Title: Targeting bigger ships
Post by: Nemesis6 on January 28, 2009, 05:17:21 pm
Most of the times I play Freespace 2 missions I run into this problem: A big ship needs to be targeted for whatever reason, but I can't get it on my reticle and target it directly like that. Is it possible to somehow cycle between capital ships or bigger threats? Frantically pressing t, realizing I just passed what I was looking for, repeating the process, and dieing all the whilst isn't working too well!

Doesn't Shift-t cycle targets backward? Also, 'E' selects ships on your escort list, which is usually larger cap ships.

resignation... the best way of targeting cap ships is to look for them in the field and go Y when in the middle of your hud.

right you can use the escort list, add important ships to that list in mission with shift + e if I recall correctly.

You can also set hotkeys (either F3 or F4). I like to do that with friendly fighter wings; you can target all of them at the same time to see where they are real quick.  If you can't spare an escort list spot, use a hotkey.

Ctrl-E, Shift-E is a hotkey for wingmen to engage hostiles.

Using Y to target whatever is at the centre of my HUD is the key I've used the most in playing this series.  Everything else is second to that for targeting.

Yeah, it's really the only targeting control you need to use, other than the escort list targeting function. I've assigned a joystick button next to the hatswitch to reticle targeting I use it so often. T is almost useless, except for things that don't like to be targeted normally.

Although H is useful for targeting hostiles you can't see.

Yeah that's also one you'll use a lot.

Especially when you just start playing freespace. I actually broke my R key when I was 7 playing this game with a friend (we managed a trade-off where he would shoot and handle weapons and I would fly and handle the craft, highly recommend it to any 7 year olds who play FS :D)

Ohh dear...you two could fly the Apollo bomber...and one of you could be Lt. Ash from Terran Patrol Wing Gamma Three-Niner. :drevil:

I remember doing that with my dad when we played Descent 2 with the Vertigo 3D drivers, we died at level 7.

Never thought of that, if anyone ever manages to get a bomber and pilot working as seperate players in multi, I might get him over again and 'relive' what we missed during our childhood, I haven't talked to him in about 6 months, but I'm pretty sure he would be interested to do something we really should've done a while ago.

 I remember playing Descent 3 with my dad when I was about 4, however I don't remember him suggesting we fly and gun respectively. I'll write it down as potential 'Father-Son' time if/when I get hold of a little kiddly-wink   ;)

Well considering the way keyboard and mouse worked, he controlled weapon selection and lateral movements, I steered and fired.

I learnt how to cheat in Descent 3 first before I finally picked up the courage to play it without cheats. That was last year.

Nevertheless, I'm still a very terrible player, primarily because I'm a keyboarder and I set my ship to fly like a car. I cannot last for more than ten minutes on any of the WindMine levels without resorting to BURGERGOD.

As much of a long-time D3 player as I am, last time I checked, this forum's description doesn't mention it anywhere. :p

I thought that was so cool the few times I used it. But even today, i never have time to mess around with it. Too many Shivans.

V still hasn't fixed that  :)
