Using Turey's Installer, I attempted to try and fix FS2_Open and make it all updated an nice... but I was mistaken! Everything I downloaded was worthless. Everything has failed, and every mission I attempt has missing graphics somewhere. The entire game refuses graphic difference, and refuses to use any of the mediavps. It also made every model retail, and does not like to use new models... if they exist.
I downloaded everything there is... what do I do to actually play FS2_Open? Everything is broke!
-
Okay. Do you have an FSOpen build selected in the launcher?
Do you have the MediaVPs selected as your mod? The MediaVPs should be in a folder.
Are your graphics set to OpenGL in the launcher, rather than Direct3D?
Can you run a debug build and post your fs2open log?

Relax and take a deep breath.
Then tell what exactly is going wrong. Good place to start would be to post the following:
1. The layout of your FS2_Open directory, either via screenshot or as a file/directory listing on text like this:

2. Your system hardware (graphics card, mainly) and operating system.
3. Find a debug build, run it, let it fail, then post the ..\FreeSpace2\data\fs2_open.log which will tell what is wrong.
My guess is that you haven't moved the necessary retail files to the new directory. The retail files are no longer available on the FSOinstaller, so you need the following files on the directory before running the installer to get a working FS2_Open installation out of the procedure:
root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
If you don't have these, you'll get errors about cursor not found or something like that, and running FSOpen will fail. If this is the case, locate the listed files from your old installation, and move them to the new directory, then re-try. If not, then we'll proceed with further troubleshooting.
As to what you need - you need the aforementioned files, a Launcher.exe and a FS2_Open build, which are provided by the FSOInstaller. All else is, strictly speaking, optional. But you will want to get the game running first...
...Battuta said the same things but with less words, but I'll still post this in case I guessed the problem correctly.

dear lord, tell us you didn't DELETE all the original stuff?
otherwise you'll have to buy the retail files from Good Old Games.

I narrowed it down to two things:
My card does not support proper OpenGL for the 3.6.10 build with the MediaVPs. Also, 3.6.10 does not work on my system at all.
Oh well, I worked around alot of the features to make it playable. It's a mix of low LODs and really nice glows and other effects.
I just played Derelict up to the mission where they port in the Narlothotep (sp?) and the riot occurs.
I missed all of this, years ago, when I first joined because I -had- FS1/STR + FS2 + Bonus CDs (on disc, even!) that I got for $20 bucks due to the persuasion of another member.
At any rate, I fixed it -- Alot of it due to my laptop's issues (Dell Inspiron 1525 series)...
But it did remind me that I have always loved the work... now I'm just catching up. :)

Details for future reference plox? Which graphics processing unit is it, and what exactly does the 3.6.10 say when it doesn't work?

Please, could you tell what exactly you have done to make it playable, what constitutes as playable, and what exactly you are using now. It'd be good to know in case someone else comes here asking for advice regarding similar issues.
Also, I'm moving this to FS2 Open Support since that's where it belongs to. :)

So, did this guy not bother setting mediavps as the current mod or something?
-
Oh crap...So I have to get the Retail FS2 in order to get sparky etc???

You kind of needed to have it for....everything

I mean....I had FS2 SCP I downloaded earlier in the year. Then it got "deleted" sorta....LET'S LEAVE IT AT I MISPLACED THE FILES!!! Anyhoo...there's no other way to play the game now without getting the retail version first?

....in short, NO
However, there are....other methods, but the HLP and the majority of its members frown upon the use of warez, torrents etc
-
In other words, go buy the game at GOG, freeloader. :p
-
Although if you recently deleted the retail files and not made any real adjustments to your computer you might be able to salvage them with files like SmartUndelete.
I managed to retrieve some of my data/mission files that way.

Well, you don't have to get the retail FS2 first, but you do have to get it eventually. We hope that you'd buy it from Good Old Games, since those guys are awesome and FS2 costs $5.99 there, compared to eBay where you might have to pay $70 for the same game.
Of course, you can always try to find warez0rz so that you could download it illegally, but you'd be on your own. No one shall post illegal download links of FS2 here at HLP, under the penalty of ban.

I'll get the retail someday then...Thanks guys...
