Title: What should i back up?
Post by: Titan on February 04, 2009, 03:19:33 pm
Well, 2 things happened today: my main comp, runing widows Xp, now refuses start up right. I get a screen with the options for 3 different safe modes, your last known settings, and to just start windows normally. (i'm trying safe mode #3 now...). I also found out that my parents are looking at getting a new computer anyway, because its about 8 years old now anyways.

Anyway, what i need to know: Once  get it working again, what files do i have to copy so that i only have to do the SCP installer o my new comp, rather then buying the original files from GoG? (Well, i have them, don't I? It's not like i'm asking you to post illegal downloads...)

Just backup the whole fs2 directory.  You'll have everything that way and the installer will only need to update what's been updated not everything.

And wait several hours?  :doubt: I don't even have time for that, seeing as my computer time is broken up into about one hour periods, every day. It isn't like rules or anything, it just happens that way.

and possibly FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp, multi-mission-pack.vp and multi-voice-pack.vp, if you have them.

Depending on the method you use to back things up, it shouldn't take several hours to back everything up.

Then I'd recommend the list in my previous post (plus maybe the retail .exe files, just for nostalgia's sake). Those are the bare minimum files you need, concidering that you don't want to buy FS2 from GOG. Everything else can be redownloaded.

Of course, if you 7-Zip the whole ****, you could squeeze some other items in there, like the MediaVPs, for example.

So basically you don't want to fork out 6 bucks to own the game and want to redownload everything eating up someone else's bandwidth on their nickel because you too lazy to toss a disk in the burner and leave or do more than one copy?   :mad2:

i have my fsopen folder backed up 3 times , once on 5 dvd's the same on an external hard disc and just the essential files on a 4gb thumb drive

the time i takes to dl everything agan just scares me (nearly 20gb)

so if i was you id invest in a small external hard drive which you an keep all of your stuff and games on which will keep your parents happy as well

I'll never get the attitude "I want to save my data.... but I don't want to be bothered to back it up!"

Seriously, writting a few gigs through USB shouldn't take hours unless you have a 1.0 port. Even then if it's a REAL problem just do it overnight or something.
