WAAH!:(
And this was the week I was gonna upload all the cool stuff I've been makin' all these months... which is, naturally, quite likely to be doomed to go down with my hard drive, my papers, and Ray Dream itself...:(
-
Oh yeah... don't try emailing me, anyone. I don't know how vicious this thing is, but it seems to be hitting everyone around...
...and I'm fairly sure other comps will fare even worse than mine has.
-
Dammit... :no::(
Best of luck dude, hope it clears up soon. :o
-
Indeed, bad luck to be sure :(
Here's hoping that you can get the important stuff backed up.
-
What is/was it?
-
Damned if I know. Some worm- ****ed up the desktop, and now there's hearsay I might have to get rid of the hard drives to get rid of the virus. Luckily enough, there are 5 of them, so the damage might not be total... Was plain luck I stored a copy for identification- NEVER let family share a computer for email accounts.

Hack3r Bulletin Board (http://www.hack3rs.com)
Tell them what went wrong and they'll probably be able to tell you what did it.
McAfee.com (http://www.mcafee.com)
Their virus list will have instructions for removal of the virus once the Hack3r people have told you what it is.

...and people wonder why I like Windows XP (and NT in general) so much.
Although now with Windows XP Home Edition it won't take long for the virus guys to start making viruses for that now. Just another reason why I'm not comfortable with M$' introduction of the NT platform into the consumer market although if it gets them off Win9x then its not all bad.

You do realise there is supposedly a huge security hole in XP (solely Microsofts fault).

The UPnP one? Unless you subscribe to Steve Gibsons brand of bull**** (and being a self-labelled "hacker" it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you did) its been fixed already.
-
This the same one you mentioned in your privvie message..?

That seems a little hostile. Anyway, I don't know **** about the XP hole, I just heard from some very reliable people that it's pretty bad.
Edit: Wait a minute,
(and being a self-labelled "hacker" it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you did) its been fixed already.
Me? When? And why do you presume to put 'hacker' in speech marks?

Actually, all Microsoft OSes made in the past few years have come with built-in backdoors for NSA use. Microsoft has admitted to this, and it doesn't seem that it takes a particularly clever hacker to use the backdoor, either.
-
I heard it's an email virus with the title "an internet flower for you" and there was another one too...but I forget what it was. Just don't open them and delete them an you'll be OK. (I think)
-
I have this weird virus. It's a VBS file, and infects almost every JPG and MP3 file on my HD.

The way you describe them makes them almost sound like affiliates. :D

That's the one I had a few months back - easy enough to get rid of but a realy annoying bug (considering what it does... which is wipe out lots of data very quickly).
-
Hmmm. That explains alot. Recently my MP3's and JPG's have been copying themselves to the Recycle Bin and I noticed some strange things while MP3's were loading in WinAmp (although I think that's due to WildTangents spyware in their plugins).
The strange thing is that when the files are moved to the Recycle Bin they are actually just copied and the originals are left alone. Very, very strange.

I presume it's because 90%+ of hackers are really just little kids copying other people...they don;t really have a clue what the hell they're doing, just copying what a few others have done before them.

Yeah, 5|<|Z1p7 |<1dd135. That's what I thought he meant.
Hmmm.

The "clueless" bit would apply in this case. The virus was disguised as a 100kb batch file, attached to an email in which it was described as an image. I hardly even looked at it before trashing it, but unfortunately some family members were even more clueless than the kidscripter.
