Wow this place has changed since last time I was around.....2003 I think.
So what's new with FS around here and how much trouble is it to get things set back up to play a bit?
*Misses his old mods....must dig through old hardrives.*
-
Welcome back, and happy birthday again! :)
(Warlock came here following a Happy Birthday PM sent by me :D)
-
Read this. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61606.0.html)
Your brain will implode from the MediaVP goodness. (And play Silent Threat: Reborn.)
-
Haha, wow I remember you. Now I feel old. :p
Installation is pretty easy now, though still with a few kinks. Turey's installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) handles pretty much everything fine with two major exceptions I'm aware of:
1) There is a corrupt Media VP it downloads, resulting in the most bizzare errors in-game. I would recommend not installing them at all using the launcher and just get them from the 3.6.10 mediaVPs release thread here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,58230.0.html) which has instructions on getting the latest FSO build (if you haven't already).
2) Silent Threat: Reborn (A MUST PLAY in terms of quality, and probably the main FS based mod that you may remember from your last visit that has since been released. ;) ) requires a little bit of fiddling with the bits and pieces to get it working correctly. A full instruction set on what to do can be found in the release post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,59120.0.html), though the mod itself can be initially downloaded through the launcher during setup.
And finally: Welcome Back. :D
-
diaspora and shadows of lyat are definitely worth checking out too, though they're still a ways off
diaspora has its forums here, SoL is over at game-warden.com though I think they have some screenies in the celebration of freespace thread
-
I don't know you, Warlock, but I've seen your posts in the Classics. :p
...I think. :nervous:
And if you gave yourself that Custom Title, you can no longer change it; only the admins can, and they usually do it to make fun out of you.
/me looks at Goober5000.
-
I've always been able to change my own title.
-
 :p
-
Welcome back Warlock!
-
Thanks for the welcome back everyone :) Looks like I've got a lot of reading, downloading, and installing to catch up on. Ohhh geeez...I don't even think I have a flightstick that uses a USB LOL Wow!
As for the title, I believe it was Setekh that set me up with that waaaaaay back in the day.
Still good to see this place alive and kicking, I remember when it first got set up......yea.....that old. ......classics.....*sigh*
Ok last "Old fart" question.... Do we still have an online multiplayer set up or is it pretty much host and pass out IP info or Lan ?
Good old Squadwars ....the last true online MP I enjoyed :| Most crap these days is just that ....crap. If you're not an ace or sniper....some 13yro is gonna "pwn" you. :nervous: :eek2:
-
Full multiplayer support has been restored including the PXO Lobby. Squadwars will be making a come back in the future as well.
-
Ok last "Old fart" question.... Do we still have an online multiplayer set up or is it pretty much host and pass out IP info or Lan ?
You're in luck; the Source Code Project established a service called FS2NetD as a replacement for PXO. This article (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Multiplayer_Getting_Started_Guide) should have all the info you need to get you started. The Multiplayer board should have a few threads with info about people hosting servers or weekly games.
And if you were a Squadwar fan back in the day, you might want to check out this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,60299.0.html), to provide suggestions for its eventual triumphant return. :)
-
I'm certain that almost everyone who knows how to get on FS2NetD will jump right into SquadWar the moment it's up. I only got a copy of FS2 after Interplay went bust and Outrage and Volition were acquired by THQ, so I've never tried SquadWar before.
If you want to get into Multiplayer the modern way, Warlock, detailed and concise instructions may be found on the FreeSpace Wiki at http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Multiplayer_Getting_Started_Guide. I know it's both because I followed the instructions to the letter and it worked like a charm.
BAH! YOU BEAT ME TO IT, MONGOOSE! :hopping:
-
I've always been able to change my own title.
Prove it. :p
-
Awesome....well as long as the "Call Center Fairies" don't screw my weekend up worth more silly broken doors,...I'll have a busy weekend hunting down my old copy of FS2 and getting everything up to speed :)
Once we get SW back up and running....looks like I'll have to get DA back into action and see if we can reclaim the #1 slot again :yes2:
-
Ah welcome back Warlock
-
I've always been able to change my own title.
Prove it. :p
Hmmm you're right. I thought that personal text was the custom title area. Anyway, mc hammer is dope **** man.
I wish i had tried squadwar back in the day. Fs2 really was released as two games, and i didn't even bother with the squadwar part of it at all.

Warlock is not a valid target. He's been here for years, and the administration hasn't been changed (much).

"INVALID TARGET! HOLD YOUR FIRE!"
*Killer Whale's jumpdrives engage*
-
Great to see HLP's still pretty much the same, almost makes a guy feel like he hasn't been away for most of a decade. :D
-
Ok tad confused here.....do I follow the idiots guide thread OR the 3.6.10 Media VPs thread to get every thing set up? ?
arrgh ---being a noob again sucks lol
-
Well, the "Noob's Guide" appears to have all the stuff in the 3.6.10 MVPs release thread...not 100% sure.
-
After some more cross reading it does appear to both contain the same ....except the "Nightly Build" part....so I'll wing it and see what happens :)
Just a bit excited at the moment....I actually found my FS2 cds in my storage (read piled wall to wall to near ceiling) junk room and so far they actually still work. lol
Course I'll have to suffer through using a gamepad for a few nights until I get out and find me a new flight stick. Hmmm maybe it's time to finally get that Cyborg Force Feedback stick I had my eye on awhile back.
In case I haven't mentioned it....God bless you guys for keeping this alive and getting to the point you're at. I honestly didn't release how much I missed it and how much I've longed for a damn good space combat sim since FS2.
*Edit* WHOOOFrakingHOOO My cds still work and I got FS2 installed again :)
-
The nightly build part is pretty necessary to run the MVPs.
Though at this point, getting the 3.6.10 RC1 might be a better idea.
-
[noob mode]So that's the newest version of MV_Complete? Or am I missing something here?[/noob mode]
Also have the squad logo parameters changed or is it still the tiny PCX format limits?
-
3.6.10 RC1 is the FSO exe.
The newest version of the MVPs -is- the one with MV Complete.
-
Ok so let's make sure I'm seeing the correct file list I need to get:
Turey's Installer
MV_Complete
MV_Music
Readme
Mod.ini
Launcher Graphic
Launcher55D
Now IF I've read and not missed anything, the first installer will actually get most of the files, and the other's are just added into the file structure as well.
or have I missed something here,.....I am getting on in years ya know.
:)
Again thanks for all the help everyone.
-
Yeah, that should cover most of it.
I don't think the installer gets you 3.6.10 RC1 though, so you should get that. If it does, someone say so, then disregard this comment.
-
I'll double check the above "Suggested reading" threads and see if I can locate a link for that file specifically.
-
The link probably isn't in there, but it is right here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61891.0.html). :)
-
Duuuude... welcome back! ;) [/belated response]
-
Don't let Turey's installer download the MediaVPs, people have reported them being corrupted and Turey hasn't been around lately to fix it. I suggest getting them direct from the release thread.
-
Hey Sand,....how's life been man? :)
Wobble, yea that's what I ended up doing, just as the Noob guide says, let Turey's DL everything that delete all contents of the mediavps folder and download the complete + Music into it.
So far so good,....just a quick check, ran FS2 to the first nebula mission last night.....aside from needing a good flight stick desperately things seem to be good ;)
-
Who else from DA is coming back?
-
Welcome Back :D
-
Sadly just me as far as I know.
Though the wife's likely going to get into it as well :) So that's a plus.
-
Hi. Don't remember you, but hey, it's been a while. Welcome back.
-
Hi. Don't remember you, but hey, it's been a while. Welcome back.
Sorry for being blunt, but...
:wtf:
-
I remember you well from the Squadwar days. :) Welcome back.
-
I remember the name, but Christ it's been a long time. Wow - it just struck me... I've been here (FS Community) my entire adult life and then some. That's... I dunno.
-

That's uber cool.
-
Welcome back Warlock  Never met you before on here, but wanted to chime in regardless :D
-
Thanks again for the welcome everyone ;) I see alot in the game's changed as well as working with the files. Looks like i'll have to relearn some old modding tricks from scratch lol.
Worse part thou....it seems decent flight sticks are a thing of the past for a store to carry :| Hate the idea of ordering any game controller online without first being able to put my hands on it and see how it feels.
-
Just thought I'd stop by and say hello.
Was playing WoW and Malygos's deep breath attack reminded me of an Orion carving up something. :D
*EDIT*
After doing some reading I thought I'd update this a little bit before anyone reads it.
I am alive, breathing, still the 30 year old virgin, still the nit with a small twig up his ass. In short, things haven't changed all that much. As can be assumed from the statement above, I have gone down the dark path. I was enjoying EVE, wasn't very good at it, but, it was fun. But then my Boss at the time, of all people, showed me this movie of a guy yelling at bunch of other people about whelps. Then he showed me a video of what the other guy was yelling about. 40 stylized characters killing a rather largish dragon. Then it was inevitable, I fought it. For a long time. Then I did the trial, I even got showed around by a friend from EVE. Now skip forward to going on 4 years later. And I think you could label me a full fledged World of Warcraft fanatic. It's not that I don't go out from time to time. Tho I am currently seeking gainful employment(who isn't). I have Warcraft on my phone, on my desktop wallpaper. I can tell you why a red dragon is your best friend and a black is evil incarnate. I know what "FOR THE HORDE!" means, even though I play Alliance. There I've gone and gotten long winded again. See even that hasn't changed.
Keep your head down and pass the ammo

Well, it's been interesting. Gone for two years is a long time for warlock, good thing that much before that there was the hlp wipe out. Where people who haven't logged into their profiles for a certain number of time of inactivity got deleted. This surprisingly cleared up half of the inactive accounts compared to the active ones.
-
Now I understand what my friend meant when he said
"I'm quitting WoW."
Sounds like a bloody social plague
Anyways
Welcome Back! :D
-
I don't think accounts can be deleted, S-99.
-
Well if accounts got deleted then I'm ubber special....since aside from a very random log in here and there I actually haven't been around since about 2001 :)
And WoW ? Ack. I just can't see paying for the right to play a game I already paid for the first time around :)
Which is why, as a SW fanatic and a D&D player, SW Galaxies and D&D Online got left at the store, the new SW KOTOR will likely stay on a store shelf, ST online and SG Online will likely stay on a shelf if they charge a fee as well :D
Thank god for good old Guild Wars thou :)

Yeah WOW is something I refuse to play. I have a bit of problem with their business model. I believe that once you pay for a game you own hands down no questions asked. This is why I play Guild Wars. I don't play Guild Wars as much as I used to. Once in awhile I will still log in though.
-
About 2 years ago the Administrators deleted over 1,500 old and unused accounts. With those accounts still here, HLP's number of members would exceed 8,000...
Not that I found the mass deletion useless, though.
-

You've stuck to your modding hobby for far too long. You should take up something more productive, like unicycling.
-
LMAO

I think Warlock's departure was before my time, but I definitely remember you from around these parts. Welcome back. :)
-
Hehe....a bit late to greet you on your comeback.
Damn, you have been away for a long time! Methinks I came here a little bit before you left.
-
I think they deleted people with no posts.
-
And WoW ? Ack. I just can't see paying for the right to play a game I already paid for the first time around :)
I look at it this way, it's more entertaining than a lot of that crap on television and cheaper and a hell of a lot more entertaining than going to a movie. I figure I save $100 a month(would be more if I had a GF) because I play wow.
-
Except that you can find good and entertaining games that don't require you to pay that much. I never got Wow. Tried it. But it's so...shallow.
-
Hmmmm
I'd much rather spend my $10-15 per month on seeing a movie every other month with my wife. Or buying a PS3/PC game that'll entertain me for at least 4 months.
Course the PS3 games kinna take priority just behind the Blu-Ray movies.....gotta justify that Sony Bravia somehow :D
Hmmmmm FS2 in 1080P on a 40" widescreen.......... I think I need to buy some new cables suddenly :)
-
Yeah, WoW sounds so addictive. Have a friend who plays it and it's like he's on drugs *I wanna play warcraft, hurry up bus, i wanna get home*. I'm thinking of not playing it, i'm bad enough at doing work without such an addictive game. Hell, I'm supposed to be doing homework even as I write this!! And this is a bloody forum about a game (a very awesome, awesome game and forum ), not some addiction
-
*Pokes head in from out in the dark reaches of the internet.....brushes dust off thread*
Guess what I'm, downloading again? *wink*
So glad to see this place is still up and kicking :)
-
We'll be around for a long time yet, methinks. ;)
Howdy, BTW. :p
-
Yeah, we don't die. We just get older and crankier. :p
-
Definitely crankier.
-
Older is certainly right lol. Hard to believe this game came out before 2K even. Been getting things ready for our first kid... got thinking back on things and decided to dust off the old flight stick and give this classic a replay :)
-

Congrats! First kid's awesome. I got three of the buggers myself, and wouldn't have it any other way. :)
-
um....two things one shouldn't put in the same sentence....thinking about a having a kid, and dusting off the old flight stick. welcome back
-
At least he didn't call it his joy stick.

Thanks we're certainly looking forward to him. Kinna odd,... gets you remembering things your folks had that you just knew we "ancient" and now I'm realizing one day my boy will think that about Ipads & Ipods, all kinds of things lol .
Yea...that's the train of thought that had me drifting on back here for a bit as well LOL
-
um....two things one shouldn't put in the same sentence....thinking about a having a kid, and dusting off the old flight stick.
I feel like that's exactly how things work for a lot of couples who already have at least one kid. :p

Welcome back Warlock, and congrats on your impending child...
...Sleep as much as is humanely possible...

If your job can wing it, being a partial night owl and dealing with the young one(s) until around 2-3am has a number of benefits, including A) ensuring your wife gets a minimally-decent night's sleep (10pm-3am worst case scenario) and B) allowing you to get a decent sleep too (3am-10am works nicely). I've been doing this for years now, and it works great. :)
-
Sadly my work day typically starts at 5am lol. "Good" news is for the last week or two the wife's been helping me prep for lack of sleep (poor thing not meaning too of course).
Really looking forward to showing this world to the little guy. 49 days and counting .... trying to get my gaming fix while I can for a bit!!
-

Although this bit of text would seem to preclude any lascivious connotations. Congrats on the new minion.
