"There are more things in heaven and earth (Horatio), then are dreamt of in your philosophy" ~Hamlet: AI SV
I just read this part in Hamlet the other day. Caught my attention for sure! I always thought this quote stuck out oddly in Petrarch's monologue, since it wasn't well integrated and it pointed to an otherwise unmentioned audience, but now that I understand the context of the original quote, I see it was a cool thing to do.
Are there any other Shakespeare references in Freespace 2? Names, situations, or other allusions?
-
Fortunately not, I hope. :p
-
Well... Two cruisers might be named after the two brothers in the Scottish Play I think. The Melchom (Malcolm) and the Bane (Donalbain). They appear alongside each other, so it could be possible it drew inspiration from the Scottish Play.
-
I liked how they used that quote - it was very well done.
Also - It's Macbeth! My only superstition is against having superstitions.

Aaah! "Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends." Aaah-haa!

Hey, didn't we used to have a stickied thread here where people tried to do this stuff for the entire campaign? I think I'd like to try and restart that.
-
Singh started one. I don't think he got very far though. What he had was in depth but he only covered the first 3-4 missions IIRC.
-
Do you have a link to it? I'll see what he has and see if I can start something up like that on my own.
Actually, if anyone wants to help, we can divide up the campaign and go through it.
-
:bump:
Where's that thread by Singh? I remember it, but I don't remember its title.

Yeah...I remember that it was short and covered stuff like a RL ship whose name was Impervious (the NTC Impervious might have been inspired by it).

I've deleted two completely off-topic posts spurred on by yet another misuse of that goddamn necrothreadage beam. I'm seriously considering recommending to the greater powers that be that anyone using that beam inappropriately receive a swift ban; at the very least, I'd love to see it banished to the pits of hell from whence it came.
Now, much more on-topic, I remember that thread too, but I also couldn't remember its name. Thankfully, the search function managed to be useful for once, and I stumbled across these two (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35225.0.html) threads (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35521.0.html) that I think fit the description.
-
Sheesh. It's from DECEMBER. Not a necro. If it's more than 18 months then yes, it's a necro. Tone it down, guys.
Mongoose, thanks for the links and for contributing to the thread.
-
Thanks for the links! If I get some free time, I'll try and analyze some more missions, but until then, I'll leave those threads where they are.
-
This is kinda unrelated, but I just remembered something. Shakespeare was famous for writing dozens (hundreds?) of sonnets, and in literature, they classify sonnets based on the rhyme scheme. There's three major types: Shakespearean, Spenserian, and... Petrarchan, named after Francesco Petrarch.
It's kind of a vague connection, so I'm guessing that's more a coincidence than anything, but it's still pretty neat.
(yay for 10th grade Brit Lit)

I've read somewhere that the first letters of the last 13 lines of the original version (never read it in English) of Hamlet read together is a statement "I am gay" - or sg with the same meaning. Is that true?

Freespace 3: Shakesphers revenge

Shakesphere?

Shakesphere?
I sense an idea for a new superweapon coming on.

Planet-quake weapon?

Christ there is so much bollocks talked in this forum, desperate attempts to be funny from people who quite clearly aren't.

Here are the two threads in which Singh did reserach into "Fs2's vast depths"

Sorry for the silly question, but what does the "v" stand for in NTCv?
-
Capital "C" usually stands for "Cruiser", but "Cv" stands for Corvette. Other conventions are "Fr" for freighter, and (non-canonically) "Fg" for frigate.
Calling it a GTC Deimos would be an insult to the ship.

Thx

You're just afraid of the Shakesphere. :p
