Title: Troubles with Stars and new MediaVPS
Post by: Admiral Nelson on December 13, 2008, 06:58:28 pm
Some the stars needed to complete the FSPort missions were left out of the released MediaVPs.  I have tried creating another -str.tbm to add these in, but I do not seem to have any luck getting them to take unless I use a full stars.tbl file.  Any ideas why this might be?  I also seem to be having hit or miss results with M87's coronae, even though I don't see that they are any different from those he made before, only that the released MediaVPs use DDS and his originals use TGA.  I don;t suppose an FSU insider can help me out with what I am missing here?  Betelgeuse and Antares are good examples.

The missing stars and coronae: Click (http://fsport.hard-light.net/wip/FSPort31MissionsMusic/effects.zip).
The stars.tbl I am using to get these to work: Click (http://fsport.hard-light.net/wip/FSPort31MissionsMusic/stars.tbl).

Yeah, we became aware of that,. Thanks for the tbl, I can complete the missing values.

Some of the files in effects actually do exist already, but there were a few that did get missed (SunAlphaAquilae, SunAlphaCentauriA/B and SunSol, SunTaniaAustralisA/B)

That's great.  Please let me know if there is anything else missing. :)

Incidentially, what is the correct command line to convert these TGA star files to DDS that work properly?

Sure.. but do you want a single patch in short time or dozen or so immediately?

I have no idea, Herra would know, I just do it manually in photoshop.

I don't suppose the lack of these stars cause random crashes?  :wtf: It would explain why I can't get FSPort to run properly.

You will likely want to use

> nvdxt -file filename.tga -nmips 1 -u888

...which will result in uncompressed DDS file (the stars are one of the things where quality matters far more than memory consumption, at least in my opinion) with just the main layer and no mip maps.

Thanks, Lassi.

@ Narvi, these stars are not used in the released FSPort and therefore cannot be causing your crashes.

If you don't mind, please add a better starfield.pof map to the patch. :)

We do mind. As there is nothing wrong or different with the pof. It is starfield0001.dds that changed.

Any why do you want the crappy DXT compressed version any way? This one actually has spectral color to the stars in the background, no blocky DXT compression squaring things away and has a tighter density of filled field of view.

And if you don't believe me, I can provide a side by side screenshot from photoshop to prove it.

Even with the emphasis on map, I still don't think it is going to happen. (And that texture does have a name. May not be bingo, but I think the correction (however it may have occurred by my misreading) is still understandable.)

Would you care to explain why you think it needs to be different?

Simple. It's not a step ahead, it's more a regression. Having colored stars turned out to be a realistic choice, but the low prominence of all stars makes the new starfield map similar to Retail backgrounds with a n. os stars of 200 or below.

The old map was greatly superior especially when combined with nebulae backgrounds. That doesn't happen anymore.

A matter of opinion. Ours differs and so far your bandwagon includes only you so far unless I am missing something. And as you already have your own topic, how about we stop hijacking this gentlemans topic.

For now I have converted Matt's stars using the command Herra listed above and will include them with today's campaign releases.  I'll rerelease later with the extra stars and coronae files deleted.

EDIT: Sorry for the thread jacking, I moved the reply about starfield texture here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58338.msg1177837.html#msg117787), so let's continue that discussion there and keep this thread for the sun bitmaps and stuff.
