Well it seems the economy caught up with me. I along with many others around America, lost my job. I was working at a Quiznos for the last 1.7 years, and all of a sudden, one day out of the blue, I get let go\laid off. The buiness was shut down and the owner lost a assload of money.
Anyone else here get pwned by the economy jobwise?
-
Wow....damnnn, your skills in demand?
My dad's company lost an assload as well, 50% of their total profits for 08, however that doesn't sound like so much anymore compared to some other companies. But for a mid level business it hits hard. Luckily, he's in a position where it's easier to say, if he was to get the sack, then everyone else would too.
What are you gonna do now?

My mum keeps narrowly missing getting laid off.
But my uncle did get laid off recently, and he was in some mad science computery job or whatever. Makes me wonder if maybe they will move out of their obscenely huge house into one more like... ours.

makes me curious about the dependability of campus jobs in alaska. I haven't really noticed the recession at all. I'm very oblivious to it, but i did see really cheap things to buy at the store during christmas. 8gb lexar mini flash drive for 17$, you got me sold!!!

Soon as you finish and start working full time, believe me, you'll notice it

It'd be so cool to get some work for summer. But what're ye gonna do. Have to sponge through yet another summer.

I feel sorry for ya. I'm currently looking for a job and it's harder to get one because of a depression :P

Same for me. No-one wants to know a Graduate today.

My job is somewhat insulated...for now. But I know allot of people who are fearing for their positions at various companies. Its starting to become a dire situation. I was thinking of a return to school but with virtually no prospects after graduation from a 1 year program I think I'm going to wait until things get better or my job gets eliminated.

My dad works for an army subcontractor writing firmware for diagnostics suites for vehicles. So my family is good :drevil:

yea.. Military is not affected.... That much...

Well.... there's gonna' be a trend with more people joining the military once this gets in full swing. About one of the only jobs with guaranteed job security.

Well crap.
There will be no layoffs for the forseeable future. We don't have any work right now, but there's work coming and I don't want to lose you.
We're gonna have to lay you off. I was counting on two jobs coming through and neither of them have. We're owed over $400,000 and we just can't afford to keep you. Sorry.
:sigh: This is... unexpected.

What will i do? Donno. Work at some other crappy place. Local Piggly Wiggly or supermarket, another quiznos, Menards or something. Gas station? Eh. No idea, as i said. I had no forwarning, kinda like Galemp. I just up and one day lost it.
And yeah the Military is another topic, which i might as well start later today.

Prof, right?

I think my job is very insulated at campus. The tech department i work in has only 4 people and we provide tech support for 5 grad student buildings. It's great when there's somebody else there to help you or you help them. As much as i can hold down the office myself no one said i didn't like not having someone else around for backup.
Then again i had more fun when i was poorer. Not a single dime in my pocket, but i had no debt. I can always fall back on trust worthy freelance tech support in delta junction. It was fun, just biking miles all over town in the sun with a screw driver and my cd spindle.

Not a prof but I do technology training with profs amongst other things.

No layoffs yet where I work but there was a hiring freeze and they suspended raises and bonuses this year. I got layed off in 2002 but got another job within a month. Tech isn't that bad to be in most of the time. A lot of the time it is the way people represent themselves and the sector they are trying to find a job in. It will pickup. Only thing I don't like about recessions are that companies use it to hire a bunch of people at dirt cheap prices. So when the economy does recover you are getting under paid for your services and have fun time trying to get it adjusted to the market average.

I got dropped a few months back, am returning to Uni, and already managed to pick up a job at the bartending at the uni Tavern here. Also have applied for another job at the WA Museum, I think/hope I'm in with a good shot at that.
I'm hoping that another year at uni will insulate me, and put me out at a better time, but if it doesn't I'll hang on to bartending, try to get a vac job at the end of the year and go back for a year of postgrad geophysics. Fortunately, the government'll pay for it more or less indefinitely, so all I have to worry about is supporting myself
The mining industry in WA is in freefall - by it's nature it's a cyclic thing - boom and bust - but nobody I've spoken to can remember it crashing so quickly from such a height to such a low as we're in now. It was only a year or two ago I remember hearing we had a 20 year mining boom on our hands. Damned optimism. :(

HECS. Interest free loans that only get paid back when you earn enough money, ad that any citizen gets without having to go through any kind of application process. Just tick a box on a form and you're good.

And those bastards said clear skies for the next twenty years...
Well that's what happens when everyone left right and center drops everything and lines up at BP asking for work

Who gets this? How? Lol it sounds good.

Well everyone does regardless really, kind of eliminates the need for a "College Fund".
