Title: tinfoil needs help
Post by: tinfoil on January 25, 2009, 12:56:11 am
Okay so i was playing nhl 09 when i left for awhile and accidentally let my computer go into standby.
I came back and the game had stopped responding and no keys worked to do anything. This is normal.

I then pressed buttons until i hit upon the combination ctrl-shift-f11. I got to task manager and killed the game but when i got out of it my graphics were all screwed up and my graphics card seemed to not be doing it's job.
no amount of rebooting or unplugging helps. I am using an ati card if this makes a difference.
I really hope someone can give me a hand here, because nothing is really working at all right now and for undisclosed reasons i really really need that computer.

Have you tried booting into safe mode or depending on what OS boot in VGA mode?  If you can't do either one of those you probably fried something.

. . . and for undisclosed reasons i really really need that computer.

Go buy a magazine  :p

My standard procedure for when I screw something up (usually on my Linux partition, mind you) is this:

1. Get it to turn on at all
2. Attempt to get it working like it did before I screwed something up.
       - 2a. Resolve to get it to get to defaults.

As others have said, boot into safe mode if you can, and try to reinstall the drivers.

Before installing the new drivers you may want to use some sort of driver cleaner as well.

alright.
but what really bugs me is what i could have possibly done to screw over it that badly

EDIT: wtf, i tried a system restore and it says that no changes have been made when it is clear that changes have indeed been made. i guess i'll try safe mode.

EDIT2 in safe mode the weird colour/ icon glitching is gone but there is still a jacked up resolution. why is that? obviously nothing is completely fried but something is seriously wrong and to be honest, I'm a little scared to mess around with my drivers.

At first after reading this comment I was like this:

Then I realised you are about half my age. The resolution you are seeing is 640 x 480 x 16 (or 256) colors, the standard VGA format which every graphic card should be able to display. It is a Windows "safe" mode, since my guess is that all cards function in a similar way and don't need a card specific drivers to display it.

Yeah, i figured that out this morning. i'd really like to know how i managed to make it do that though. I think i better stop just pressing buttons to fix things
