Title: The Tomorrow War - Space Sim - Any hope?
Post by: Nerhesi on February 23, 2009, 12:16:40 pm
Anyone beta'd it or tried or or have any hope for whether it may even reach the same level as Freespace 2?

looks ok... but what's the deal with the blurring thing?? it doesn't look that nice in open space I would bet.

Doesn't look like the game gives the palyer a good oversight. GUI is cluttered with stuff and various effects seem overdone.

the only thing that is nice about this one is the fact that you can travel from space to planetary atmospheres without transitions, that's what freespace is lacking, but it still looks a little rudimentary IMO... and compared to other already started projects like Infinity which will be free (if it's released and I hope it will) this one will have to make an improvement at some topic before getting a lot of attention... well at least attention from me :P

Looks interesting, though, for planetary transitions, I think Infinity is the right direction to take, the downside is that I'm not certain Infinity will be first person.

the demo is a 1st person/3rd person shooter, just like in freespace engine.
Other than featuring some ships for coop controling there will be nothing more, well that's what the site says or what I got when reading the FAQ and so..

which sucks. And the sequel Dark Horizon sucks too.

Recently I've been on the look-out for some other spacesims with newtonian flight model and some true intrasystem navigation which lead me to Tomorrow War

...and back on topic: the game was butchered during the translation. As per the "best traditions of English dubbing" the cast is entirely unconvincing, bland and the worst offense: all in flight dialog is missing! Imagine if Freespace 2 was ported into Russian like this...

Too bad. There are even a number of books that detail the universe the game takes place in. Time for me to finally put those years of learning Russian to use.

Fixed. :p

Yeah, it was kinda empty.

Why does it seem that most space sims suck these days.  :blah:

Ahh well at least we can keep pouring out high quality stuff, for free!

yep.

In the world of space sims, the best things are always free.

Tomorrow War, tried playing it, thought it was a horrible waste.

I own it ... got it about 6 months ago .....

The real-time planetary re-entry is nice, atmospheric flight is good, and the space flight model is good to, but the language translation is absolute shi*t, and some of the plot is ridiculous, however I'm sure that if I could play the original Russian version it would be far better, because the voice acting might make all the difference.

I am looking at image for the game, but then it lead me to other related images of other space sims.

DarkStar One, Freelancer, X2: The Thread, Allegiance, Echelon, X-Wing Alliance and of course the best of the best, Freespace 2.

All of which, I have only heard of 2 of those games.

It... still looks like Freelancer.

Which may or may not be a good thing depending on the individual.

The primary problem with space sims is creating the universe. Space is so... inherently foreign to us that the first... and conceptually most difficult problem, is "divining the universe." If you can't craft a good story, the game will flop no matter how fantastic the engine is. The next problem is the engine.

FS is great because it has a coherent universe with a coherent engine. The engine is coherent because your operational environment is restricted (no planets or gravity to deal with), and thus everything obeys the laws of the environment as defined by the code. This, in its own way, makes the FS universe realistic.

A potential problem... and I'd assume accurate for many games/sims today... is that in attempt to increase the "range" of the universe, the complexity of the code augments. Well, that's obvious... The problem is trying to simulate everything... without devoting the necessary computing power/coding to make it happen. Half-way realistic or half-way arcade isn't anything. You can't have both. You can make realistic easy and arcade hard, but you can't mash the two together. That is really the death knell to an engine in terms of user emersion, as it breaks the laws of the over-all environment; it breaks coherency.

So, until your developers... or you have the initiative... to forge a "soulful," spirited universe which feels real in terms of the story, and design an engine which doesn't make any glaring compromises to itself such that it becomes compromised, you're not going to see the next great space sim.

FS is the best, hands down, because it hit both problems right on the head. And think about it, every great space sim follows the said model of good story, good engine. No exceptions.  :D

By the way, I'm glad to see you're still around, Badman.
