My computer was running happily until my bro and I smelled magic blue smoke. Then the power cut, right in the middle of one of my posts. ;)
And guess what? The PSU on my little P3's died. I'm on another machine right now, but I won't be around much till I find another PSU for my box. Maybe tomorrow, maybe later, doubt earlier. Just thought you guys might want to know...

Ouch, you can get cheap comp stuff here www.pcliquidator.com :)
-
that is a bad thing :(
-
Damn that sux
-
Hopefully I'll be able to pick up a unit from the Sunday markets, stick it in, and be back up and running in no time.
Unfortunately those DA forum graphics are going to have to wait a little, untouchable. :)

fire and sensitive electronics are a bad combination
smoke is usualy a bad sign
-
Sorry to hear that. :( Did it just burn up or something?
-
To tell you the truth, I'm kinda stumped. It's not like it was a hot day, and there were no flammable materials about; maybe it was dust in the fan or something. The computer and all its components are no older than 2 years, maybe give or take a couple of months. Oh well...

mmh my comp "smokes", it's a good sign: I know there won't be any dust left the day after

I know someone who overclocked his processer from 900 mhz to 1.7ghz  He used liquid nitrogen to cool it. He got it up to 2.3 before his processor exploded. He showed it to me... literally shattered. :eek2:

You know, silicon is actually quite explosive when exposed to high electrical currents- I make a point out of keeping my tower off the desk.:D

I was just reading up on the new Geforce4 card, it has unbelievable stats.
The thing that bothers me though is that I know that someone is going to try to overclock that monster GFX card as soon as they install it even though there aren't really any games about that will push it in any way. 'Just because they can...'

hmmm, if it makes you feel any better Steak,

My processor has been running a bit hotter than usual recently at around 130°F, whereas it used to be around 121° or so. The Geforce3 inside is clocked significantly higher than usual (250/575mhz), but it used to run a bit cooler and I was wondering what was going on; when I opened the case up I noticed that everything was covered with thick layers of dust! :p I don't know how the computer managed to even operate correctly (maybe because there are 10 fans :D), since the intake fans were completely covered in dust and very little air was actually flowing inside. At the moment most of the dust is still in there since trying to remove all of it manually would take forever, but I am looking for one of those small PC vacuum cleaners for this type of thing. Hopefully I will be able to do it sometime this weekend. :)

You know, I am exactly the kind of person who does that sort of thing. :D
He used liquid nitrogen to cool it.
They should use that stuff more often in the high-end commercially available computers. It is frequently used in nuclear fission reactors to keep temperatures down and would work great in PCs. :)

Problem fix0red. It was a very simple job; out with the old, in with the new, plug in lots of stuff, cut your arm on hot metal... run-of-the-mill sort of stuff. ;)
-
heh..
ever get a shock off your video card?
-
ever wear socks and rub your feet on the carpet then touch your mother board? :D
-
No and no... :p :D

I was taking my old VooDoo out the other day so I could put my Radeon in, touched the thing and somehow got a big blue bolt to shoot out from the heat sink....

You reckon. The day I was fixing the unit it was 38 degrees C. Nasty.

I had once 220V trough my hand, not a good feeling toasted half my hand and my hair was like frankenstein style...no burns left from it:)
-
I had something like that happen to me once...just plugged in the CPU, a crackle, then smoke comes out of the PSU...
Guess I should have made sure the power supply was actually "off"
-
Ohh jeez, the stories of dust in the box, mine is about two years old, and you can count the dust layers like sediment... ;)

In the Navy, we were taught that before you work with a circuit, you deenergize the circuit (duh) and 'tag it out'. Tagging it involved putting a nonconductive dumdum in the circuit box in place of the normal pass-thru shunt. A red tag hung from the dumdum to let everyone else know that it was there for a reason.
One day, during a cutover from the offbase mains feed to an on base diesel generator, one of the electricians mates forgot to tag out one of the 440/3-phase circuits. When he went to transfer the mains from the outside line, he learned, involuntarily, how to fly. I think he would have flown farther, but the maintenance spaces we were in were only twelve feet across. The medical corpsman zapped him with the defibrillator to reset his heart rhythm and he survived.
I have a healthy respect for electricity after seeing THAT.

please 4 years old no dust :p

This reminds me of our server (the Dilithium) at my old company. One day it's processor fan broke, and we didn't want to interrupt it's 176 (or something) days without a reboot, so we tried to fix it without turning the machine off. We fixed it, allright, but we ended up breaking one of the fan blades, and went back to where we started.
And talking about fans, ask Shrike about my comp's cooling system at home. :D
-
Heh heh, externally mounted fan. :D
-
Mine sounds like an aircraft when i turn it on :jaw:
-
Just wait till I get my liquid nitrogen cooling system (Shrike's idea). The plan to break into White Martins is almost done now... :D
