I guess this isn't that big of a deal, but I'm one of those OCD people who likes to achieve everything in a game thats possible. That said, I've never gotten past Lt. in the medals of FS2. Invariably after I switch to some random mod, my pilot gets his stats deleted. However sometimes when i switch mods (i always use the launcher) this doesn't happen. What file is getting changed, and is there a known way to properly do things so that stats never get deleted? I looked around for some other thread about this but "pilot" appears in a crapload of threads . I noticed that in the install instructions for one mod it specifically said "create a new pilot" before starting campaign, whats the reason for that? If theres already a thread about this just point me to it, thanks.

You'll just have to wait for the new pilot file code. Alternatively you could play multi. You can achieve Admiral there after playing a few years.
Oh and it's best to use a different pilot for each mod. Switching mods is know to corrupt pilot files.
-
Oh, so its something thats known to happen. So just by chance a certain mod might mess it up while others wont?
-
Well switching campaigns without finishing them is a definite recipe for disaster if you use the same pilot. I don't think any campaigns/mods cause it to happen more then others.
-
Despite the warnings, I've been able to maintain the same pilot file for a very long time across multiple mods/campaigns without having it corrupt. I'd assume it's because I don't switch between multiple active campaigns at the same time, or at least don't play any missions in a new campaign if I have to switch to it for testing purposes.
Of course, there's no guarantee that my pilot won't magically corrupt itself tomorrow, but such is life. :p

Yea I've been pretty lucky with it too. I had the same pilot in TBP for ages until a couple days ago. Of all things an updated campaign caused it to corrupt. I finished the 2 mission demo awhile back. A 4 mission demo was just released. Corrupted the pilot as soon as I tried to play the first mission.

I've never really managed to keep FS2 pilots around, but I have an XvT pilot from around 2000 or 2001 still sitting around archived somewhere.
-
I had been on the same pilot since the new MVPs came out, then I started Flames of War CH2 and *POOF* he got screwed.

On a related note, will these 'new pilot files' bypass the current pilot limit? I run a lot of mods, and I'm currently just shy of the limit.
Though switching over to an INF build gave me a nice new set of possible pilots...
