Title: FSport 3.1.1 on Retail FS2 Notes and other Stuff!!
Post by: Spuddy2000 on January 06, 2009, 04:48:44 pm
Great update and superb ST:R campaign.
Few note for Retail FS2 running.
1) You need FS2 CD 1 in your machine to run the intro movies. I changed the CD list in the campaign to use the FS CD2.
2) I have managed to get the weapons table working from my hacked version of FSPort v2.3 working (use attached file).
WARNING Weapons are not correct and you will get unpredictable results in missions on campaign.
I dont know why it works  (anybody got any ideas?)  and will try and convert the v3.1.1 table to work.

The ST:R campaign also very good but wrong vasudan cap ship icon in briefing made me create my own from the GVD Typhon.
I have uploaded the icons for you to try see if it works for you. Install in data/interface/.

My rating for your work 9.99 out a 10 good stuff guys :yes2:

If you run ST:R on retail, you will need BOTH the ST:R campaign AND the Port in your retail FS2 folder.  I suspect that's the reason for your weapons.tbl problem.  (Or you might have another rogue VP or table somewhere.)

Thanks for the Typhon briefing icon. :)  We have been using the GVD Hatshepsut icon because we haven't created a Typhon icon yet.

So, uh, why don't you have FSOpen? It's awesome.

We can walk you through a setup if you like.

It could be that he is playing retail for teh lulz. And since the team has worked hard to maintain retail compatibility, it is only good that some people actually play retail.

Many thanks for all your help.

I know the SCP version is super cool. :D :D
The reason I use FS Retail is the fact I have a crap PC 500MHz and 128M ram and its good to see if the port really is compatable with FS2 Retail. :eek2: :eek2:

By the way the vasudan cap ship icon is not correct it looks too dark on the briefing screen. I think I have the keyframes wrong or the background the wrong colour. The icon is actually used in the first mission of Operation Templar and not the ST:R campaign.

I have attached the frames if anybody can fix it I would be grateful.
I'll try to see if I can fix the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong (never had to try it so far), but if you have FSOpen isn't it possible to shut down the graphical features, making it look like retail, but keep the other nifty things in?
If yes you could at least enjoy some other features like target info, next to the target brackets or 3D radar (or not having to put the CD into the drive).

Besides you can experiment how much of the eyecandy your computer can handle and maybe you're gonna get more out of it than you think.

It seems to confuse some users. Yes. The FSO engine itself doesn't do anything but provide the new features. It doesn't offer any graphical updates itself. The MediaVPs do that.

Well... there are some differences. Mainly that the FS2_Open uses OpenGL and FS2 retail uses Direct 3D as graphics device. It also does, as far as I know, use stuff like hardware transformation and lighting continuously, even with retail data, so there are some minute differences between some things on retail an FSO.

This means that the comparative performance between FS2 retail and FS2 Open may vary depending on level of OpenGL capacities and D3D capacities of the card, and other stuff like that... As far as actual performance goes when the system is compatible with both retail and FSO... they should be more or less on equal basis. But FS2_Open has better compatibility with new video cards, while FS2 Retail doesn't even require OpenGL so it likely works better on older and integrated GPU's, for which it was coded.

Turning specular lighting and other features off does make things pretty close to retail, but the engine still uses for example default lighting values that might be slightly different from what retail D3D graphics used.
