dead, but i'm still there. i can't DO anything save target, then when i try to warp out, my speed remains 0. i cheat to kill my self, and the death view zooms out to infinity, and i had to force exit.

b.t.w - updated. This should finally fix all the errors that have been found so far by anyone.

I'm gonna move this up now to an official release (alltough I would so love to have some better backgrounds for some missions)

I also added a Extra.rar with a few loading screens that I forgot to pack.

Mission fow_c3_m3a  beta wing has no primary weapons.  You have thunderstorms as the load out in the mission but these are not allowable by the ship's table.

 In Mission fow_c3_m3b I'm getting a series of parsing errors when  start the mission.  They appear to have something to do with the variable in some of the events and arrival cues.  It affects the following events Detected, Hubble goes 1, Wait 1 and Wait 2.  It affects the arrival cues for Dagger and Rapier.  For some reason it does not like the 0 in @piratedetect[0].  I'm testing with the current nightly build.  Also the Herc 3's don't show up in the target view only the glow points.

Odd...looks like you're missing the texture for the herc. Lemme check.

EDIT: I checked. There is one texture mission Hc01B (which is the same as 01A by the way) so LOD 2 appears transparent.

I'll upload a new Herc3 model. Here you go, just replace it with the other one (this one uses 01A texture on all lods)

As far as the parsing errors go, I use a single variable there (which is mission-persistant IIRC) and everything worked fine on my end.


EDIT2: I just updated the COTS_C.rar file. It should fixed the issue with the guns in mission03a as well as add message sounds for all messages.

I was serious... your name wont' show up just yet...for some reason not all show-subtitle event trigger during the intro.. I have to expand the credits list anyway, so I'll look into that in the next patch ;)

Yeah, this last version should fix ALL bugs you reported. Meaning it should be normally playable.
Emphasis on the "should" part :P
You'll probably need to re-start it.

ATM  I got no plans to continue anything.

DOTA is big in scope and in number of ships (even tough I already have most of them), so making it would be quite a task. We'll see I guess. I don't like the idea of leaving the story unfinished....

and DOTA isnt' really chapter2 ... its would be Chapter3, part2 (with COTS beign Chapter3, part1)

If you want to know what chapter 2 was supposed to be all about, read the intel in the Tech Room.

can't be...the file is in there. Check your COTS/Data/models folder ...could be it didn't download properly.

Or it could be there's a typo in the tables (which would be strange cause there isn't one in mine).
Check the ships.tbl in Data/tables and make sure the .pof name written there matches the model.

Played your previos FOW and loved them now im looking forward for this one.

also will you be dooing as i have read the second chapter or this 3'rd installment of FOW ??

anyway nice to hear some of your famous uber ships managed to get into this one as well. Ive been dreading and hoping i would get a chance to se the Archangel battleship in one of your mod's in action !

In mission fow_c3_m4 the thunderbolts only have rockeyes loaded and there are no cyclops torpedoes available.  In the load out you have Cyclops#short but only the cyclops is a starting weapon in the campaign.  You should either change the load out for the mission or the starting weapons for the campaign.

so when is the DOTA campaign coming out ??? Before new years eve or after ??? You yourself said you could make at least 1 missiona day if you wanted  and you said some of the stuff is already made. So that should put you in for new year if you work really hard dont sleep or go out have a private life.

So in al fairness is sounds good to me if that means i get to play around with some new awesome ships :D

J/K TMan. Im looking forward to finishing up another campaign before i complete yours(just a few more missions to go ). Love your mod's just because they are on the same page as what i have in my mind but cant actualy make them ! :D 

So thanx for the great mo's ships the works :D

P.S. - you were actualy the only one that got the Orion HD Mk II the way i wanted it  and even made a battleship :D :P

The thunderbolt uses the default loadout which is the cyclops#short so it will default to the rockeye even if the cyclops is present.  The solution is to set the loadout to the cyclops for beta and gamma wing ships or add the cyclops#short to the starting loadout in the campaign file.

I'm also having problems with mission fow_c3_m4RR.  The event for the escape pods will not go true.  The event is for all the escape pods departed or destroyed but only a part of the escape pods arrive from the previous mission so it keeps waiting for the pods that were destroyed in the previous mission.

That should be fixed in my update. It's caused by ships missing a Red Alert Carry Status flag.

ok i think i have an idea what the problem is, when a mission is loading is there suppose to be just a screen with the GTVA logo in the background with the loading bar infront?
Edit: Forget the above, is it possible that it may have something to do with the way FreeSpace is reading the FRED file.

Fixed it. Open up the mission in fred and uncheck red alert status.

Since the Beta is over we could move this to the release thread. Less clutter.

Just FYI - for any problems with red-alert missions - they will require a re-start of the campaign if you started playing with an older version of hte campaign files.

If the problem still persists, I know of another way to fix it.

The wing name changes between fow_c3_9RR and fow_c3_10.   You go from Gamma wing to Alpha wing.  I played through after the last Update and the problem persisted with you not being there in mission 10.  Change the red alert in mission 9RR to key off Gamma 2 and change it to Gamma 1.  Change the wing name in mission 10 to Gamma.  This shpuld fix the problem.
