Title: Game crash on starting campaign
Post by: techraven on January 15, 2009, 08:53:59 am
Need help. Game crashes when I start the campaign. This only happens when I use the mediavps. If I specify no mods, game runs fine.
I did a clean retail install, updated the original game, installed FreespaceOpen installer, extracted the freespace upgrade project vps.

The problem is when I specify to use the mediavps in the mods panel. If I set no mods, game runs fine.

I'm running in a Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Vista Ultimate 32bit using 9600gt.

Which .exe have you specified in the launcher, make sure it's one from the nightly builds section

Yeah, make sure you have a recent 3.6.10 build from the Nightly Builds subforum.

Follow the instructions under the "Your fs2_open.log" part.

I am having these crashes too, and it only crash when i use the mediavps. Here is my PC configuration:

Amd Atlhon XP 2400+
768 Mb Ram DDR 400
Geforce FX 5200 128 Mb
(Anything is missing?)
The version of FS2 Open i´ve used is: fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081210_r4989.exe
and the log is attached as you asked. I downloaded and installed everything today, and i think it is up to date.
And i had attached a .txt showing the messages of debug, but i think it is in the log too.
Another thing, when i run the game using the normal fs2_open and i enter the tech room, some models does not show, like GVF Seth and the Orin and Hecate shows with some parts missing, or invisible.
Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

Just looking at your specs here, your graphics card is poor, recommend you upgrade (at least the GRAM anyway), all your specs look fine. I'll leave it to someone who knows the code to help you from there

Yes, i know it. I  bought a new CPU and i am waiting for the delivery, but i already played FS Port in this machine with the mediavps, and everything on. And now it is crashing. Nothing has changed in the pc since i´ve played, it makes a sort of time, like two years ago. I know that a lot has changed, but even techraven with a new pc is crashing. I think that more people will come to comply this.
Best Regards

what campaign are you playing from the start?

I've tried with the FS2 Original with the mediavp, and the FS Port with mediavp too. And both crash the same way.
It crashes too when i enter in the tech room with the debug,  without the debug, the game only crash while loading the campaign, and in the tech room as i sad above, some ships shows with some invisible parts and some of then is completely invisible.
Another question, yesterday the site was offline?
Thanks

Where's Lobo? Maybe he can parse something from your log.

Hmm, I'll try my hand at it.

Well, all I see is that you're not running a new nightly build. Try going to the Nightly Builds forum and downloading the most recent build for your system. Perhaps that'll help.

Are you running any special Nvidia graphics card software? Some kind of forced effects or somesuch?

There have been a few instances like this. On those cases, the culprit has been corruption in the MediaVPs and redownloading has solved the issue. But according to your log your MediaVPs are alright, at least if you compare the checksums and number of files in each .vp to the ones I have. Apart from MV_Advanced, which I don't have and cannot confirm. But as General Battuta already said, you're using an oldish build. There have been some crucial fixes after that date. Try downloading the latest nightly build and see if that works. If not, run the debug build again but this time try to resume the campaign so that we can see what causes the crash there.

I have the exact same issue. As soon as the MediaVPs are off, it runs like it's getting paid for it.

My system is as follows:

Intel C2Q Q9450
Asus P5E Deluxe X48
8GB DDR2-1066
ATI Radeon 4870
Vista x64 Ultimate

I included the log file. I hope this will somehow help :) I really love this game, and I've never played with all the eye-candy on, so.. :/

Hmm. Time to get empirical. Do me a favour: move the file MV_Advanced.vp completely out of your \freespace2\ directory and then try to run the game. If it works, we know that that particular .vp is responsible and there might even be some server-related issues. If it doesn't work, we'll continue.

And in any case, I can assure you that the game is very pretty even without MV_Advanced.

Still no luck. I moved the MV_Advanced.vp out of the directory structure. Want a new log? It seemed to get a little further in the loading process (Debug messages in the top of the screen)

Knock yourself out. We'll see what it turns up.

is it worth telling vista to run these as xp compatable programs? right click/properties etc etc etc

Here we go.
Have to admit that I'm a bit lost here. Can't really pinpoint anything that might cause something like this.

As a long shot, since you seem to have a Radeon, you could try a certain fix. Ati have ****ed up OpenGL in their latest drivers, but you can fix that by downloading this .dll file (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/atioglxx.dll) and placing it to \freespace2\. That way the FSO game engine will use it instead of the one with the drivers and things should work out better.

is it worth telling vista to run these as xp compatable programs? right click/properties etc etc etc
Can't do any harm.

Odd. I tried downloading the dll you suggested Lobo and now I cna't even launch the game from the launcher before it crashes with the standard windows error window. Even with the MediaVPs off, it crashes. And that goes for both OpenGL and D3D. As soon as the dll is out of the dir, it works again(ish)

In that case it is indee best to forget about the .dll entirely.

And that goes for both OpenGL and D3D.
Actually, it is good to note that since Direct3D is unsupported, 3.6.10 builds select OpenGL forcefully regardless of what you've selected from the Launcher.

In any case, now we must wait for teh 1337 people to stumble upon this thread.

A little update!

After seeing the latest post by "fredcioldin" I decided to give it a try. Downloaded all the VPs manually. I used the installer on my previous attempts.

- And it works now! The campaign loads just fine, without any errors.

I haven't got the faintest idea why this is the case, but I'm glad it worked. I hope this isn't a general problem with the installer, though :)

Thanks for the help guys!

Aww, man, you're telling me I'm gonna have to download 1.8 Gb all over again?
I need a broader band connection.

Not as such. The release thread has links to 7-Zipped archives of the MediaVPs. As a result, they're considerably smaller than 1.8GB and will save download time.
