On the freespace oracle and on freespacemod.net, there is an older version of 3 D Exploration ( 1.81 ) for dl available.
Since the releasing company doesn't support it anymore, is there a way to get it running properly for i.e. model conversion ?

It DOES run properly, for 30 days and then asks you to register (buy).
I've done probably over 200+ conversions with it since 2003...
I believe the older incarnation is no longer purchaseable so they direct you to DEEP EXPLORATION.
Same deal 30 days then buy.
Any more discussion would be in the realm of WAREZ (which is forbidden on this board), so just leave it at that...
If you wish we can discuss converters in more detail off board.

I have an old copy of 3DX back when it was free, and I still use it. But you'd have to read the EULA to see if it specifies an expiration date for it. CrazyBump, for instance, was free in Beta but explicitly said that the free license would expire as soon as the pay version came out.
It's an interesting discussion, though, and I think it should stay open. Warez threads don't get deleted unless someone is specifically asking for a download site for commercial software, or someone is posting links to same. Since you don't want Deep Exploration but the old, free 3D Exploration it's fair game IMO.

Here's the link to the old version (http://pjfoliver.googlepages.com/3dexplor.exe), with the relevant portion of the EULA:
Why you need to register your copy of 3D Exploration ?
The current version does not contain any limitations and the registered version differs only by absence of the UNREGISTERED text. Registered version also shows your name and email as the registered user.
If you register your copy 3D Exploration you will help us in development of new versions of 3D Exploration. 3D Exploration is trialware and you must register the program to continue using it after 30 day trial period (although it doesn't expire, actually). The registration fee is only $40. Once registered, you remain a registered user for this and all future versions of 3D Exploration. Registered users will receive information about latest versions of the program via e-mail.
All problems, which will arise for you and all your wishes will be considered first of all.

Deep View however, is free and can open and view many of the formats that 3D Exp. could.
