Title: Another FS2 starmap...
Post by: CP5670 on March 18, 2002, 10:12:56 am
I had a little bit of free time yesterday, so I decided to take a break from my usual mission designing and cooked this up:

Nothing special really, but it corrects some of the problems with Volition's FS1 map. (mine is based on the FS2 one shown in the CB animations) Light blue lines indicate stable subspace paths, dark blue lines indicate unstable ones, red lines show paths that were stable at one time but are now unstable, and yellow lines show artifically generated paths. Nebular systems are shown in red.

Interesting.   Was it confirmed that the 'Rim' nodes in Barnards star, etc, were unstable, or just unexplored?

The only criticism is, are unstable nodes not simply ones that do not last long enough to be of use?

I think that by unstable he means the one that once where useable but are not anymore...

Actually no. Unstable nodes can stay there for ages, they are not... well, stable enough for spaceships to travel. Such as the Sol-Delta Serpentis node. It is unstable, but it is STILL there. If it could be restabilized with a Knossos, it could still be travelled, but without a Knossos, they cannot be used by ships.

Nice... but one thing wrong

One of the jump nodes, either Epsilon Pegasi or Vega, was not successfully collapsed...

They both were successfully collapsed since the Nereid still had orders to collapse the node even when the supernova began. Petrarch's speach overall assumes this to be true.

thats the best node map Iv seen, but the nebual is in the worng place, loook closely on Bosch's moniter on one of the cut scenes(I think the 3rd) and you'll see were it should go ;)

Speaking of starmaps, I have begun construction on the DA starmap (its totally 3D !!!:D) to use in CB animaitons

CP, this is nice work, dude! :)

BTW, do you think you could post my RaaHP map(s) up here? I'll e-mail you the pcx files to you in a few minutes. :D

Just remember to keep the two separate (i.e. not as one map). ;)

grrr, this is the third time I am writing this post, thanks to IE and its illegal operation errors.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, everyone. :)

I just assumed that since the GTVA has known about those nodes for many years (they were on the Volition FS1 map), they would have explored them and mapped the territory if they were open to use, so the nodes are probably too unstable. When Petrarch mentions the usage of Knossos devices to stabilize paths to systems previously uncharted, he is probably referring to these. I didn't include a legend do the map though, so they can simply be unexplored nodes if you like. ;)

Yeah, I noticed that as well, but the true location of the nebula system is actually way off to the right, and the map would need to have three or four times its current width to include the system. I guess you could say that the GTVA "extended" map was slightly different from the NTF one. (lame excuse, but hey I needed something :p:D) It would not really matter much though, since the map is not based on the actual location of the stars anyway. Still, let me know if you can think of a way to correct this without extending the map a lot. ;)

Sure, but I'm not exactly sure what you want me to do. Do you just need a place to upload the files? (if so I can put up the images and send you a link)

CP, I was kinda hoping you could post my map here on this thread for me. I don't have the slightest clue how to upload my pcx file (or even if I have the necessary stuff to do it). I sent you the maps, so you should have them in your mailbox if you haven't seen them already.
