Title: So I lack a full version of FS2
Post by: Mars on December 26, 2008, 11:52:29 am
And its going to be a while before I can buy one. Is there any way of playing Freespace Conversion or, more specifically, ST:R without it, or should I just wait?

I'd put my money on wait.

Good side answer: GOG?
Evil side answer: Torrent? (Or torrent first, then buy from GOG when you can)

You could always use that weird "make copies for your friends" legal thing (which I'm not even sure is legal) to get somebody to send you a copy.

GOG all the way. It's merely 6$, and you get the FS2 and support GOG and make all the puppies in heaven and earth happy.

I was able to install the SCP without the retail FS2, in fact I've never purchased it.

I did play the entire FS2 campaign if that's your next question xD

Indeed. FSO can be installed without FS2. It just doesn't work.

It can be made to work by clever usage of Standalone Mods and the MVPs.
But you'll get no support if you mess up putting the stuff together.

It also requires some knowledge of what files FSO wants before it'll actually run...and even then its difficult.

Well if FS2 was omitted within the past year or so then I understand.

Hmm, interesting. Between the FS2 Demo, FS Open, the Media VPs, and Freespace Port... you might just be able to run it. I'd say go for it, and let us know if there's anything it doesn't find. I'd be curious to find out (possibly a Shivan cargo container, or something.)
