The single best sci-fi series ever to have been conceived somehow managed to end on a perfect note.
I just saw the finale on Sci-Fi Channel. Wangs battle cry. Vansen staying with Damphousse. Mcqueen getting caught in the explosion.
The only thing wrong with it was that they eliminated any chance of a second series, but with an ending like that, who cares.
The series deserves faaaaar more recognition than it will ever get. It was war and sci-fi blended perfectly into a cinematic masterpiece. Screw The Thin Red Line and Full Metal Jacket, this is better.
If you've never watched Space Above and Beyond, you should.....nay you MUST. Even if you have to sell your children to buy low quality pirated tapes, it's worth it.
-
As soon as I can put a hand on it, i'll vote :)
-
I already sold my children to pay for that Barca-Lounger.

WHAT? The best sci-fi show ever?
It had the most stupid setup ever! Who in their right minds would send their expensively-trained pilots to fight as grunts. The Fleet does the flying, the Infantry does the dying!
-
ther series has been on 38 times that i have known about here and all three times i mananged to some how miss the finale its the only epsidoe i haven't seen =(

Firstly, the 58th were an all-purpose marine squad.
Secondly:
Blasphemer!!!

I haven't even heard of the series.

I ditto that

Thin Red Line was the worst war movie of all times. Watching Barney the dinosaur is better.

The Barney movie sucked... worse than that?

I've only ever seen a couple of eps of S:AAB. It started screening at 3AM so I gave up on it.

yeah, Space Above and beyond is cool. They've made many of their ships for starlancer actually, enough to make a TC (save the capships). Bah, it ended like this coz it got cancelled I suppose... SCi-Fi series are always cancelled, save for one that I won't name, for that name I hate it above and beyond all names :p
go frying pans and pointy ears in pyjamas!!!! wuzzaaaaa!!!!!
Yup, S:AAB was cool, ships were gorgeous in this show.

Full Metal Jacket rules!

Yeah, all purpose - which means useless, because they can't do anything right. Sure, from a story perspective, it sounds like it might work, but if you think about it, it's stupid.

well, in the series, they can do everything right, so there :p
-
I remember this series fondly. I was really disappointed when it got canceled. McQueen got caught in an explosion? I don't remember that. But I remember the rest, mostly.
And Shrike, there are Marine pilot squadrons in the good ol' US of A. These guys have to go to boot camp, the same as the rest of the grunts. Hell, even the Marine JAG lawyers have to go to boot camp! So why is a Marine grunt/pilot dual purpose squadron so hard to believe?
and venom, which sci-fi series that did NOT get cancelled is the one you hate so much?
*braces for venom's reply of "Star Trek"*

Boot camp is very different from being a pilot AND being a grunt. Boot is basic training, every Marine is taught to fight. But you don't see the Marine pilots in their blackhawks and harriers and ospreys going and storming the beaches next week. You have a role, be in pilot, grunt, armor crewman or whatever and you stay there.

That's funny coz Luke Skywalker does the same (banzai I do a bombing run on a Detah Star! taliho I do a strike against a ground based shield generator!), but nobody will criticize in coz it's SW :p

But Luke was a Jedi!
* everyone goes "oooohhhh" *
:D :p

Right, for the record S:AAB rocked, ruled, 0wned and was great at a side angle. I loved it to bits, and that final episode was shockingly bold (unless they'd already scrapped a second season) and just generally really, really good. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time Vansen and Phouse were out in that gunship, and that thing with the exploding ambassador was the best trick I ever did see on the part of the enemy.
Also good: Pearly, and that one where Hawk goes commando-ing with that other dude.
Summary - S:AAB = the Bollox. Thank you.
-
It was a good show indeed, if a tad unrealistic. But that's expected in all sci-fi. A worse example of military organization would be star trek, where it's not pilots that do the grunt work - it's the commanding officers. :p

And what the hell did Leia do on Endor? She's nothing, she's a princess damnit! Nobody knew she was vader's daughter etc etc. What's more ridiculous, a pilot/marine, or a princess/marine/ ewoks Bride :p ?
-
You realize that was sarcasm, right? :D :p

Venom seems to be under the mistaken impression that Star Wars is supposed to depict a modern military force.

mmh, you're one to talk :p
You can say what you want, nobody could be able to explain what the hell did Leia there :p
-
Hey, the Rebel Alliance isn't exactly a proper military force. As compared to the guys in S:AAB, which are supposed to be in a near-future extension of the US armed forces.

And that's what speaks so well for the empire... defeated by a bunch of puny rebels that use princesses and teddy bears as infantry... :D :p

Leia is force capable....Anakin wasnt trained in the force yet had lightning reflexes..

so that's not the reason why they took her on Endor.
There's no reason in fact, it's ridiculous :p

S:AAB was one of those where you loved or hated it.
Unfortunately, I came out on the side of hate. Except a few times where it did get cool. But unfortunately most of what I saw seemed to consist of pretty bad writing. How many times did we go to seemingly the same dreary world where the enemy would keep shooting and we'd keep shooting too and.....damn that was boring!
Now I missed a good deal of the rest of it and it seems like they got their act together. I saw the Chiggy Von whatever (AKA Red Baron) and that was definately a cool episode...and so was the one with the Black Hole.....darn cool. But some of the others were bad.
So I see the appeal, I see the appeal for a MOD for FS2 even more....but if its all the same to you guys...Babylon 5 totally outpaced everything else before or since.
And Andromeda......lets not speak of that....its definately the show that has a great concept and shoddy writing and consistancy.
-
well, I compare Space above and beyond to Stargate, the begining is quite bad, but it gets better after the first half.
