I've installed FreeSpace 1 & 2 on Linux Ubuntu 8.10 (manually, with the latest svn builds and VPs), using some retail Freespace 2 elements. It works fine with mediavps mod only, but FreeSpace Port 3.1.1 doesn't work, it closes as i try to launch it and my mouse cursor remains stuck so I have to restart X.
The console tells me that a "fatal error" happened. How can I run this safe ?
Sorry for my bad english !

Find fs2_open.log and post it for us, please! Maybe there'll be some hints.
But the game does work fine with the MediaVPs? And what do you mean 'some retail Freespace 2 elements'? You should have the full FS2 installed.

1) I have no log (not in my home, not in .fs2_open, not in the game directory)
2) I installed the game manually, that means I extracted manually the game files from the CDs of FS2.
When I launch the game with "-mod /mediavps", it works (i use the new single VP file), and in hi res.
When I launch the game with "-mod /fsport,/mediavps" or "-mod /fsport,/fsport_mediavps" or "-mod /fsport,,/mediavps,/fsport_mediavps"... it shows a start screen (like when I launch fs2_open with mod /mediavps) and it closes.

If you (try to) run a debug build, it will generate a file called fs2_open.log in your \freespace2\data\ folder.
Incidentally, who stickied this and why? I mean, if there is an important reason to it, I'd just like to know.

Ohhh. You're adding those to your command line? That's wrong, I believe...you should be using a mod.ini file placed in the Freespace Port directory. Did you install the Port with Turey's Installer? That should supply one.
-
I did everything manually, but i had a mod.ini, and nothing about mod loading in it.

Actually, using the "-mod" command-line parameter manually is quite right, and I'd dare to say that it is even more recommended than a mod.ini on Linux.

How can I build a debug version ? Can I do it with my sources ?
-
I... don't know. Linux is a bit out of my range. If you can figure out something by yourself, download the latest nightly build for Linux (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,60005.0.html) and hope that it somehow included the debug build. If not, we must wait for people with Linux knowledge to respond to this thread.

Perhaps the problem comes from the organisation of the game directory.
I could make a "tree" and compare it with a working install...

No problem anymore. The build 5020 works perfectly.
