Title: Nebulae
Post by: Locutus of Borg on March 04, 2009, 04:33:01 pm
I've played through the entire FS campaign and am starting Silent Threat and every time I launch a mission, all I see is a black starfield, but in screenshots I see detailed nebulae etc.

I am also noticing this in other mods; is there some custom flag I need to put in, I have all features set to on in the launcher.

Check your background effects settings in the Options dialog.  Even if you're not running mediaVPs, you should still see the retail background bitmaps.

I am running fsport through the fsport_Mediavps folder

and all of the bars in options --> details are maxed out

So what should I do; this really does kill atmosphere.

When I play, I can see stars, but just a starfield otherwise; except in TVWAR where I can also see the planets.

upload your fsport mod.ini file, or paste its contents.

Also, I've noticed that some of the weapons look improved and awesome (like the avenger)

and some look like they did in basic FS1 (like the Prometheus)

Er, it seems you're trying to run the port mediavps as a primary mod? nnnoononon. Copy this to the bottom of your fsport mod.ini

[multimod]
secondrylist = (whatever the name of your fsport mediavp folder is, without parentheses), mediavps;

Save that, and then select fsport itself in the launcher, not its mediavps.

And thanks for the weapons comment, I did most of them (the primaries, that is)  :)
As for the simple ones, they're fine. Galemp wanted to keep some simple.

Hm... Strange. you definately have the mediavps there as a mod, so... I don't think you could be missing lightspeeds nebulae.
Check your options, are nebulae/planets turned on?
You and goob went through that already. Graah, this makes no sense.

my .exe with flags (It's a mess)

C:\Freespace Open\fs2_open_3_6_10r-20081210_r4989.exe -mod fsport,fsport_mediavps, mediavps -spec -glow -env -mipmap -nomotiondebris -missile_lighting -normal -3dshockwave -dualscanlines -rearm_timer -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload  -ambient_factor 35 -ogl_spec 20 -spec_exp 15 -spec_point 1.2 -spec_static 1.5 -spec_tube 1.5

The contents of my mediavps folder

MV_advanced

Maybe do a fresh d/l of the mediavps folder only?

You can always try redownloading them. I'll seed for you with my ultra insane bandwidth.

but I'm using Tur(k)ey's (xD) installer to download the mediavps to another folder; when they will then be grafted into my current FSO folder.

Of course the old mediavps folder is backed up :)

read up, do you see a problem?

I replaced the mediavps with the mv_Core (I kept mv_advanced) and mv_music

no change.

When I run the launcher as an admin, the detail looks better, but my problem isn't fixed.

ALSO when I run FSPORT, the ship graphics are a lot worse than when I run FSPORT_mediavps.

Title: Re: Nebulae

noob lol

Open the Launcher.
Click "Browse".
Find an .exe file with a file name starting with "fs2_open_3_6_10d", click it and click "Open".
Click "Apply".
Click "Run".
When you get to the Main Hall, quit.
There now is a file called fs2_open.log in your \freespace2\data\ folder. Post it here. Preferrably as an attachment or by wrapping "code" tags around it.

Code: [Select]
  -mod fsport,fsport_mediavps,1. \fsport\ is loaded before \fsport_mediavps\ and this is wrong. \fsport_mediavps\ must be loaded first.
2. \fsport_mediavps\ requires \mediavps\ but that folded (or more importantly the MediaVPs) are nowhere to be seen.
Title: Re: Nebulae

FSPORT was my selected mod when running the debug

what do you suggest I do ?
Title: Re: Nebulae
Post by: Jeff Vader on March 05, 2009, 12:34:35 am
1. Remove the entire "secondarylist" line from the mod.ini in your \fsport\ folder. It is meant that if you choose the FSPort folder as a mod, you only get FSPort. Nothing fancy 'n shiny.
2. Make sure you have the 3.6.10 MediaVPs. Put them into a folder called mediavps within your \freespace2\ folder.
3. Make sure that the mod.ini in your fsport_mediavps folder says
Code: [Select]
[launcher]
modname      = FSPort MediaVPs v3.1.1;
image255x112 = fsport-mediavps.bmp;
infotext     = Freespace Port Media VPs.  Requires FSPort 3.1.1 and standard Media VPs 3.6.10.;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,170.0.html;

[multimod]
secondarylist = fsport,mediavps
4. Select the fsport_mediavps folder as a mod and play.

Actually, since your log failed, could you just tell us what MediaVPs you have right now? Accurate file names, please.
Title: Re: Nebulae
Post by: Locutus of Borg on March 05, 2009, 12:37:53 am
mv_advanced
mv_complete
mv_music
Title: Re: Nebulae
Post by: Jeff Vader on March 05, 2009, 12:39:57 am
K. Put MV_Complete and MV_Music to \freespace2\mediavps\ . That way you will have a full set of MediaVPs. If things continue to fail, run a debug build again, but this time make sure that the mediavps folder is also used. That way we can verify whether or not your MediaVPs are corrupt.

Your MV_Complete seems to have 5253 files. Therefore it is not corrupt. Excellent.

I probably wasn't clear enough, but you can safely remove MV_Advanced. MV_Complete contains everything except the music.

So now what; there's got to be a problem since I don't get nebulae in anything.

Sure, I get planets in TVWAR and Derelict, but no nebulae or coloring to the starfields at all.

Basically it would seem that you're still failing to use the MediaVPs with FSPort. The only thing you can do is to check that the folder name specified in the fsport_mediavps mod.ini is the same as the name of your mediavps folder. After that you should check that the folder name specified in the fsport_mediavps mod.ini is the same as the name of your mediavps folder.

The folder referencing is correct

No. If you select fsport_mediavps as the active mod and the fsport_mediavps' mod.ini's secondarylist line says fsport,mediavps , the loading order is correct.

Just for teh kicks, do that, run a debug build and post the log.

Get rid of your primarylist
Change the secondarylist to read

In terms of ST:R, I'd rather say:

- select No MOD from the Launcher
- add the following to the Custom flags field under the Features tab:
Code: [Select]
-mod fsport_mediavps,str,fsport,mediavps

second one is running fsport_str

Where are the skyboxes contained though? All I really want is the skyboxes to load instead of just having a large star and a starfield.

Note that FSPort, DoP and many others don't use skyboxes, just background elements like planets and retail/Lightspeed's nebulae.

Perchance make sure you have the newest FSPort missions .vp as well.

I'll do that, but I really must apologize; I've made a fool of myself.

I've been using Silent Threat as a test to see if the backgrounds were working; and after I decided to play through it last night, I realized I wasn't playing ST:R

:(

I've wasted all of your time and I am REALLY SORRY.

EDIT: What's the cheat to show all missions in the techroom so I can compare what I see to the screenshots in the release thread?

EDIT: Nvm got it, and the nebulae is there :D
