Title: What if...
Post by: ssmit132 on February 18, 2009, 03:48:08 am
What do you think would happen theoretically if such a document would be released? This is from a short story from Matthew Reilly, I didn't pull this idea out my head. (http://www.matthewreilly.com/images/files/altitude.pdf) (Annoyingly, I had to type it, I couldn't copy it from the .pdf file )
Spoiler:
Dear Herr Hitler,

It is with grave feelings that I write to you today.

Despite our differences, our two great nations are in many ways, similar. Ours are proud nations, strong nations.

In times such as these, my country, like yours, has concerns about the future - about current alliances, and of course, the Soviet issue.

And although, in the past the United States has preferred to remain isolated from conflicts such as the present one, there comes a time when a country must make a decision that will ensure its future, and as such choose allies based not on past allegiances, but on what is best for the nation in the cold hard light of reality.

Although our two nations have traded indirect blows in this burgeoning conflict, the United States is not yet a formal part of this war. Our entry into it, however, need not occur at all.

In this vein, Herr Fuhrer, I propose an alliance between our two great nations - between Germany and the United States of America - that will supercede any previous treaties my country may be party to.

I await your reply. In the mean time, I remain,

Yours sincerely,

Franklin Delano Roosevelt
President of the United States of America
Also, I think
Spoiler:
that if I was the current president of America and someone threatened to release this document if I didn't do X, I would stay 'Go ahead and release it for all I care, this was in the past and is irrelevant now.' I mean, most people don't care about Italy being allied with WWII Germany.

If someone finds this thread offensive, sorry, I just want to see what other people think of this. :nervous:

personally i think it would cause little or no effect at all

as for causing offence , who does this offend?

diplomacy is a tool that uses various means to arrive at a goal , not all of the tools are inoffensive or legal.....

I don't know if it'll offend anyone, that's the point.

Anyway, that's what I think too.

You knew what happened when the USSR signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Germany? There was Operation Barbarossa.

I think Hitler would have done the same to the USA.

It's spelled "Führer" and don't think you'd say "Herr Führer." I suppose it would be a bit like "Mr. President." But that's stupid. I hope nobody does that but us.

Besides, if the letter's in English, it would make loads more sense to say Mr. Hitler rather than use the German honorific. :\

Israel would probably get all pissed off.

In that case, maybe "Der Führer"?

Our President should probably avoid calling Hitler Führer at all.

I just quoted the story directly.

Well, his specific example was some giddy little clever kid who thought he was really something for writing a paper in which he discussed what would have happened "if like...Hitler like..was like, killed in World War I?!?!?11oneone?"

This is actually an interesting thought; many blame the Europeans for appeasing Hitler early on, but tend to leave America out of those accusations.

However, since the Germans seemed to think Mexico a better ally in North America in 1914 (Zimmerman Telegram) it's unlikely America would have trusted the Germans. :D

If the Americans were in a mindset (God I hate that word...) to be friendly with the Germans, they would have started by forgiving some of their debts before Hitler was even in power. By the time Hitler was in a position to be making alliances with the US, the US was firmly implanted on the side of the British and French again. They defeated Germany in the First World War too, don't forget.

In case someone would rather read the short story first. :p
