Title: Categories and Sub-Categories
Post by: Snail on March 22, 2009, 06:19:05 am
Err... If an article is in a sub-category of a category, should it include both the category and the sub-category or just the sub-category?

For example Warzone is a Cold Element campaign, so it's placed in the Cold Element category, which is a sub-category of user-made campaigns. Should Warzone have both Category:Cold Element and Category:User-made Campaigns, or only Category:Cold Element?

The way I see it, it should be in both, so that it appears in the article listing of the main category. If it's only in one, then it will disappear from the main listing, which is a pointless bother really.

IMO they should have both - when I replaced Warzone's "User-made Campaigns" category with "Cold Element" earlier today I made a mistake. It's quite inconclusive to let user made campaigns disappear from the main category only because they're part of a separate continuity. :)

The weird thing is Wikipedia does it with only one, which I find quite frankly daft.

Another reason why Wikipedia sucks 10 pounds of arse.

I agree that for example Cold Element must have both categories, but what about Inferno's main Inferno category and its Inferno Ships category? If an article is in the Inferno Ships category, isn't it more than obvious that it's part of Inferno continuity?

No because many Inferno ships are used in other mods. Inferno makes use of many ships coming from other mods as well. Let's say that the Inferno Ships category is more a hybrid.

Query: does the wiki in any place differentiate between models (*.pof) and ships (table entries and the model or models that go along with them)?

Also, why not just have a "featured in..." for user-made ships/weapons, and a "featured ships:" and "featured weapons:" for campaigns?

I bring this up mainly because of what Mobius just said.

When I set more than one category for a ship, I get weird results like the following...

Too many templates. I don't see why we need all that.

I'm afraid normal Wiki contributors can't edit them...is it up to the Administrators?

Regular members can edit templates. It's not normally about privileges, but advanced Wiki code knowledge (and some HTML).

And by the way, can you tell me precisely why you think the Imset's page is weird? Just to make sure we won't start talking about two different things.

Because there are two templates trying to say the same thing:

All information related to GVB Imset is non-canon

The following information has not been confirmed by Volition and is therefore not canon for the FreeSpace universe.

The first one is intended to be for Inferno ships the other is a general reminder. I think we can get rid of the "Inferno is non-canon" template.
