I've just recently updated to 3.6.10, I sat down and I went through the checklist and paced myself to ensure everything ran smoothly.
Unfortunately it didn't, first run had a few errors when starting up and finally I ran to the techroom as fast as I could. When it opened up my jaw dropped and my eyebrows slanted and I screamed.
Alot of the ships were very.....ugly...no thats being nice, they were god awful, it looked like some of them had their original retail textures on, but with some blurring effects as well as being burned. It was like if the SSD Lucifer was a burn victim, this is what it would look like.
But this is not my issue, I understand that in order for progress there must be some sacrifices and that doesn't bother me too much.
My main issue is that I couldn't view one of the bombers before crashing, the Orion was missing parts of its skin, the glitches and problems were so bad I really couldn't play. What is this? hell? Crashing on start up, crashing on loading a menu, crashing when crashing, crashing, crashing, yo dawg we heard you like crashes so we put crashes in your carwrecks so you can crash when you crash.
I want to go back, I want my 3.6.9, but it seems when I return to turey and beg for retribution no mediavps files for 3.6.9 are added, neither is my fs2port.
Did I do something wrong? Something I missed? Why is this being so damn difficult?

Yes. Probably. No, it's not.
Could you run a debug build and post the fs2_open.log file it generates to \freespace2\data\?

Yeah, but you're going to have to wait, I nuked it all and in the process of downloading it yet again.
-
I nuked it all
Most excellent. In that case I hope that you either own a copy of FS2 or are going to buy it for six dollars at GOG.

HOPE?! If I'm any god damn freespace loving individual I will own the game good sir!
Actually I've been hunting for the boxart for months. I think some one threw it out which is going to get me really really pissed. Because no one makes boxart like that any more. I would gladly give my pair for the boxart.

Hah, wow still doing it!

Are you attempting to run the game using Direct3D settings or else an older launcher or FSO Exe build? I suggest the following for the best graphical performance:
- 3.6.10 MediaVPs
- Launcher 5.5d
- A bleeding edge nightly exe build.
Also, if you're using a Radeon video card, those have been known to cause issues. The new MediaVPs demand the use of OpenGL, which tends to run better on Geforce cards.

Haven't got the 6.10 or the 5.5d, but it was doing the same things as its doing now if not worse when I had them. Right now some of the ships are looking alot better than they had this morning.

That fs2_open.log sure would be awesome.

Excellent. Could you wrap some "code" tags around it so that it wouldn't take so much vertical space?
Like this.
Now, you do indeed have the 3.6.10 MediaVPs (hopefully the official release instead of the Betas), which work best with a recent enough 3.6.10 build. At least for most people. Download the latest nightly build from the Nightly Builds board (link in my signature) and use it. It will complain about the -jpgtga flag, since 3.6.10 builds enable those by default, so just OK yourself through it. Then, tick on Enable normal maps from the Launcher. And before running the game, go through all the \data\cache\ folders under your \freespace2\ folder and delete any files they might contain.
With a 3.6.10 build you should also notice that playing with a widescreen resolution is far more enjoyable.
-
Well firstly, you're not seeing normal maps with that command line configuration, so:
1) Get a nightly build (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,60414.0.html) and set the launcher to use it instead of the 3.6.9 build.
2) Follow step 4 of the MVP release thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html) to set up your command lines.
3) Look at it in-game again, and maybe get us a screenie of the lucifer from the ship lab (to get to it, in the main hall press F3->ship->shivan->Lucifer->LOD 0)
That way we'll be able to see what's wrong directly.
-
With a 3.6.10 build you should also notice that playing with a widescreen resolution is far more enjoyable.
Really? I should try that. :)
-
Surely you have noticed that if you play on a widescreen resolution and the 3.6.9 build, the suns and other background elements tend to "wander" when you turn your ship. This issue has been resolved on 3.6.10 builds for quite some time now. Granted, the interface art and the HUD remain a bit stretched but that is insignificant.
-
Also, don't forget to download the latest launcher, 5.5d, which is fully (normal maps) 3.6.10-compatible.
-

I don't know if you had noticed but I had said I was getting the same errors with these things. The only thing differently I am doing is deleting from my data cache but it only has 1 item in it any way. And its that bomber04
So basically it still doesn't explain to me why I'm missing textures and why suddenly some ships are looking better than they had this morning.
-

Link in my signature for those who need it.

In regards to morning, you might have had a completely ****ed-up installation if you didn't know what you were doing during update, but that we shan't find out, since you liquidated your previous installation. In regards to your other problems: I do hope that you've updated your graphics drivers as well. And it probably wouldn't hurt to go through your graphics drivers' settings and make sure that everything in there places the emphasis on quality instead of performance.
-
In-game settings too. The default settings of FS2 after installation are "High" which in fact does not maximize all options, so hit F2 in-game, go to Details and max everything out if you haven't done so already.
Also, I can't help but wonder if there's something oddly similar going on as here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,60325.0.html), even though the GPU in this case is vastly superior... :nervous:
EDIT: Hud elements being stretched is due to interface resolution being 1024x768 - it's stretched at any higher resolution anyway. The bugs with background elements and HUD elements not being aligned with the 3D environment have been fixed though, and the stretching/aspect distortion of the HUD is not really an eyesore at all, more like something you can tell if you know it's there but while playing you forget it.

That looks pretty closely to what I saw on " some " of the ships. I have a feeling we got a overlooked bug, it would be my luck to get something like that.
I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to help me out. I really really really hope this is a fluke or something stupid I overlooked, because I've been excited for this update and enjoy playing freespace this way.

If you inferred sarcasm from my post, than that was not intended. If you didn't, well, I apologize. :nervous:
I did notice when I originally tried widescreen with the older builds that the HUD elements were stretched and targeting brackets were out of wack. I did not hear about this being fixed in 3.6.10
PS: Sorry for hijacking your thread, LT.

Okay, so browsing tech room again everything " Seemed to be working fine "
Then I found yet again missing ships, fenris doesn't want to show up now lul
tried to look at some other ships, game froze, ect
Isn't this the sexiest orion you've ever seen? Its like, we want to battle shivans, but we don't want to spend alot of money.
* News Flash Edit*
Okay so I still crash when looking at the medusa and the vasuden Bes is probably the ugliest looking mediavp I have ever witnessed. Its like going back in time and adding blur and shine to it.

The basic old techroom is not a good place to preview things - go to the ship lab (Main hall -> press F3 -> Ships -> Orion -> LOD 0)
To me it looks like maybe a combination of a few possible problems.
The first is that judging by that screenshot, whatever textures are showing are looking pretty ugly mipmap wise. To fix that you'll need to go into the Nvidia control panel and set 3d rendering to quality rather than performance.
The second thing is those missing textures - the holes in the orion are interesting, because they appear to be killing off only textures that would ordinarily have glowmaps....
........
In fact....the more I look at these errors - I realise the only thing they all have in common is that they're all files from MV_Assets, so maybe yours is corrupt - try deleting the one in your mediavps folder and replacing it with a fresh one from the release thread here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html
Basically, bomber04.pof is in Assets, the shivan weapons TBM is in Assets, all the ships (including the missing fenris) are stored in assets, all glowmaps are in assets as are all textures including glass.dds. A problem like old drivers might cause the missing orion textures, but it wouldn't account for the shivan cluster bomb problem. Nor would rogue data account for missing textures. It just has to be the MV_Assets.VP file itself.

Aaaand that means absolutely nothing to me, and I'm far too tired to google it. :p
Let me know if a new copy of the VP works. ;)

Check, check and check.
Everything is fine, no problems!
Its an old old old ollllld qoute from a game called StarSiege, eh, I figured some one who enjoyed freespace would know that one.
I'd see if that other guy qouted in here has some bad assets as well, speaking of which I had downloaded 2 different assets that seem to be bad. One is off tureys auto installer and the other is from somewhere on the 3.6.10 page. I'd report this to some one, but I'm not entirely sure who to go to about it.

I merely wanted to point out that you must have noticed these weird things with widescreen, all of which can be fixed by using a 3.6.10 build. As a confirmatory sort of thing.
Everything is fine, no problems!
