Hello people. I just got Freespace 2 Retail, and tried to play it. But unfortunately, it lags a lot, and I believe my hardware is more than powerful enough to run the game.
OS: Windows XP Home SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.20GHz
Video Board: GeForce 7300 SE
The game simply lags a lot while playing.
All my graphic driver are up to date, FIY

Are you running it in compatibility mode?
If that doesn't work, try installing Freespace Open -- you've got the hardware for the MediaVP graphical upgrades.
-
Thanks, compatibility mode solved it :D
But I think I'll get FS Open anyway.

The graphical beauty of it makes it worth the download! Try using Turey's installer, but download the MediaVPs seperately as spme people have reported faults with the mediavps when using the installer to download them.
Good luck and have fun!
P.S.
:welcome:

Um, even though I'm still using the compatibility mode, the lag came back today, for some reason.
It's heavier when there are more models on the screen, like when I'm turned to many asteroids or to many ships. It gets REALLY heavy if I shoot lasers together with missiles.

Are the MediaVPs enabled?

That is disturbing, concidering your system specs and the fact that it happens on retail. Hmm. Try playing with FSO. It can't hurt. Installation instructions are on the stickied thread on this board.

Edit: You said that your graphics drivers are up to date. Good, but I'd advise you to make sure that other drivers are also up to date. Especially audio drivers. You should never underestimate the importance of audio drivers. Trust me on this one.

First choice FS2_Open.
Other than that you can try manually setting the game to only use one core.

Ages ago when playing FS2 retail for the first time, setting the audio to use "Aureon 3D" or something along those lines caused rather laggy experience. Switching to DirectSound helped. But migrating to FS2_Open is probably the best advice in this case...

He did say he was planning to get FSOpen, Lobo -- it's perfectly reasonable to ask if he'd started using it.

can you post the details of your graphics card.... i know its a 7300 but it would help if you could use gpu (links in lobos post at the bottom)
in my experience your gpu will run fsopen but , it will slow down with normal maps etc and if you use mediavps it will slow down even more (10-15 fps)
there are solutions to this , i run a 7300 on an acer laptiop and i have managed to get good (better than some much higher end gpu) so please post your gpu... and good luck

Thanks everyone. I'm getting FS Open, and hopefully that will help the lag stop. As I type, the longer download of the installer is at 99% :P

have fun. it really is one hell of a game, especially with all the new stuff.

If you have any problems with the MediaVPs, download them direct from the release thread in the Freespace Upgrade Project forums.

True that. But, as you said: he said he was planning to get FSO, which suggested to me that surely he'd tell us if he had acquired FSO after starting this thread. And the fact that with such a configuration, FSO and even the MediaVPs shouldn't cause severe slowdowns.
