Hi,
Unusual for me to post such threads, but here, I got FreeSpace1 ( RETAIL FreeSpace 1 ), and ran into a couple of problems. First one being black squares around some stuff ( like the sun ), and the second being the capital ship rendering. Uhh... I can "see through" the bigger ships in-game ( fine in FRED1, but not in the tech room. not sure if it's the same in-game as in the tech room, but I was told it's the same ). In other words: I can see the other sides of the ships. What to do?
-
you mean kind-of like in FSO's labview, and you set the ships transperent? Or when you set 'no Z-buffer'?
-
you are using the retail exe and files?? what I mean is if you are running the retail version (completely retail in a separate folder and such or you are running it as a mod).
-
It's like when 'no z-buffer' is set.
-
I think there is no solution for those problems. I had them too. I just ignored them; FS1 is such an old game anyway.
-
Go out and buy an older graphics card! It may sound like crummy advice, and I don't really mean for you to take it seriously, but I never had problems with FS1 until I installed it on a much newer computer.
-
Hum. Run it in compatibility mode for Windows 98. If you got it from Good Old Games, go bug them, as I don't think anyone here can help you with retail FS1 debugging.
-
If it's from GOG then you shouldn't need compatability settings since they worked on making their games work on EVERYTHING.
-
Buy FreeSpace 2, then download FSO and FSPORT
:)

It ain't the same.

Oof, forgot about that.
High-res textures, FreeSpace 2 nebulae, Lucifer has beams instead of SSLs.
Time to buy FreeSpace off GOG then.
-
The interface and a lot of other stuff are also different. I have FSPort, I played the FS1 campaign only through FSPort until now. It's a lot different from FSPort. Afterwards I'll replay retail FS2.
-
FSPort 3.1 has the new (old?) interface mostly ported over... but yeah, I agree, there's nothing like the original.
-
IMO, the slight "retro" feel of it actually adds depth to the overall FreeSpace experience and feel. No reason to skip it just because Port exists.
-
The interfaces look a lot different, though that's probably the low screen resolution size talking.
However, does anyone remember this blue line in front of the Apollo's canopy?

It's been a very long time since I actually played the Retail FreeSpace 1, but I don't remember it being there.
-
It's only like that because it's at LOD2million or whatever. Change your model detail setting.
-
It was at maximum. :wtf:
Oh interesting, even GOG's copy suffers this transparent Destroyer issue.
Hey ShadowGorrath, let's go bug GOG about it. ;7
-
It was at maximum. :wtf:
It shouldn't be showing such a low LOD at that distance...
-
98 compatability sometimes fixes it, but i've taken to running it in virtualmachine if i need to make it look right
-
It was at maximum. :wtf:

I bet that really is the best FS1 could offer :P

Didn't FS1 offer glow maps under software rendering?
-
no, it had a ship table entry line that would make any number of single colors on the texture glow
-
It did? I don't remember that... I remember something weird which I never had any idea what it meant, though...

Nope that'd be LOD1 or 2 or something lower....
LOD0 looked better than that.

That only works in GLIDE mode though.
As for the grahpic glitches, I also encountered that in D3D mode on some newer cards. You could try running the game with a GLIDE wrapper.
-
How can I do that?

True. The muddy graphics of Fs1 get lost in the translation. Retail was a lot darker and had a bleaker atmosphere, but one can remedy that with launcher settings.
FS1 was one of the first computer games I ever played, and I think that FSPort is very authentic, especially with the interface art ported over at long last.
