Aside from RL reasons...
from /tg/:
The Kun-Laan, knowing that the beast exists outside the galaxy, uses Bentusi technology to leave the galaxy and find and kill the beast once and for all.
They are never seen again, but to this day, if you are close enough to the galactic rim, and have your long range scanners pointed in just the right spot, you can detect just the faintest energy burst indicative of a siege cannon firing off in the distance.
So the story goes, at least.
I just got a kick out of that, and felt a need to share it with someone who would get it. :D

Heh. Cool. Too bad though - I would've much rather had a Somtaaw battlewagon then the Higaaran heavies.
-
They're mentioned in the manual.
-
Because Cataclysm is non canon. :blah:
-
They're mentioned in the manual.
Wait, seriously? They're mentioned where in the HW2 manual?

I can't remember exactly where. Just a mention, though.
Something about "Kiith Somtaaw objects to/supports blah blah blah."
I'm not surprised they couldn't fit more details, since HW2 was in development since before Cataclysm came out. Anyway, it's been a century, you can't really expect them to be around in the same way.

Wait a second... Homeworld Cataclysm is non-canon?
-
Some fans consider it to be. Unfortunately for them, Relic have said that it is canon.
-
Here I thought it was the other way around. :wtf: Ok, awesome, it's canon.

I don't think Somtaaw was mentioned. Maybe you're thinking of Soban or Manaan or Kaalel?

Nope. Definitely Somtaaw.
I remember being very cheered when I saw the reference.

Its not in my manual, but there is a mention in the strategy guide somewhere.
EDIT: http://shipyards.relicnews.com/hw2/index.html (http://shipyards.relicnews.com/hw2/index.html) The history section that appeared in the strategy guide is reproduced here where there's a mention of somtaaw although its more of a name check than anything.

Yeah, I'd believe it in the strategy guide, but I don't think it was in the manual...unfortunately I don't have mine handy.
