Title: Filefront: Reborn
Post by: Mobius on March 25, 2009, 02:06:41 pm
You may or may not know this already, but Filefront is going out of business. I'm posting this here because I can give for sure that plenties of modders whose files are hosted on Filefront should be warned.

I'm more concerned about the FreeSpace Campaign Restoration Project, which relies on Filefront completely. If you have any good options for the FSCRP, let me know ASAP.

Any recommendations for stuff I should pull down before it goes away?  That's pretty sad really.

People should download as many files as they can to have backups. Although I'm pretty sure most of the valuable files are DLable from FSMods now, several other files risk to get lost.

That really sucks. :(
Is it true that they'll be going out of business March 30th?

Wait. I don't know this. Why? How? When? Gimme some info.

I would say ModDB for an alternative but they use FileFront as one of their mirrors.

Download.com works but there is that waiting period before the files are posted and any time there is an update.

They're going out (according to Wikipedia) March 30th. Here's the link that has their farewells. http://farewell.filefront.com/ (http://farewell.filefront.com/)

What will happen to the File Network sites then? I haven't seen any of that news posted there?

Are you talking about File Planet and Co.?  That's not related.  I don't know of FileFront having many affiliates.

WAIIIIIT... damn, that site had some of the best modding communities.  :(

Mobius, I don't see any reason why FSmods won't work.

I guess I'll be doing some serious downloading from them tomorrow.

We can't post updates on any of the network sites. Ziff Davis has locked down the software we use to post files, pictures, and news on the network sites.

The network sites are going to be shut down.

I just heard about this very recently, the poor folks over at jk3files.com are scrambling to get a site and hosting together, they have a hell of a job though.   Their forums are already down, I think they'll be starting completely from scratch where that's concerned.

Seems to have come out of nowhere, anyone got an actual scoop?

I've done a lot of looking around and all that I can find is that it will

indefinitely suspend site operations on March 30, 2009 due to current economic conditions.
Something that may have to do with it is Ziff Davis Media has announced that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 5, 2008. They lost around $188 million in 05, and have sold most of their "properties" (these include 1up.com, gametab, gamevideo's and mycheats.com) They have also discontinued over 15 magazines and websites. Here's the link for the Ziff Davis info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziff_Davis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziff_Davis) I couldn't see anything on their website that sheds any light on what's going on.

IMO, they ran out of money and are now trying to sell everything they have to save their necks. Sorry if this doesn't answer your questions, but this is all I could find.

Time to give the DSL line a workout I guess.  Couldn't hurt to grab a backup of anything Freespace related.

EDIT: Doesn't look like there's much on there unless I'm looking in the wrong spot.

Just a reminder that lots of main Freespace stuff is on FreeSpace mods (almost everyone knows though. :blah:) All I could find on Filefront was the demo's for FS1, FS2, Descent etc. I always used FSmods instead. :)

Damn, and here I relied on FileFront for some hard-to-find files not including FS stuff.

True...but as I stated above, many other files that risk to get lost are on Filefront now. FSMods is pretty recent so it's not a "full" database yet.

EDIT: I read that the whole "Filefront will go down" is a joke by Filefront's admins. Is that true? That'd be incredibly pathetic.

Source?

That would be a mean trick, making people panic and all...
Though it's all in time for April Fool's Day, which makes it plausible.
Damn I HATE April Fools...

Doesn't matter.  If this is real, we need to act accordingly, and if it's not, then we shouldn't depend on them for anything anymore.  Anybody who can make a joke like that with no problems doesn't deserve our patronage.

Only thing is, it probably is serious.  Remember, March has 31 days, not 30.  They're two days short.  They're not joking.

D/load just in case if you can afford GB downloads. Use divShare and create a group. Call yourself eg. FS1_modName_00, then cahnge the number at the end to create another account, as you only get 5GB. Let everyone see and download what is in "your" account. Have all these accounts in the group.

Just a suggestion...

Maybe March 31st would have been too obvious. It'd be a disturbing AF and I swear I won't use Filefront anymore as protest.

I checked and filefront still seems to be up. However, if it was a prank by Ziff Davis, then I don't think many people are laughing (I'm not that's for sure  :beamz:)

Here's a link to something that might explain a bit about it. http://arloria.net/ircrts/wiki/Main_Page (http://arloria.net/ircrts/wiki/Main_Page)

EDIT: Stupid me. :hopping: Should have known not to put up links up on April Fools day...

This should be a wise time to start collecting all FS related stuff in case something does happen?

FileFront has been acquired by the original founders of the site and will NOT be suspended as previously announced. This is NOT an April Fool's Joke.

After learning about Ziff Davis Media's plan to shut down FileFront at the end of March, the original founders of FileFront made the decision to buy it back from Ziff Davis Media.

We're happy to announce to the gaming community that as of today, April 1st, 2009, FileFront is a completely independent company again and is no longer part of Ziff Davis Media. All previously suspended services should be active and working again. We thank Ziff Davis Media for their cooperation and willingness to keep the site and community alive.

Due to the very unfortunate timing of this event and related announcements on March 24th and April 1st (April Fool's Day), we'd like to make it perfectly clear that:

1) The March 24th announcement about FileFront shutting down was NOT an early April Fool's joke and Ziff Davis Media had every intention of shutting down FileFront by the end of March.

2) This announcement about the original founders buying back FileFront from Ziff Davis Media is also NOT an April Fool's joke.

3) We're making this announcement on April 1st because the deal was completed today and we want to bring all services back online immediately.

4) We would NEVER shut down FileFront as an April Fool's joke.

5) We are happy to be back!

FileFront has existed in one form or another (originally as FileLeech and Voodoo Extreme's downloads) since 1997. In the last 12 years, FileFront has become the gaming community's most comprehensive and trafficked library hosting millions of files for thousands of games while requiring no registration and providing uncapped download speeds. We look forward to improving FileFront and serving the gaming community for years to come.

Welcome home. Game On!

It could be a publicity stunt created by the old and new owners to look like an April Fool's joke, but really just designed to generate publicity for ZD and FileFront.

An unintentional joke that's probably gone bad anyway, I fear.

Well, either way, I'm never hosting anything on Filefront anymore, and from now on, downloads from Filefront don't work for me even if they actually do.

I would say use it for your trash files, and send your most important stuff on a more reliable host?

No doubt this event has hurt FF's reputation...

Ziff Davis Media group has no mention of filefront shutting down or even being sold. It still lists it as part of their company.

It could be argued that if they are going down the drain so badly that they need to shut down stuff like Filefront or other parts of their business, they might be busy enough not to keep all the information quite up-to-date on their website.

Honestly, "We're making this announcement on April 1st because the deal was completed today and we want to bring all services back online immediately." is a **** excuse, or a terrible PR move.

Wait a few days, and they wouldn't rape their own reputation with a branding iron.

I don't buy it. Smells like an April Fool's joke turned bad, and PR trying to save its ass by drilling it a new hole.

I believe it is possible.  However I would buy it more if there was news beforehand that deal might be made.  That there was a chance the site MIGHT not be shutdown.  I wouldn't be surprised if they are getting hate emails containing stories about people who stayed to the eleventh hour download ever last file they could.
