Title: Just noticed something (supernova related)
Post by: General Battuta on March 08, 2009, 11:02:03 pm
I'm sure this has been spotted more than once before, but it was novel to me.

There's often been debate about the group of Sathanas juggernaughts that remained behind to be destroyed by the supernova instead of jumping away. This group of ships goes black shortly before the event and is apparently vaporized.

Some have suggested that these ships simply lost power due to some kind of equipment failure. But it appears they actually made a choice to remain behind, and that this was a voluntary and necessary part of the supernova process.

As the other juggernaughts disengage their green-ripply-weapons and jump away, you can see that the Sathanas juggernaughts in question are still maintaining their own green ripply spheroid things. Perhaps they're completing the final step of the supernova; perhaps they're a safety mechanism to make completely sure everything goes well.

It appears that these ships weren't left behind by accident. It was -- perhaps -- an intentional part of the process. Very interesting.

Also, it draws an interesting parallel to the endings in which Alpha 1 chooses to remain behind.

I never assumed equipment failure. I always assumed it was on purpose.

Right, me too. I just recall there being a mildly heated debate (I think Trashman was involved?) a while back.

"Chooses to remain behind".

Man, Petrarch really knows how to make dead people look good.

Alpha One: "DAMMIT YOU STUPID ARES MOVE FASTER GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU STUPID ARGO ITS COMING FOR ME THE FIRE AND THE FLAMES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH pof"

Petrarch: "...so, he decided to stay behind to protect the civilians."

Comm Officer: "But..."

Petrarch: "The heroic commanding officer of my Aquitane's premier squadron, the Blue Lions, chose to remain behind."

Comm Officer: "...yes, sir."

Same with General Battuta, I always interpreted the scene as the last group of Sathanas juggernauts holding the gateway for the the other juggernauts ensuring that they go to their unknown destination safely.

Perhaps there had only skeleton crew on board or the process fully automated; I highly doubt that the Shivans would sacrifice 9 fully crewed juggernauts to their deaths.

I thought that the Sathanas juggernauts that remained behind were hardy enough to withstand a supernova. They probably jumped shortly after Capella exploded.

I still say practical joke.

Bob the Shivan: Yep, that's it, 13, 56, and 78 keep up the rippling. We'll just turn ours off.

Timmy the Shivan: Alright, what's the cool thing you wanted to show me again?

Bob the Shivan: You'll see, soon enough....alright guys, NOW!

*all the other jugs warp out*

Bob: HAHAHAHAHA SEE YA

Timmy: Wait...what? Oh crap its gonna explode! Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap jump out!

*jug powers down*

Timmy: .....

Doubt it. But maybe.

When I last did Apocalypse, I was flying an Ares. "COMEE ONNNNNNNNNNN YOU USELESS PIECE OF JUNK!"

I thought it was impossible to jump out. It took me a long time to work out you had to go to the node.

I thought the Shivans were some kind of vast race that spanned system upon system, so the loss of a Sath wasn't really a huge thing for them

Probably not since the planets were destroyed.  Maybe they were close enough to whatever subspace event occured to warp out, but I always figured that they stayed behind to stabalize the "gate" long enough for the majority to get through.

I seriously doubt a Sath would've survived a supernova...

If a Sath can get destroyed by the Colossus, even if it had no active BFReds, and a Supernova releases as much energy as its entire galaxy when it explodes, then I think it (they) would become H+  plasma. Then again, in the video, the corvettes survived the first wave, but not the second.

The first wave seemed more like a... heat wave. O_o

[skepticism]And that would be weaker..?[/skepticism]

The first wave was probably the concussion/shock wave, rippling the place, then the second wave was the full force, heat etc
Title: Re: Just noticed something (supernova related)
Post by: Androgeos Exeunt on March 09, 2009, 06:59:43 am
The first wave is all the heat. The next one is probably pure power.

Post by: Pred the Penguin on March 09, 2009, 08:59:28 am
The first wave is all the next. The next one is probably pure energy.
*fixed*

Anyways... second wave was probably "....The explosion expels much or all of a star's material[2] at a velocity of up to a tenth the speed of light, driving a shock wave[3] into the surrounding interstellar medium...." - Wiki

First was probably for dramatic effect. XD

The "pure power" bit was deliberate. The part where I messed up was "next". I actually meant to say that the first wave is probably all the heat on the sun's exterior.

 Same for me the first time
The second time I waited at the node till the last moment, had 4 seconds left and jumped. But as I was jumping with 3 seconds left I somehow was still considered dead. third time is a charm, jumped Well ahead of the wave.
'decided to stay behind' my ass.

I forgot to download/install the movies, so my game just died when the supernova triggered.
Yeah, I kinda ruined the ending for myself.

I have a funny idea...
What if there is sg very-very-very-very-important stuff for the Shivans in Sol? They tried to go there and they failed. Now their forces were cut off from the GTVA space so they've created this green stuff.

(Would someone make a green subspace mod, by the way?)

There is a modded Sath that has a "weapon" that displays a green subspace warp in game, however, I would like to see one that looks like the one in the cutscene, complete with the "flowing down the arms" effect. It'd probably be hard to make though :doubt:.

Yes and no. You can animate parts of models now.

Well, for starters, the Horus now has flaps that rotate by ninety degrees when you hold down the afterburner. You need to switch to chase or external view to see it.

No idea. Snail told me about it last week and I tested it out on either r5083 or r5097 two days ago.

Yeah, sorta like how when a nuke goes off, there's the initial blast of radiation which is instant, and then the shockwave hits, and everyone (and everything) else is blown away.

Only in atmosphere though.

Yeh, what with the shockwave coming from the superheating of air due to the radiation burst.

The bolts energy (electricity looking) travelling down the arms.

They stayed behind or had some failures. Making sure the nova went off or that the other sathys could get out. Tho i dobut if it took all of them to start, that a handful couldent stop it...even temporarily.
Maby they are repairing the nearby subspace. The green wave looks like a subspace portal.

And the first time i did the last mission, i went for the node. Didnt get tehre in time. The other times i screwed the missino and stayed by the node, or went early... wouldent let me actualy get out. Had to redu till i died or tried to jump. And i love the Ares fighter. Its not stupid at all. It was my first pick in mulitplayer.

The Ares will always be my first pick in multiplayer. I love that fighter far too much, even though its slow speed meant that I didn't jump out in Apocalypse on time.

Great secondary capacities, and with the advent of long range anti-bomber missiles, they're my friend. :)

I admire them, but they'll be the death of you in a dogfight, which is where most of my missions end up. They're okay if there isn't more than one-two shivans on your six. When you tend to charge into shivan formations pretty much rubber-banding the trigger only to fight your way out of eight maras sinking their teeth into your ass, the Ares isn't for you.

Against bombers though, that's when they really shine.

EDIT: The AI doesn't seem to use Trebs very often when I observe them in the closing missions of the retail campaign.

Because Trebuchets have both "Huge" and "Bomber+" in their flags, the AI never uses Trebuchets.

I think it was done for balance. Trebs can take out most fighters in one or two hits. You wouldn't have any dogfights when everyone dies at 2000m.
