...SOOOOOOOOOOO... now that there's a possible serious chance of a FS3 (at least once RF:G is out)... What do you think?
I'm thinking yes. No matter what. And then we have split continuity for all existing campaigns.
-
As long as it's backwards compatible.
If they screw it up, I will be pissed. But they won't, since they're :v:. FAITH.
-
... now that there's a possible serious chance of a FS3...
Is there? Link to source?
And I'd like to see an FS3, for PC.
-
The topic just below this one.
-
As I mentioned in the other thread, the possibility of Freespace 3 brings up mixed feelings in me. If the lifeblood of a game's playerbase is the ability to alter and mold the game to new and different forms, then my biggest concern is that V will kill a new Freespace game's ability to be modified or altered.
That and if they make it a console exclusive I will manifest my vengenace onto a dinner plate, freeze it, and then beat V's development team to death with it.
-
It would be a console-first game with a PC port. The realities of the business these days almost ensure that.
The realities of the business also almost certainly preclude it from ever happening at all. But who knows? We can hope.
I'd play a (quality) 360 FS3 if it wasn't horribly consolized and if they continued the story. My concern is that they wouldn't want to jump in right after FS2, knowing that most of the console base hasn't played the previous entries.
-
Only if it's Snufflepaugus.
EDIT: Srsly, it'd be cool if they could make one that's as good as 1 and 2. By that I mean the storyline is coherent and flowing with the previous two, gameplay is just as fun, etc. But otherwise, they shouldn't bother.
-
But is there any serious mention of this anywhere else? Any press release concerning ongoing development from either V or THQ? All I'm seeing is the short news story that sparked this discussion, but nothing else. I'm guessing this is more a misunderstanding on the part of the original author than any real project...
-
I'm going to go on record here and just flat out say that I'm certain that the author of that article made a mistake. If [V] were working on FS3, we'd know about it. There's no more hope now than there was a month ago, or six months or whatever.
I could be wrong, of course, but I don't think I am.
-
I've done some searching, and I've come across 2+ articles that say the same thing as the one in the other thread. Red Herring? Maybe, but for now we will just have to wait...

Could you point me to those?
The day of judgment is coming...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=volition+layoffs&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
It's interesting how there are other articles that say different.
-
All of those seem to be remixes of the original article. No mention of FreeSpace here, move along.
-
The studio is also responsible for the FreeSpace and Summoner series, as well as comic book license The Punisher.
The article does not say if they're working on a sequel or not.
Currently, Volition is working on the sequel to Red Faction called Red Faction: Guerrilla as well as the FreeSpace and Summoner franchises. The company also is working on the development of a game-based The Punisher comic book series.
Who to trust?

The article claims they're working on a Punisher game, but the only evidence I can find for a new Punisher game is a Playstation Network title being made by some mob called "Zen Studios".
IMO, the story about the QA department was thrown out to the reporter, who knew [V] from Saints Row and not much else. He then got to three paragraphs without hitting his target length, so he jumped on google or Wikipedia for some background and chucked it into the story. Hell, the basic premise of the article is misleading, if not downright inaccurate (http://www.volition-inc.com/News/2009/3#VolitionlayoffsUhno). So please, don't get your hopes up too high for the moment. If FS3 was in the works, or even a realistic possibility, we'd know. Certainly we'd know before some random reporter at Fudzilla (whoever they are) "broke" the news as a fourth paragraph side note. Even if the games news websites found out before we did, it'd still be worth a story all of its own, more than the effective footnote it was given in this article.

*yawns at the thread*
Sorry, but srsly...

You never cease to amaze me, Titan.

You never cease to amaze me, Titan.
I try my best. :D
Not my fault I spend an hour a day on that weird little bed with the guy that takes notes. (Seriously, I do. I hate it.)
And according to the article from the Volition website, it mentions they're keeping the testers, to work on RFg, and several unnamed projects :drevil:
-
Which is industry-speak for "We have some concepts we're working on, but we won't tell you about them until we know we can deliver something worth your while". A continuation of FS is less likely than, say, Summoner 3. And, please remember, that neither THQ nor [V] own the FS-Franchise at this point.
-
And, please remember, that neither THQ nor [V] own the FS-Franchise at this point.
We don't know that for sure. In fact I remember some Interplay employee saying that they did't in fact have the rights.
-
Well, according to gog it still belongs to Interplay....Anyway, if [V] acquired the rights, I'm sure they'd make it known.... :nervous:
-
i hope to god theres no FS3 would make all this work go to waste maybe.
-
Weird that there would be this kind of suspicious threads turning up when Gen Disc has turned to page 666.
The END is truly nigh! :nervous: :shaking:
-

Did you enjoy making it and playing it? Then it wasnt a waste.
-
we should all agree on this one I guess... if there's got to be an FS3, then it should come right from the same people responsible from the 1st and the 2nd and no one else.
If they make it, everyone here will play it and then some will love it some will hate it for sure.
From my part I would really love to see where the original story was headed, even if it turns out to be crappy.. I really want to know.
-
TBH the storyline probably wouldn't go anywhere. At least, it wouldn't have much to do with the first 2 since they came out a decade ago and the current gaming generation wouldn't have played them.
-
Snufflespace 3 sounds pretty awesome
-

isn't the original staff that made FS1 & FS2 still part of the volition crew? If so... then maybe someone over there might have a pritty good idea on how to keep the story going.
-
My concern is that they might revert to FS1's relatively simple story structure. Who was the one guy who contributed most of the FS2 story? He seems to be the key.
(Now, granted, he might have done FS1 as well.)
-
I think they should make a frikkin awesome cutscene with snatches of voice from the first 2 games, allowing players to get the gist of what's happening.
-
I agree with titan. And snail, link? (your last post, on page 1)
-
As long as it has FRED, or similar modding tools which usually only come for PC only, I am happy :).
-
According to Interplay's third quarter SEC filings (http://idea.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1057232/000117091808000642/fm10q-093008.txt), they are trying to get funding to make the Fallout MMO. No mention of Freespace anywhere in the report. I don't think they plan to work on it any time soon. But please, continue speculating. It's fun to watch :)
-
Four words: don't know, don't care.
-
Four words: don't know, don't care.
I would've thought you would have more of an opinion on this. Nonetheless
FS3 is still FS3
-
While I'd definitely play FS3, it probably wouldn't last as long as FSopen...
-
I would've thought you would have more of an opinion on this.
I won't simply because I find that things are currently quite all right. Our community's attached by the admins' duct tape, we've got Swantz and his mirror site freespacemods.net, the chat room's being run by chief1983, and Wanderer patrols the Wiki. There really isn't much to ask for from FreeSpace.

I see your point there. The only thing I'd honestly want at the moment from V is the rest of the storyline. Fulfill my 'Inner Child'
-
If Volition do make FS3 it won't be the same guys who made the first two so really who cares anymore?

If Volition do make FS3 it won't be the same guys who made the first two so really who cares anymore?
Well it would be, I mean apparently most of the dev crew is still at V, including the writers, or one of them at least, if there were more.
-
How about V used the fso engine with maybe a few modifcations (later released back to the community)
that would be a cheap way for them to create the game
-
Unless it comes with FRED3, no.
And it won't come with FRED3.
-
Initially that's exactly how I felt, but now I think I wouldn't mind either way. If it came with a FRED3, we get a new engine to mess around with. If it didn't, this community would probably continue under its own steam.
What I'm more concerned about is whether Volition is even still capable of making a game that would do this series justice. I'm sure the company has changed a lot since 1999, and I would love a good continuation to this story, but while I'd love to be proved wrong nothing about their recent work indicates they can still handle the fairly solemn kind of story that Freespace demands. I'd also be worried that they would just reboot the franchise like they seem to be doing with the new Red Faction.
That aside, my answer's a cautious yes. I can't pretend I wouldn't be hopeful. But I'm not going to get invested in this until I hear an official announcement.
-

... and that's a very good thing.
I don't think its possible that V would continue FS. They're more likely to start a completely new series.

Time to ignore every non FS3 comment.

You realize they're not making FS3, right?

If it's possible to create a FreeSpace 3 Port to FS2 project, then yes...FS3 would be nice...

He was being sarcastic. :p

Why would you say that? I did a quick scan of the dozens of people who work at Volition and many of the same people (including some of the key folks) are still working there. Adam Pletcher, Dave Baranec and Jason Scott are just a few that spring to mind. The Volition crew is a pretty tightly nit bunch and it seems like many of them have stuck there for a good long while.

You have to be careful assuming stuff like that with Ephili sometimes... :p

Quite a few of the smaller and quality-over-quantity studios still have a core team of guys that have worked together for a decade or more. :v:, for example, still keeps most of their "oldbies". I think the major things we'd have to hope for, if it comes in 1 year or in 10 years, is that they have the same writer and the same artistic directors.

Once there was a company called interplay that vanished into the night with kappa wing. Some say that a lot more than kappa wing vanished that day.
We held onto our butts that day that interplay left and have survived dutifully with the scp and mvp.
THEN ONE DAY!!!
Derek smart came along one day and proposed an awesome idea for a future fs game full of...
...lady shaver using thong wearing hairy bastards...
...rampant sex of colossal size and proportions...
...with in-game advertising...
...which would have been this.
The hlpbb gave this to derek smart.

And now the tale continues with news straight from V just to gather hits for their website.
-
Noooooooo... not the picture dammit.
-
bah, it's not the picture so chill out.
-
Yes it's the colossus's down time. You all deserve it for a rather mediocre thing V pulled just to troll to get hits on their website.
EDIT: Guess which picture you think has not been gimped?

What are you on about? V didn't do anything of the sort.

TBH I had assumed people would have moved on after 10 years (either to other companies or up the ladder, so to speak).
What where you doing 10 years ago ? I assume higher education, but obviously you've moved on since then.
-
Even if :v: makes FS3 it won't be what I want it to be.
It's like Episode III of Star Wars. Sure, the movie was good. But it just didn't have it.

Thing is...I think they have it pretty good there at Volition. I'm undoubtedly sure that the hours are long (judging by the pool table and numerous pizza boxes I saw stacked up :)) but I think the people there are quite satisfied. Geographically there aren't many game developers nearby either so I'm sure thats a secondary factor as well.
Ten years ago...mmm I was still in high school. Seems like an eternity :)

Well fine, the other news people did then in the stuff not on V website.
The way i see if with all of these fs3 threads going around in near repetition. This thread was free game.

I was... 8 years old ten years ago o.O;

Snuffleupagus is years old joke with HLP polls that I'm really surprised you haven't noticed until now, and Elmo is a joke about the joke, I guess.
-
Then what is Snufflepaugus? ;)
-
Then what is Snufflepaugus? ;)
It's the story that i presented.
-
This is Snuffleupagus:

Then what is Snufflepaugus? ;)
Oh HLP, Snuffleupagus is the same as "don't care". If that is correct, then please bear this in mind because this term seems relatively common.

Yeah, I wasn't even around when the term came into use here, but I learned pretty fast. It's ....
everywhere..........
-
Actually, now I wonder what was the first poll to has that as an option?
-
Where the hell did elmo come from?
-
Where the hell did elmo come from?
Jim Henson.
-
And Elmo is a joke of a joke? still hard to understand. How does it apply to a poll? If I selected Elmo to this topic, for example, what would I be saying?
You'd be saying nothing.
It's there as a joke. It serves no purpose other than to be there (or possibly to be funny, but really it's more random than funny, and randomness has no correlation to being funny).
-
Why are we misusing muppets for randomness anyway?
-
Probably same reason why i spammed this thread. Even though i was still on topic.

Colonol Dekker Fan club"In randomness and hilarity we trust"

Something can be random and funny. However, something being random does not automatically make it funny, and vice versa.
For example, saying randomly "Cheese!" is not funny. Just random.

I think that's why the quote says "In randomness AND hilarity we trust". Sorry if that was not clear in my post. It wasn't a go at you, just relevant to what you were saying! Snuffleupagus was funny at the time but it got old a long time ago!
-
For the record, I didn't add the Elmo thing...
-
Probably an administrator.
/me looks at Goober5000.
-
well this thread is derailed. lockiong
-
I added neither Snuffleupagus nor Elmo to this poll.
And cheese is always funny. :D
-
of course you didnt add elmo, i did. just because the creator of a poll chooses to add a certain fuzzy elephant to his poll (or some other admin/moderator beats me to it), doesnt mean that my privlages as a moderator did not apply. you call it a joke, i call it a statement
:p
for the record i voted for snuffy :D
