I think I may have brought this up AGES ago on the VBB, but here goes.
Has anyone noticed how some Shivan ships look like evolved versions of smaller ships?
For example: Scorpion -> Shaitan (still has that "stinger" and looks like a flattened Scorp)
Basilisk -> Azrael -> Demon
Manticore -> Seraphim -> Cain/Lilith -> Lucifer -> Sathanas
Has anyone else seen this?

I think its more lazy modellers not being able to come up with original shapes
-
I rather think it's a will to keep a common design :rolleyes:
have you ever heard about the fact that having wcompletly different designs put together ruins the whole feeling?
bah.

kinda like my ships all follow the theme of being very b.....
ive said too much, you all must wait until the mod is released :D

The ships aren't so much evolved as they are added on to. Look at US Navy fighters today, or the US fighter planes of World War 2. Better yet, look at Boeing's original 707 and compare it to a modern 777.
Design elements that work well are kept; those that do not are changed. This gives rise to a series of designs called a 'ship line'. Starlancer showed this off very well, in the progression from the Predator on to the Patriot and the Phoenix, and to a lesser extent, the Shroud (I've missed one in there somewhere).
I know in my case, as a 3d modeller, shiplines arise from commonalities of elements. Being able to reuse the same bits over and over again, in different ways, makes it easier to build things. Take a look, for example, at my Waterdancer, Braavosi, Misato, Kierra, Molly, Jaycy, Mavra and (to a lesser degree) Nathaniel. All of them have share things in common. The engines on the Waterdancer are actually reused on the Kierra. The Kierra, Jaycy, Misato and Molly all have the same cockpit and central fuselage. That central fuselage was taken from the original Nathaniel. The Nathaniel's engines are what gave rise to the original engines on the Waterdancer.
I'm sure that a similar process was followed by the Volition team working on Shivan ships.

I've noticed that FS1 Shivan ships have 'noses' as apposed to 'spikes'. Compare the Lilith, Demon, and Lucifer with the Rakshasa, Moloch, and Sathanas. Same goes with the freighters (Asmodeus vs. Dis) and fighters (Basilisk vs. Astaroth).

Terran ships change in much the same maner, i bring your attention to the Hercules, Herc II, and Ares :D

That "nose" projection in the front of some of the Shivan ships actually looks a bit like part of a Shivan head. ;)

add, at least, the nephilim an in some extent the mara :) (and alos a couple of mines :p )

The Manticore is essentially a small Seraphim and the Dis is a small Sathanas in my opinion, but I cannot really see too many other similarities there. They need more ships like the Nephilim and Ravana though; those things look really unusual and alien. ;)
-
The Nephilim freaks me out. It's just... like... malformed, or something. Scary. :)
-
The Nephilim looks like one-winged duck.
Look it in the profile. (on the side).
:nod:

The newer GTVA fighters all seem to follow a common pattern (bar the Ptah and Pegasus) of a central fuselage with 2 huge engines mounted onto the sides - Erinyes, Bakha, Herc 2, Perseus, Artemis..... etc

her... why-, because the manticore has two arms and the Dis 4?
if you look a coouple second, there's really not much in common between them and the seraphim/sathanas. really nothing at all in fact.
-
Actually I meant the Manticore/Seraphim and the Dis/Sathanas combinations. :p:D

upload them as .txt files, and reference them as such. I haven't tried angelfire, but it tricks Tripod well enough.

1. If the Shivans do have some sort of hive mind, even limited it goes to reason that they'll have the same influences for every ship design.
2. If the Shivan craft are organic, it follows that they all were developed from the same base organism, and they would have some of the same attributes. Such as spikes, ect.
