Title: Video Card and Registry Settings
Post by: professor arkham on January 11, 2009, 10:33:13 am
First, thanks for a great game!
I have two registry settings in the FS2 section that I know are jacked up.  First one for the vanilla distro was my fault.

Registry entry that needs attention:
Code: [Select]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Volition\Freespace2]
"EregCount"=dword:00000003
"Videocard"="OGL -(1024x768)x16 bit"

I have an MSI 6800GT video card.  Would someone please tell me the correct setting or the default setting?  I remember it being Direct3D something..but was lazy and changed it without backing it up!!  Dumb dumb dumb!!  :-)

I also updated to the latest version 3.6.9 and (man it took a long time !!)  and launched the game.  the Ships are all multi pixelated color (as is the sun and nebulae background etc)  They're just squares etc..  Does anyone know what that is?

 Registry entry that *MIGHT* needs attention:
Entire entry:

I just bought the game from GOG.  I can't tell what version it is.  Some file versions are 1.2 and some are 1.0x.  The updated says it can't find the old file, so maybe that's an issue too.

Thanks everyone!!

Uhh...

My my. There should never be any need to mess with the registry when talking about FreeSpace. If there really is need to tamper with your current registry entries, I'm going to leave it to other people.

I also updated to the latest version 3.6.9 and (man it took a long time !!)  and launched the game.  the Ships are all multi pixelated color (as is the sun and nebulae background etc)  They're just squares etc..  Does anyone know what that is?
With FSO, OpenGL is highly superior compared to Direct3D, mainly because there are no resources or reason to support Direct3D. With 3.6.9, make sure that you've selected OpenGL from the Launcher's Video tab. Alternatively, download the latest 3.6.10 nightly build from the Nightly Builds board (link in my signature). Among other advantages, they'll forcefully select OpenGL, as well as enable the jpg/tga textures.
Note that there are also 3.6.10 MediaVPs available. I'm not entirely sure but Turey's FSO Installer might download them. If not, they are available for manual download at the FreeSpace Upgrade Project board.

I think there is, or has been, some confusion at GOG. They say the game is 1.2, when in reality it is older. Download this crack pack (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/HotUv1.20Pack.rar) (ignore the name) and replace the Root_fs2.vp file in your \freespace2\ folder with the file in the pack.

If graphical problems persist, run the 3.6.10 debug build (the one starting with "fs2_open_3_6_10d") at least until you get to the Main Hall, then quit. It will generate a file called fs2_open.log to \freespace2\data\. Post that file here, either as an attachment or using the "code" tags.

Edit: Oh, switch to 32-bit colours. 16-bit colours are much more prone to errors.

Thanks for the info.  I got the reg key fixed for vanilla FS2.  Oh yeah, I updated the program with the crack pack as well.  I also switched to 32 bit color as well.

 I haven't updated to .10 yet.  I thought I'd add a screen shot to illustrate the problem I'm having with the view.  That square is supposed to be the sun.

Can't think of anything else than making sure that your drivers, especially GPU drivers, are up to date. If that's not the case, run the debug build and post the .log according to the instructions in my previous post. That might shed some light.

Will do.  I switched to Direct3D mode and the problem went away.  At least I know it's and OpenGL problem on my machine at this point.   Thanks!

You're out of date a bit.  The original root_fs2.vp in the GOG release was the old 1.0 version, but they've since updated it to 1.2 (although I don't think they really publicized the fix).

Everything is working in the modified vanilla version.  I updated my video drivers.   I'll have to investigate the others like Blue Planet to see what's up.  Thanks everyone.

Which is why I included the "or has been" part in there. Thanks for the clarification.
