Title: Bug in fsport 3.1.1 and odd mistake in Freespace
Post by: Soul Reaver on February 20, 2009, 03:47:06 pm
So, I'm replaying Freespace 1 using fsport (and mediavps etc... so pretty).  But on this playthrough I've found two odd things:

Bug: I'm sort of a perfectionist, so I even played the training missions.  However, in Basic Training Stage 4 in the training mission where you are taught how to use countermeasures, I was never once fired upon (so I wasn't really able to 'learn' how to avoid missiles).  I only tried it once though, so I'm not sure how easily this bug is reproducible.  (You can still finish the mission even if you're not fired upon though)

Mistake: The Command Briefing before Act 2 Mission 8 ("Playing Judas", the one where you fly a captured Dragon class ship and have to scan various enemy ships, including the Lucifer) is really odd.  It speaks of "Your investigation of the Lucifer at Antares"... yet oddly enough, you've never even seen the Lucifer before this mission.  Ok, so maybe this particlar part of the Command Briefing was meant to appear in the NEXT mission... except, well, this mission (I think) is set in Deneb, so it STILL wouldn't be right.  Anyone got any ideas what's going on here?

Can happen, if
- the difficulty level is low
- you are too far away from the cruiser
- you are not in the firing arc of the cruiser's missile launcher.

Hmmm, I was playing it on Hard difficulty so the difficulty shouldn't be the cause...

I might have been too far from the cruiser early on, but when it didn't start firing I afterburnered toward it.  I ended up flying all around/over it and made sure that the missile launcher was in view (even went as far as flying right in front of it and taking a potshot at it) but nothing seemed to elicit it to fire.

In sm2-06, "Shell Game", the player was originally going after the Lucifer, not the Eva.

Turrets have 1/7 chance per 'cycle' to fire missiles at player on very easy and 5/7 chance on insane. This means that even with insane difficulty level there is clear chance for the turret not to fire anything at the player. If i recall correctly the cruiser actually tries to fire missiles for only couple of these previously mentioned 'cycles' and then departs. Though the turrets very rarely fire any missiles directly at the player (as spawn type missiles do not use this) this is kinda difficult to fix.

Goober5000: Ah, that makes sense now.  Well, not exactly, but I understand why it's like that now.  Looks like Volition messed up a bit.  :p

Wanderer: Maybe that's why.  I don't remember having this problem in the original Freespace, but it's not like it really breaks anything major.  Was just a bit odd.

I had the issue of my wingmen during the reinforcements and communications training where I couldn't set the order to disarm the target, instead disable was available and the simulator was from that point impassable.

Commander Zane: Huh, that's a weird one.  Luckily that didn't happen to me though - none of the training bugs prevented me from passing the mission.

Volition didn't just mess up there pal  :)
The Capture of the Taranis is probably one of the most illogical missions.

still, FS is great too, only overshadowed by Freespace 2 and WingCommander 3 / 4
