Title: Problem with the retail FS2
Post by: jakeslogan on December 27, 2008, 08:27:32 am
1st/ sorry for my bad English.
2nd/ I'm using a pure retail version of FS2. I don't know what's wrong but I've ran into some troubles while playing the Nebula mission, the screen laggged sooo muchhh but the sound was fine(smooth, loud and clear). It lagged more and more when more Shivan ship jumped in.
3rd/ I really want to set up the FSO but my computer is pretty old. I wonder if there's any version which is suitable for my PC???
here's what i got:
Code: [Select]
Intel P4 3Ghz
128MB Geforce FX5500
RAM DDR 512MB
Windows XP Prof SP3

I've been using FSO on a machine with 1.4 GHz and a GeForce 2 Card until some months ago, and the machine
was fast enough for playing, although not with all effects on.

Get the 3.6.10 MediaVPs, but don't use the adveffects vp.

MV_Music isn't included, so grab that if you want high-quality music files.

great ;7 so mediaVP just needs 3 files mv_assets mv_core and mv_effects, right??? BTW, is there anyway I can see the Hades in the Techroom???
About the Game Speed in the Features section, should I turn on or off some option to make the game faster??? I've experienced severe lag in the first SOC mission (scan and protect the Iceni).

Which MediaVPs are you using? You should download the 3.6.10 Complete pack, then go into the MediaVPs folder and remove adveffects.

This should eliminate the problem with lag on the first SOC mission -- if you had the 3.6.10 betas, the asteroids caused severe framerate hiccups.

Ctrl-Shift-S.

Well, I manually set up MediaVPs by downloading separate files, maybe it's the cause of the lag. My connection is not so good, so is there another way to fix this thing???

Thanks, I'm able to see the Hades now, if I want to see ship in FS:The Great War, do I need to install FSPort???

No. (assuming that you've downloaded the final 3.6.10 MediaVPs) the mv_complete thing merely contains all the separate files. There are no differences between them. But by the sound of things, I'd like you to download the latest nightly build (link to the nightly builds board in my signature) and run the build that starts with "fs2_open_3_6_10r". This will generate a file called fs2_open.log to \freespace2\data\. After you're done with the operation, post your fs2_open.log here. That will enable us to find out whether you have a mess in your installation or not.

if I want to see ship in FS:The Great War, do I need to install FSPort?
Yes.

I'm using nightly build 5020 and I downloaded my MediaVPs  from this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html)
I've played it again (in debug mode of course), and it looks like the asteroids is the cause. There's also something pop-up during the mission.
This is my log and something pop-up during the game play.

For your latter question, just go to the Silent Threat Reborn forums on this board.

Most likely yes. Depends a little on the other system specs as well. But you may want to read a few posts from this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58371.msg1178740.html#msg1178740).
