Title: Feature request: targeting menu
Post by: FSW on January 01, 2009, 12:12:16 pm
Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but a cursory search didn't turn anything up.

With all the advances made in FSO, pressing T to cycle through everything in sensor range seems a little primitive and clumsy. Currently, the alternative is to pause the game with F4, breaking the flow the the gameplay, in order to assign hotkeys.

What if it were possible to select a from an in-flight menu? Perhaps it could work like the command menu, using numbers for navigation. It might be arranged, for example, like this:
Allegiance > Category > Class > Wing > Designation
eg, Friendly > Transports > GTT Argo > Iota > Iota 1

It wouldn't be the fastest way to target in every circumstance, but this would make it much easier to find a specific ship in a mission with dozens of diverse objects; sentry guns, containers, and the like. Obviously, liberal use of the 0.(More) option would be made in some missions more than others.

Is this kind of thing possible in FSO, without having to add a value to every ship's table?

I can't imagine it isn't possible but seeing as how it would need a new key to activate it, I doubt it can be added before 3.7.

It might be easier to do with scripting.

FSW, you should familiarize yourself with some of the advanced targeting controls. They can help you find most of what you're looking for.

F = Friendly
H = Hostile
N = New arrivals
E = Escort list
U = Unscanned
Y = Target in reticle
B = Hostile Bomb/Bomber
R = Hostile attacking you
G = Target's attacker

If you're having trouble locating targets visually or by targeting consider using radar icons (http://fsport.hard-light.net/extras/MV_radaricons.vp) with an appropriate build. (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/files/fso-WIN-20081217_r5008-Wanderer.7z)

Speaking of the radar icons, might someone induce Wanderer to make a newer radar icons build based on current SVN trunk? The current r5008 radar icons build leaves me with the error of Vasudan command showing up on comms in Silent Threat: Reborn and I know that more recent SVN builds fix that issue. I just don't relish the idea of giving up the icons. It gives me the feel of my radar actually getting a hull paint on larger targets, giving me a silhouette of them.

I'll have one uploaded within a day or two, he just synced his branch with trunk today.
