One thing I've been thinking about lately which might prove to be nice:
A minicampaign during the freespace 1 era with the deployment of the first sobek (modified with FS1 armaments) with obviously orders to protect it.
what do people think of this?

Well, why not? The Tech description certainly allows it.

I was thinking about a storyline regarding this: since the sobek only started to see action after the destruction of vasuda, then the peak of it's carrier would be during the "OMEGA" operations, in which those vasudans scientists were rescued.
Also, in order to still be produced, this vessel will no doubt have to have a blazing carrier.
Also, since the corvette class was not yet introduced, designation would be PVE sobek, right?
Unless the sobek was used in raids against the HOL? :nervous:

Design of the corvette class GVCv Sobek began in the dark days after the destruction of Vasuda Prime by the Shivans in the Great War. The Vasudan navy wanted a vessel that could single-handedly counter powerful Shivan cruisers and provide critical support to Vasudan destroyers in battles against Shivan capital ships. The Sobek class fills those requirements admirably. Bristling with almost two dozen turrets, these corvettes are a terror to all vessels of cruiser size and below, while presenting a dire threat even to ships far larger than themselves.
I'd say it was mostly used against Liliths and as fire support against Demons. :P

I would like to see the sobek end it's career in a blaze of glory. Just the thing to convince vasudans that more sobeks are needed.
Perhaps in a desperate mission at the end will the sobek go martyr and ram a demon, to permit ally assets to prevail...

I think you're reading into the description too litterally. While it certainly wouldn't directly contradict what's there to have the Sobek in action against remaining Great War Shivan forces it does say that it 'began' it's design in the days after Vasuda's destruction. I'd also interpret 'days' in a more metaphorical sense. Directly after Vasuda's destruction and even up to the end of the war there wouldn't have been much, if any in the way of new designs. You concentrate on building what you know works.
Also, it's design and testing would most likely take years and I'd put money on the Sobek class being designed around beam cannon's considering the seemingly inherent problems with integrating beams into pre-Great War designs.
Plus, while making a good story, once billions/trillions have been pumped into actually designing a ship it's genenrally not necessary for the class namesake to have a glorious and noble self-sacrificed end to ensure that the design is used to build countless others. It just needs to work resonably well.
Look at the Aten. That didn't even do that and still got churned out.
Edit: But I suppose for the sake of story you could have the very early testbed 'Sobek' design, armed with minimal defenses as it's still in it's engine testing phase, soak up a load of bomber attacks for a science/civilian outpost/colony before having no choice but to ram a capship, as starlord suggested.
Wasn't the Eva the only Daemon with the Shivan fleet? A cruiser seems a small ramming target alright though.

Also, those 2 demons are perhaps the only 2 demons we get to SEE in freespace 1. That doesn't necessarily mean... :shaking:

Officially, there are no Demon-class destroyers in Antares.
