Title: Will FSO work?
Post by: azile0 on February 14, 2009, 12:00:40 am
I dug out my old Mac OSX laptop, and I'm installing Freespace retail right now. Will I be able to run FSO with Media VPs with these specs..?

1.8 GHz PowerPC
512 MB DDR RAM
Mac OSX 10.4.11 (latest version)

I know I can run retail, but can I get the bells and whistles?

That's not sounding *that* good, but it should be fine to run without advanced_effects. Is that processor single or duo?

The GPU is equally if not more important than CPU and amount of RAM... Basically if you have OpenGL 2.0 support you should be able to run the game.

My System Profiler says I only have 1 CPU. My Graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9600, 128 mb.

ATI Radeon puts you a shade better than mine when it comes to eye-candy.

Alright. I've finished downloading from GoG, and installing now. I'm frakking exited. I get to play Freespace again! Too bad my new joystick doesn't work with this Mac ( I can't calibrate it? )

I didn't have any problems running everything under XP with an ATI 2006 multimedia which I believe is just a glorified 9600.

Well, For some reason, I don't have FRED. Or FRED Open. Tried re-installing. Running Launcher.app just starts the game, I don't get the menu like on Windows. I can't run mods, and I don't know how to get MediaVPs.. I just completed Surrender, Bellisarius, so I know it runs alright. I tried installing the MediaVPs to the root directory, but it didn't work.

Mac Launcher available here (http://soulstorm-creations.com/PROJECT_SOULSTORM_2_0/cocoa-objective-c/fs2-open-launcher-os-x-3.0.html). Use it to select mods and other options. Or use the command-line parameters manually.

Just a heads-up, azile: the reason why you don't have FRED or fred2_open is because there is no Mac version for either of these applications.

Wait, wait, do you actually have the Launcher for Mac? It should actually launch a launcher, instead of launching the game.

Ah, I see. Well, I have this problem now, when the game will just randomly crash. It first happened when you first encounter the Shivans by the first Knossos. I was shooting the Seraphims, and it just crashes. Same as in the Great Hunt. I'm escorting the convoy through the asteroid field, and right when the cruiser jumps in at the node, it crashed. Very annoying.

Run a debug build and post your log file.

Are you running Mac .exes?

Nope. Debug.app. It's really frustrating. It seems to be when combat is at it's peak, so it may just be that I overload the computer. But still, I don't have MediaVPs on, and I'm running the lowest resolution. I'm trying to tinker with the settings. Has anybody else had this problem, especially on a Mac?

Wait wait wait. We need you to run a debug build of Freespace Open, that being a build that ends in a -d.

Run it till it crashes, then post the log file.

I don't know what debug.app is, but it shouldn't be in any way necessary.

The debug build won't even start.

@azile0 - With your system specs, I guess you can play retail only without any problems but with FSO's mediavps, analysis debug builds you need to upgrade your computer.

Well, it runs fine with the 3.6.8 Zeta MediaVPs, and the crashing problem seems to have fixed itself.

It should work alright, don't pay attention to those who say it doesn't, i run it with a p3 700mhz, 384 ram and an ati 9550, so i think your specs are ok; about the problems you had, it seems you weren't doing things right.

You install the game, then get a Launcher for mac, provided in a link already, then you get a recent build for mac and download the mvps... don't download advanced, you wont be able to run well with those... i hope you can get things working soon. :D

Are you serious! Can you run MVPS on that system? And if so, which version?

Probably the Zeta. Maybe more dated version?
